Vision Australia is a not-for-profit organisation and Australia's largest provider of services for people with blindness and low vision.
Vision Australia was created in 2004 through the merger of 4 smaller blindness organisations: the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind (RVIB), Vision Australia Foundation (VAF), The Royal Blind Society (RBS), The National Information Library Service (NILS).
At the time Bills needed to be passed through the parliaments of Victoria and New South Wales for this to occur.
In 2006 the organisation was further expanded with the merger of the Royal Blind Foundation Queensland. This merger gave it complete reach across the eastern states of Australia.
In February 2008 it was announced that the Seeing Eye Dogs Australia (SEDA) would also merge with Vision Australia by the end of June 2008.
The inclusion of guide dog services means that one national organisation is able to provide all the services required by the blindness and low vision community.
World Vision International is an Evangelical Christian humanitarian aid, development, and advocacy organization. It was founded in 1950 by Robert Pierce as a service organization to meet the emergency needs of missionaries. In 1975 development work was added to World Visions objectives. It is active in more than 90 countries with a total revenue including grants, product and foreign donations of $2.79 billion (2011).
Started in 1950 as World Vision Inc, the charity originally operated only in the United States but expanded to other countries in 1966. World Vision International was founded in 1977 by Walter Stanley Mooneyham the then president of World Vision. Today it is headquartered in Monrovia, California, in the same building as World Vision Inc. Mooneyham served as president of World Vision International until 1982 when he resigned after criticism within the International Board related to management style.
In 1967, the Mission Advanced Research and Communication Center (MARC) was founded by Ed Dayton as a Division of World Vision International. It became the organizational backbone of the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization, collected and published data about "unreached people" and also published the "Mission Handbook: North American Protestant Ministries Overseas".
World Vision Australia is an ecumenical Christiannon-governmental organisation based in Melbourne, Australia. It is a part of the World Vision Partnership led by World Vision International.
World Vision Australia was founded in 1966 after a proposal to start a new office in Australia by Bernard Barron, the head of World Vision Canada, and after startup funds were provided by the headquarters of World Vision in the United States. Greame Irvine, an evangelical Christian, was at the head of the Australian branch of World Vision. The first project of World Vision Australia was related to Vietnam.
The head of World Vision Australia, Greame Irvine, was 1978 also among the signers of the Declaration of Internationalization, which declared a set of objectives for World Vision and also defined a Statement of Faith that corresponds to the Statement of Faith put forward by the American National Association of Evangelicals as standard for their evangelical convictions as the theological frame in which World Vision International and its national offices like World Vision Australia have to operate. Greame Irvine became 1988 the first non-American president of World Vision International.

Australia (/ɒˈstreɪliə/, /ə-/, colloquially /-jə/), officially known as the Commonwealth of Australia, is an Oceanian country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands. It is the world's sixth-largest country by total area. Neighbouring countries include Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and East Timor to the north; the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu to the north-east; and New Zealand to the south-east.
For about 50,000 years before the first British settlement in the late 18th century, Australia was inhabited by indigenous Australians, who spoke languages grouped into roughly 250 language groups. After the European discovery of the continent by Dutch explorers in 1606, Australia's eastern half was claimed by Great Britain in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales from 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in subsequent decades; the continent was explored and an additional five self-governing crown colonies were established. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies federated, forming the Commonwealth of Australia. Since federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system that functions as a federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy comprising six states and several territories. The population of 24 million is highly urbanised and heavily concentrated in the eastern states and on the coast.

Vision Australia has listened to our clients and they have told us what they want. They’ve told us that they want access to lifelong learning; they want meaningful careers; and they want to contribute and feel included in every aspect of society. We want to make this happen. So, over the next 2 years, we’ll take a new approach to develop programs, services and systems in line with our four priorities of Education, Employment, Independence and Social Inclusion. We can’t do this alone. We’ll be working with clients, their families and friends, in designing the programs, activities, products and new services that they want. Together, we will remove barriers so people who are blind or have low vision will achieve their goals and live the life they choose.
In this short video we join Lucy in a typical day in her life.

11 years ago, World Vision Goodwill Ambassador Melissa Doyle sponsored Khulan in Mongolia. “Every child deserves an education and healthcare and I knew my small contribution would make a difference,” Mel said. Today, Khulan is 18 years old and studying to become a railway engineer. Child sponsorship provided her with educational support and improved school facilities. Her community also benefited from improved health services, clean water, and better incomes. This year Khulan’s community was ready to move forward on its own. It’s fair to say that Mel, and other Aussie child sponsors, have definitely made a difference. Hello from Xonnabouly, Laos! Get to know the Xonnabouly community and learn how your support through community sponsorship is helping to increase access to education and clean water, and supporting families to improve their livelihoods. The Xonnabouly community is made up of 10 villages located in an area of forested hills which is susceptible to both droughts and flooding. Farmers often cannot grow enough food to support their families. There is a lack of clean water, limited access to basic health services, and little knowledge of basic hygiene and sanitation practices. Diseases are common, particularly among children. Hello from Nabukalu, Uganda! Get to know the Nabukalu community and learn how your support through community sponsorship is helping support children to achieve basic literacy and numeracy skills through quality education and improving the overall health of children and families. Nabukalu is a rural area in eastern Uganda, towards the Kenyan border. The climate is tropical with most families engaging in rice and maize farming. Many children in Nabukalu, especially girls, drop out of school before grade six to help at home and in the fields, or due to early marriage. Many children, parents and teachers are unaware of children’s rights to education. Lack of access to clean water and hygienic toilets leaves children vulnerable to diseases like diarrhoea. There are only three health faciliti...
Hello from Luc Yen, Vietnam! Get to know the Luc Yen community and learn how your support through community sponsorship is helping to increase access to education, improve health and nutrition, and help families build better livelihoods. In the Luc Yen district of mountainous northern Vietnam, a shortage of productive land and poor farming practices make it hard for rural families to grow enough food to earn reliable incomes. Many local water sources are polluted and unsafe for drinking which has resulted in more than a third of children under five suffering from malnutrition. Many schools in Luc Yen also lack resources and well-trained teachers. World Vision is working alongside the community and the local government to develop the infrastructure, skills and knowledge the people of Luc...
Hello from Chisapani, Nepal! Chisapani is a remote rural area in western Nepal that is prone to seasonal flooding, and home to approximately 113,000 people. One in three families live below the poverty line and many adults seek work in nearby countries as they struggle to meet their families’ needs through farming alone. World Vision is working alongside the community and the local government to devel...
Hello from Chihota, Zimbabwe! Get to know the Chihota community and learn how your support through community sponsorship is helping to improve livelihoods and ensure that children and families have access to education and healthcare. Chihota is a rural community in Mashonaland East Province, about 1.5 hours from Harare with a population of approximately 22,000. Poor soil, deforestation and lack of seed fertilisers mean that many farmers can’t grow enough food to meet their families’ needs. Child malnutrition and ill health are common, and HIV prevalence is high. Health centres lack qualified staff and necessary supplies. Not all households have functional toilets, and some areas lack access to clean water. School enrolment is below 80 percent and pass rates are as low as 24 percent. Wo...
Hello from Basedth, Cambodia! Get to know the Basedth community and learn how your support through community sponsorship is helping them gain access to clean water, quality education and improving the overall health of children and families. The Basedth community is located in southern Cambodia’s Kampong Speu province, about two-and-a-half hours’ drive from the capital Phnom Penh. Food shortages, lack of health and nutrition knowledge, unsafe water, lack of toilets and poor hygiene all contribute to ill health and malnutrition amongst mothers and children. Education quality is also low with only two pre-schools in the community and many children dropping out of school before reaching year nine to earn income for their families. World Vision is working alongside the community and the local...

I maintain, I have the best Education Vision for Australia, of any political candidate in Australia. Including Primary, Secondary, Trades Training, and Tertiary Education. Gonski proposals are nothing more than federal/state funding ratios for education, and won't fix a single problem in education.. History proves, 95% of political funding for education does not get to the classroom. Most of the problems in education centre on the authority structures in schools, the curriculum, and politicians have destroyed teachers' rights, authority, and status (through legislation & principals sacking), and subjected teachers to violence and abuse. Furthermore, no budgets for teachers, and not enough morals and values education. Liberal has no legitimate vision for education; they'll make the rich r...

From child soldiers in Sudan to gang violence in Papua New Guinea; tsunamis in the Pacific to earthquakes in New Zealand, we’re confronted with communities in need every day. Who should we help? How can we be sure our aid dollars reach their destination? Some believe that aid traps communities in a cycle of dependence, holding them back from developing their own systems and managing their own issues. So on balance, do those dollars hurt more than they help? And with endemic poverty in Australia’s indigenous communities and natural disaster breaking Queensland’s budget – should we ‘take care of our own’ first? Arguing that the aid dollar is a waste of money is Greg Sheridan, the Australian’s foreign editor; James Goodman, Associate Professor at UTS’ Social and Political Change group and T...
