Polly Bergen (born Nellie Paulina Burgin; July 14, 1930 – September 20, 2014) was an American actress, singer, television host, writer, and entrepreneur.
She won an Emmy Award in 1958 for her performance as Helen Morgan in The Helen Morgan Story. For her stage work she was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance as Carlotta Campion in Follies in 2001. Her film work included 1962's Cape Fear and 1963's The Caretakers, for which she was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. She hosted her own variety show for one season (The Polly Bergen Show), and as an author wrote three books on beauty, fashion, and charm.
Bergen was born in Knoxville, Tennessee to Lucy (née Lawhorn) and William Hugh Burgin, a construction engineer. "Bill Bergen", as he was later known, had singing talent and appeared with his daughter in several episodes of her 18-episode NBC comedy/variety show, The Polly Bergen Show, which aired during the 1957-1958 television season.
Bergen (Norwegian pronunciation: [ˈbærɡən] ( listen)) is a city and municipality in Hordaland on the west coast of Norway. As of the end of Q3 2015, the municipality had a population of 277,378, and the urban population was 250,420 as of 1 January 2015, making Bergen the second-largest city in Norway. The municipality covers an area of 465 square kilometres (180 sq mi) and is located on the peninsula of Bergenshalvøyen. The city centre and northern neighbourhoods are located on Byfjorden, "the city fjord", and the city is surrounded by mountains; Bergen is known as the city of seven mountains. Many of the extra-municipal suburbs are located on islands. Bergen is the administrative centre of Hordaland and consists of eight boroughs—Arna, Bergenhus, Fana, Fyllingsdalen, Laksevåg, Ytrebygda, Årstad and Åsane.
Trading in Bergen may have started as early as the 1020s. According to tradition the city was founded in 1070 by king Olav Kyrre; its name was Bjørgvin, "the green meadow among the mountains". It served as Norway's capital in the 13th century, and from the end of the 13th century became a bureau city of the Hanseatic League. Until 1789, Bergen enjoyed exclusive rights to mediate trade between Northern Norway and abroad and it was the largest city in Norway until surpassed by the capital city, Oslo, in the 1830s. The remains of the quays, Bryggen, is a World Heritage Site. The city was hit by numerous fires. The "Bergen School of Meteorology" was developed at the Geophysical Institute beginning in 1917, the Norwegian School of Economics was founded in 1936, and the University of Bergen in 1946. From 1831 to 1972, Bergen was its own county. In 1972 the municipality absorbed four surrounding municipalities, and at the same time became a part of Hordaland county.
Polly is a nickname for Mary, and is derived from another nickname for Mary, Molly. It is sometimes used as a name in its own right.
"Come prima" (English: As Before) is an Italian song, with lyrics by Mario Panzeri and music by Vincenzo Di Paola and Sandro Taccani.
The most popular version in Italy was by Tony Dallara (Antonio Lardera). A recording by the Marino Marini Quartet made the United Kingdom charts in 1958. The song was also recorded by Domenico Modugno. All these recordings were made in 1958.
The melody was used for a French language song entitled "Tu me donnes", a hit for Dalida in 1959. It was also used for an English language song, "More Than Ever" (lyrics by Mary Bond), recorded in the United Kingdom by Malcolm Vaughan with the Michael Sammes Singers (HMV catalogue number POP 538) (14 weeks on the UK chart, peaking at #5), Robert Earl (4 weeks on the UK chart, peaking at #26), Eve Boswell, and others. Another English language lyric by Buck Ram, under the title "For the First Time" (closer to the original Italian title), was recorded in the United States by Polly Bergen in 1958 (Columbia Records catalog number 41275). This version was also performed by Mario Lanza in his last film, For the First Time (1959). Other performers were Dean Martin, the Platters, Tony Reno & the Sherwoods (the latter in 1965), and Golpes Bajos in 1985. Also it was recorded by Muslim Magomayev in 1961. Cliff Richard also sang in Italian on the "When In Rome" LP.
Helen Morgan (August 2, 1900 – October 9, 1941) was an American singer and actress who worked in films and on the stage. A quintessential torch singer, she made a big splash in the Chicago club scene in the 1920s. She starred as Julie LaVerne in the original Broadway production of Hammerstein and Kern's musical Show Boat in 1927 as well as in the 1932 Broadway revival of the musical, and appeared in two film adaptations, a part-talkie made in 1929 (prologue only) and a full-sound version made in 1936, becoming firmly associated with the role. She suffered from bouts of alcoholism, and despite her notable success in the title role of another Hammerstein and Kern's Broadway musical, Sweet Adeline (1929), her stage career was relatively short. Helen Morgan died of cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 41. She was portrayed by Polly Bergen in the Playhouse 90 drama The Helen Morgan Story and by Ann Blyth in the 1957 biopic based on the television drama.
She was born Helen Riggins in 1900 in Danville, Illinois. Her father Frank Riggins, was a farmer in Davis Township, Fountain County, Indiana. After her mother, Lulu Lang Riggins, divorced and remarried, she changed the last name to "Morgan". Her mother's second marriage ended in divorce, and she moved to Chicago with her daughter. Helen never finished school beyond the eighth grade, and worked a variety of jobs just to get by. She worked as an extra in films. By the age of twenty, Morgan had taken voice lessons and started singing in speakeasies in Chicago. Her voice was not fashionable during the 1920s for the kind of songs that she specialized in, but nevertheless she became a wildly popular torch singer. A draped-over-the-piano look became her signature while performing at Billy Rose's Backstage Club in 1925. In spite of the National Prohibition Act of 1919 outlawing alcohol in the United States, Morgan became a heavy drinker and was often reportedly drunk during these performances.

Polly Bergen and Jack Paar spoof mistakes made by radio and television announcers, in this excerpt from a 1958 episode of NBC's "The Polly Bergen Show".
"Come Prima" ("For The First Time") is the big hit song that came from the final film of Mario Lanza (also entitled "For The First Time"). This beautiful song, which has lyrics in both Italian and English - was recorded by many vocalists and orchestras (besides Mario Lanza on the film soundtrack). Tony Dallara had a big hit in Italy (which I believe was also released by Mercury in the U.S.), the Marino Marini Quartet, and the famous Domenico Modugno ("Volare") also released their own versions at the time. In this century, the young, talented singer Patrizio Buanne has recorded "Come Prima". The English language lyric was written by Buck Ram (manager of The Platters) and the version I remember the best is this one by the beautiful singer and actress, the late Polly Bergen. Polly recor...
