Public Interest Registry

The Public Interest Registry is a Reston, Virginia-based not-for-profit created by the Internet Society (ISOC) in 2002 to manage the .ORG top-level domain. It took over operation of .ORG in January 2003 and launched the .NGO and .ONG domain names in March 2015. The organization is involved in internet policy, education and security issues, like the Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) protocol, domain tasting, DNS filtering and internet adoption in third world countries.

History

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) circulated a request for proposals in May 2002 for a new organization to manage the .ORG domain. The Internet Society (ISOC) put forth one of eleven proposals ICANN received. ISOC won an endorsement within ICANN and was recommended to the selection committee in a preliminary report. At a public ICANN meeting in Bucharest in 2002, ISOC CEO Lynn St. Amour and Afilias CTO Ram Mohan presented ISOC's proposal to manage the .ORG registry. The proposal included the creation of a separate entity, called the Public Interest Registry, to oversee the .ORG domain. Its board of directors is appointed by ISOC. Afilias was selected as the back-end technical provider for .ORG under contract with the Public Interest Registry. The largest domain transfer in history occurred on January 1, 2003, when ICANN had VeriSign delegate 2.6 million domains to the Public Interest Registry. An Internet Society Vice President, David Maher, became the chairman. The following month, Ed Viltz became the organization’s first CEO.

Ong (surname)

Ong is a Hokkien romanization of several Chinese surnames: 王 (Wáng in Hanyu Pinyin), 汪 (also Wāng), 黃 (traditional) or 黄 (simplified; Huáng); and 翁 (Weng). Ong or Onge is also a surname of English origin, with earliest known records found in Western Suffolk taxation records from ca. 1280 AD.

Romanization

Under the POJ romanization system, 王 but not the other names includes a circumflex over its vowel: Ông. However, this is often omitted in practice.

Distribution

In Singapore, Ong is the fifth-most-common surname among Chinese residents. In the United States, Ong was the 6,682nd most common surname during the 1990 US census and the 4,343rd most common surname during the year 2000 US census.

Bak file

In computing, ".bak" is a filename extension commonly used to signify a backup copy of a file.

When a program is about to overwrite an existing file (for example, when the user saves the document he or she is working on), the program may first make a copy of the existing file, with .bak appended to the filename. This common .bak naming scheme makes it possible to retrieve the original contents of the file. In a similar manner, a user may also manually make a copy of the file before the change and append .bak to the filename.

Other naming schemes are also in widespread use: file~, file.orig, file.old, and so on.

Database Applications like FoxPro and SQL Server use .bak files to back up their databases and other applications, like XML shell, create .bak files in their Autosave process. They don't get automatically deleted, so they need to be manually deleted after the process using it is stopped.

Park (Korean surname)

Park(박) is a notable Korean surname, traditionally founded by King Hyeokgeose Park (박혁거세) and theoretically inclusive of all his descendants. In Chinese characters (Hanja), it is written as 朴, which is the simplified version of 樸(pu). The name "Park" is usually assumed to come from the Korean noun 박 bak, which means "bottle gourd," or the Korean adjective stem 밝 balk-, which means "bright." In Chinese, it is read as follows: piáo, pǔ, pò, pō. In Korean(박), it is read as 'bak'.

Founding legend

According to Samguk Sagi, a white horse led a village chief to the location of a big egg, and King Hyeokgeose was said to have been hatched from it amid rays of light. the ray of light, or radiance, in pure Korean, "박" is pronounced "Park" or "Bhak". The Chinese character "朴" (pronounced piao in Mandarin and boku in Japanese) was chosen in antiquity to represent the sound. And since 樸 is the traditional character for 朴, they are used together.
