Film festival

A film festival is an organized, extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Increasingly, film festivals show some films outdoors. Films may be of recent date and, depending upon the festival's focus, can include international and domestic releases. Some festivals focus on a specific film-maker or genre (e.g., film noir) or subject matter (e.g., horror film festivals). A number of film festivals specialise in short films of a defined maximum length. Film festivals are typically annual events. Some film historians do not consider Film Festivals as official releases of film, like Jerry Beck. The best known film festivals are the Venice Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the Toronto Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and the Berlin International Film Festival, the latter being the largest film festival worldwide, based on attendance. The Venice Film Festival is the oldest major festival. The Melbourne International Film Festival is the largest film festival in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the oldest in the world. A 2013 study found 3,000 active films festivals worldwide—active defined as having held an event in the previous 24 months.

Alexandra

Alexandra (Greek: Ἀλεξάνδρα) is the feminine form of the given name Alexander, which is a romanization of the Greek name Ἀλέξανδρος (Alexandros). Etymologically, the name is a compound of the Greek verb ἀλέξειν (alexein) "to defend" and ἀνήρ (anēr) "man" (GEN ἀνδρός andros). Thus it may be roughly translated as "defender of man" or "protector of man". The name was one of the titles or epithets given to the Greek goddess Hera and as such is usually taken to mean "one who comes to save warriors". The earliest attested form of the name is the Mycenaean Greek 𐀀𐀩𐀏𐀭𐀅𐀨, a-re-ka-sa-da-ra, written in the Linear B syllabic script.

Marc Eugene Lottering (born 4 December 1967) is a stand-up comedian from Cape Town, South Africa, and grew up in the Retreat townships of the Cape Flats.

His first show was titled "AFTER THE BEEP" in 1997.

In 2001 he won the Vita Award for Best Actor in a Comedy, and he has also multiple Fleur du Cap Awards.

In 2010 he was part of the Bafunny Bafunny show at the Royal Albert Hall.

In 2010 he married his partner of ten years, Anwar McKay.

Deep Fried Man

Daniel Friedman (born 9 January 1981), known on stage as Deep Fried Man, is a South African musical comedian and writer based in Johannesburg. He describes what he does as "stand-up comedy with a guitar". He adopted his stage name, a play on his real name, because "it went along with the kind of musical comedy I wanted to do, which was an unhealthy kind of comedy".

Early life

Friedman is the son of political analyst and newspaper columnist Steven Friedman, and is Jewish.

From 1999 to 2002, he studied Journalism, Philosophy and Drama at Rhodes University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at Wits University in 2010.

Career

After university, Friedman worked in journalism and social media.

He performed alternative folk music in Johannesurg prior to becoming a comedian. He made the transition to professional comedy after being declared joint winner of the 2010 Comedy Showdown hosted by Joe Parker, as a result of which he got to perform in the 2010 UN Comedy Show alongside top local and international comedians. He was voted Best Newcomer at the first Annual South African Comic's Choice Awards held at the Teatro, Montecasino, in January 2011.
