The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (Arabic: مجلس التعاون لدول الخليج العربية), originally (and still colloquially) known as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC, مجلس التعاون الخليجي), is a regional intergovernmental political and economic union consisting of all Arab states of the Persian Gulf, except for Iraq. Its member states are Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
All current member states are monarchies, including three constitutional monarchies (Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain), two absolute monarchies (Saudi Arabia and Oman), and one federal monarchy (the United Arab Emirates, composed of seven member states, each with their own emir). There have been discussions regarding the future membership of Jordan, Morocco, and Yemen.
A 2011 proposal to transform the GCC into a "Gulf Union" with tighter economic, political and military coordination has been advanced by Saudi Arabia, a move meant to counterbalance Shi'ite Muslim influence in the region from Iran and other Arab Spring countries. Objections have been raised against the proposal by other countries. In 2014, Bahrain prime minister Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa said that current events in the region highlighted the importance of the proposal.
Cooperation Council may refer to:
A council is a group of people who come together to consult, deliberate, or make decisions. A council may function as a legislature, especially at a town, city or county level, but most legislative bodies at the state or national level are not considered councils. At such levels, there may be no separate executive branch, and the council may effectively represent the entire government. A board of directors might also be denoted as a council. A committee might also be denoted as a council, though a committee is generally a subordinate body composed of members of a larger body, while a council may not be. Because many schools have a student council, the council is the form of governance with which many people are likely to have their first experience as electors or participants.
A member of a council may be referred to as a councillor, or by the gender-specific titles of councilman and councilwoman.
Notable examples of types of councils encountered in politics include:
The President is a mountain peak on the The President/Vice-President Massif, just North of Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park, near the Alpine Club of Canada's Stanley Mitchell hut.
The President was named Shaugnessy in 1904 by Edward Whymper after Thomas Shaugnessy, the president of the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1907, the mountain was renamed by the Alpine Club of Canada, after it was discovered that the name had already been used on a mountain in the Selkirks.

The Gulf has been thrown into crisis after several countries officially cut ties with Qatar. Three members of the GCC have expelled Qatar's diplomats and have given its nationals 2 weeks to leave. All have accused their Gulf neighbour of supporting terorrism in the region. Qatar, now isolated in a hostile environment, remains defiant calling the allegations unjustified and baseless. So, is the GCC heading towards further fragmentation? In who's favour might this split be? Tensions are mounting among members of the Gulf Cooperation Council and, at the same time, Saudi Arabia has found itself at the center of a controversy over its recent succession restructuring. While the Trump administration is keen to restore Saudi Arabia to its traditional key position in Middle East policy, the Kingdom is facing a host of serious issues, domestic and foreign. Is Saudi Arabia headed for stability or turmoil? When King Salman named his son, Mohammed Bin Salman, crown prince in June, Riyadh seemed to be ensuring a degree of political stability not seen in the kingdom perhaps since its founding. However, a recent flood of news stories suggests that the transition was not as smooth as initially portrayed, with the younger Mohammed Bin Salman forcing out his 57-year-old cou...
It was at a military ceremony in Doha when Qatar's Emir Tamin bin Hamad Al Thani took to the stage to make a routine speech. But then came the local media reports, saying he praised Iran and criticised the Gulf Cooperation Council - or GCC - for allegedly supporting terror. Saudi Arabia was singled out the most. Qatar's government, for its part, says its media outlets were hacked and that the Emir never made the remarks. But the damage was already done, and the nations responded by shutting down all of Qatar's media outlets in their territories. So what really happened and how will it affect cooperation between the Gulf states? Leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries will meet in the Qatari capital on Tuesday for a summit being held after months of tension between its members. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain withdrew their ambassadors from Doha last year, accusing Qatar of interfering in their domestic affairs and supporting so-called Islamist groups like the Muslim Brotherhood. A summit in the Saudi capital Riyadh last month managed to overcome the crisis that seriously threatened to breakl up the GCC itself. As a result the three ambassadors returned to Doha, paving the way for the summit. But can the Doha summit end the deep divisions among the GCC countries? And is the bloc itslef serving any purpose?
