Springfield’s M1A Scout Squad Rifle comes from the factory with a forward mounted Picatinny rail. Though many believe this is the only qualification for a Scout Rifle, the truth is there are quite a few other considerations. Regardless of the purist’s definition of a Scout Rifle, the M1A Scout Squad Rifle is a damn fine general-purpose rifle, and that’s exactly the motivation behind the Scout Rifle concept. Some however are unfamiliar with exactly what a scout scope is, and because of that they are unsure which scout scope would be a best fit for this rifle.
A true scout scope has about 10 inches of eye relief. This allows the scope to be mounted far enough forward to clear the action. Discounting scopes for handguns, there are only five currently manufactured riflescopes that have this much eye relief. Now, while you might get by with a shorter eye relief on a bolt-action Scout Rifle equipped with a full-length rail, for the M1A Scout Squad Rifle, you need that full 10 inches. So, let’s look at the options.

In 1984 Jeff Cooper introduced the world to the Scout Rifle. At the same time Winchester introduced a new Model 94 chambered for the 307 Winchester. Jeff Cooper was a fan of the Model 94 and wrote about it often. Interestingly, it seems he never explored the Model 94 in 307 Winchester with regard to Scout Rifle potential.
Though this rifle does not exactly meet Cooper’s elemental definition of a Scout Rifle, it does meet what Cooper considered a Scout Rifle’s most important characteristics, and that is friendliness and handiness. This rifle was specifically set up to deal with Scout Rifle-like problems. Not only does it do a great job at that, it might just be the best traditional, lever-action rifle for general-purpose use and for big game hunting.

Though many believe this is the only qualification for a Scout Rifle, the truth is there are quite a few other considerations. Regardless of the purist’s definition of a Scout Rifle, the M1A Scout Squad Rifle is a damn fine general-purpose rifle, and that’s exactly the motivation behind the Scout Rifle concept. Some however are unfamiliar with exactly what a scout scope is, and because of that they are unsure which scout scope would be a best fit for this rifle.
A true scout scope has about 10 inches of eye relief. This allows the scope to be mounted far enough forward to clear the action. Discounting scopes for handguns, there are only five currently manufactured riflescopes that have this much eye relief. In 1984 Jeff Cooper introduced the world to the Scout Rifle. At the same time Winchester introduced a new Model 94 chambered for the 307 Winchester. Jeff Cooper was a fan of the Model 94 and wrote about it often. Interestingly, it seems he never explored the Model 94 in 307 Winchester with regard to Scout Rifle potential.
Though this rifle does not exactly meet Cooper’s elemental definition of a Scout Rifle, it does meet what Cooper considered a Scout Rifle’s most important characteristics, and that is friendliness and handiness. This rifle was specifically set up to deal with Scout Rifle-like problems. Not only does it do a great job at that, it might just be the best traditional, lever-action rifle for general-purpose use and for big game hunting.

Richard Mann is an ex-Special Forces operator and a high performance and mindset coach.
He has been living and breathing, researching and developing personal development & the psychology of high performance for over 20 years. It was this passion for high performance that drove him to join the Royal Marines and then on to pass selection and operate in the Special Forces (Special Boat Service – SBS).
Post SBS service Richard worked in the private security sector. This work included: in-country design of security protocols for UK Government officials and media personnel working in hostile environments; discreet close protection of senior executives and risk mitigation advice to multinational companies.
Richard has now forged a career following his passion of studying elite-level performance. He works with individuals, teams and organisations developing their leadership, resilience, and performance capability.
His work is underpinned by the attributes of Special Forces team ethos and values and the belief that these attributes are equally applicable to the business environment. This includes the principles required for high-performance teams to operate effectively in high-pressure environments.

In 1984 Jeff Cooper introduced the world to the Scout Rifle. At the same time Winchester introduced a new Model 94 chambered for the 307 Winchester. Jeff Cooper was a fan of the Model 94 and wrote about it often. Interestingly, it seems he never explored the Model 94 in 307 Winchester with regard to Scout Rifle potential.
Though this rifle does not exactly meet Cooper’s elemental definition of a Scout Rifle, it does meet what Cooper considered a Scout Rifle’s most important characteristics, and that is friendliness and handiness. This rifle was specifically set up to deal with Scout Rifle-like problems. Not only does it do a great job at that, it might just be the best traditional, lever-action rifle for general-purpose use and for big game hunting.
