Deputy Kevin Haverly, 26, died in the accident on Route 23 in Ashland at about 6:15 a.m, Lt. Adam Brainard, of the sheriff’s office, said Tuesday morning. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, Brainard said. Haverly was on duty working the night shift, starting at 7 p.m. Monday and ending 7 a.m. Tuesday. He was driving a Ford SUV police interceptor vehicle west on Route 23 when his vehicle left the road and hit a telephone pole, state police said. Haverly was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said. “It was a pretty severe accident,” Brainard said. Brainard could not provide details regarding Haverly’s injuries or whether he had been ejected from the SUV when he was found, but added Haverly was not taken to the hospital for treatment. There is no indication alcohol or drugs were involved, Brainard said. A state police accident reconstruction unit was called to the scene and the accident remains under investigation, Brainard said. The reconstruction unit was at the scene as of 2:30 p.m. Tuesday conducting an investigation into what caused the accident, state police Senior Investigator Pete Kusminsky said. The Greene County Sheriff’s Office, state police and the Ashland Fire Department responded. Haverly worked for the sheriff’s office since July 2014. Prior to his position as a deputy, Haverly worked for the sheriff’s office for a period of time at the Greene County Jail, Brainard said. A GoFundMe page for Haverly’s family has been set up to raise money for his funeral other expenses. Haverly left behind a wife, Dawn, and three children, according to the GoFundMe site. Many Facebook users have posted about Haverly’s death and shared their condolences, including the Albany and Englewood, New Jersey, police departments and State Sen. George Amedore, R-46. Columbia County Sheriff David Bartlett said he knew Haverly through his work with the Shared Services Response Team, which is comprised of members of the Hudson Police Department and Columbia County and Greene County sheriff’s offices. The young deputy’s death is difficult for police, Bartlett said, because Haverly was a fellow officer who died in the line of duty. “It’s such a shame,” Bartlett said. “This one hits close to home because they’re all family.” Haverly enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Northern Catskills Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, chapter president Russ Burton said. Burton described Haverly as an upbeat, positive and nice man. The pair were friends for eight years. “We’re gonna miss him,” Burton said. “He always brightened up the room.” Haverly was active in the chapter’s work with the Wounded Warriors Project and he went above and beyond to help others, Burton said. “He was dedicated to the Wounded Warriors,” Burton said. “He spent more time helping other people than doing things for himself.” State police at Catskill are asking anyone who might have witnessed the accident to call 518-622-8600.
