Building

A building or edifice is a structure with a roof and walls standing more or less permanently in one place, such as a house or factory. Buildings come in a variety of shapes, sizes and functions, and have been adapted throughout history for a wide number of factors, from building materials available, to weather conditions, to land prices, ground conditions, specific uses and aesthetic reasons. Buildings serve several needs of society – primarily as shelter from weather, security, living space, privacy, to store belongings, and to comfortably live and work. A building as a shelter represents a physical division of the human habitat (a place of comfort and safety) and the outside (a place that at times may be harsh and harmful).

Ever since the first cave paintings, buildings have also become objects or canvasess of artistic expression. In recent years, interest in sustainable planning and building practices has also become an intentional part of the design process of many new buildings.

Steve Blank

Steve Blank (born 1953) is a Silicon Valley serial-entrepreneur and academician who is based in Pescadero, California.

Blank is recognized for developing the Customer Development methodology, which launched the Lean Startup movement. Blank is also the co-founder of E.piphany.

Blank has spent over thirty years within the high technology industry. He has founded or worked within eight startup companies, four of which have gone public.

Blank's Google Tech talk, The Secret History of Silicon Valley, offers a widely regarded insider's perspective on the emerging Silicon Valley's start-up innovation. Blank has published three books: The Four Steps to the Epiphany, Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost and The Startup Owner's Manual.

Blank teaches and writes about Customer Development and is a consulting associate professor of entrepreneurship at Stanford. He currently lectures at the Haas School of Business, University of California Berkeley, Columbia University and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Together with the Entrepreneurship Center at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), he created a version of Lean Launchpad for Life Sciences and Healthcare which he taught there in the fall 2013.

DL Skateboards is a unique young company that makes custom, handmade skate decks on the sidewalk outside a Greenpoint apartment building and in a retrofitted box truck acquired in New Hampshire. The couple behind the brand, Lauren Andino and Derek Mabra, have been skateboarding most of their lives and their passion and love for the sport drive their small business forward, producing fantastic cruisers modeled after 60's classics. Thornico Building - From grey to green
FROM GREY TO GREEN Kollision [www.kollision.dk], together with Martin Professional [www.martin.com], and in dialog with Christian Stadil [www.christianstadil.com] the owner of Thornico Group [www.thornico.com], and Thornico real estate director Ronald L.M. Bouwens, developed and implemented a complete exterior lighting design for the office building and parking house Thornico Building [www.thornicobuilding.com/EN] in the centre of Rotterdam. The building is a large complex of office spaces, shops, dining and cultural facilities, two inner atriums and close to 800 parking spaces. In this building the 'Company Karma philosophy' developed by Christian Stadil has been embodied as a series of green initiatives, for example covering large parts of the parking facilities with plants and integrating LED light as a communicative strategy. This unique interplay between communication, building and visitor is a powerful form of branding, which Kollision has coined Enhanced Brand Ambience, a communicative strategy that innovative companies can use to great effect. LIGHT DESIGNS The lighting designs range from pragmatic functional light at the car entrance and in the atriums, light sources emphasizing the green values on flag poles, at the main entrance area and at the reception, to the most significant part – 170 meters of vertical LED tubes distributed onto the 4.000 m2 facade. The tubes draw lines that underlines the monumentality of the architecture by emphasizing where the building starts and stops, the corner at Hartmansstreet and Westblaak, and furthermore indicate the main entrances - all supported by the dynamic content and lighting design. Slow movements of green nuances travels up the tubes replaced by rhythms of sinus-like curves of green, which travels across the facade's 200 meters, to more ambient and sparkling expressions, which gives the concrete building an almost ethereal look. The new lighting design makes the building look lighter and makes it stand out in the urban space. CREDITS Kollision developed the main lighting design and layout for the project, as well as the dynamic content and player system, controllable via a web interface. Martin Professional handled all lighting hardware supply and technical planning, as well as all commercial aspects of the project. Installation was completed by local supplier WL Techniek [www.wltechniek.nl].
