By the late nineteenth century, the Western obsession with things Chinese was in decline. Europe had stuffed its parlours with Chinoiserie and long slaked its thirst for the subtler varieties of Chinese teas. It became both convenient and consoling to forget that China had invented just about everything before anyone else had. However, there was one area in which curiosity had not entirely abated. China, it seemed, still had an abundance of hitherto unexplored exotica to offer the botanically inclined, Thus the earliest driving force for Western incursions into remote Lijiang and its mountainous setting arose neither from commercial incentives, nor missionary zeal, but from the desire to acquire fresh specimens for European gardens. Plant collectors were the advance guard of a new age that would come to cloud Lijiang's untroubled and hitherto far horizons. And in their own way, these horticulturists were just as recklessly adventurous as any intrepid explorer striding into unmapped African bush, or charting barely navigable Brazilian rivers. By no means one of the first, but easily ranking among the doughtiest of these was Joseph Francis Rock, an American immigrant of Austrian extraction who set up his home in the environs of Lijiang in 1922 and remained there, on an off, for the next 27 years. Prodigally funded by various institutions, including Harvard University, the U.S. National Museum, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Arnold Arboretum, Rock collected not only rare plants but bird and animal specimens, Naxi folklore and a host of experiences that he colourfully described in the pages of National Geographic magazine, inspiring the American poet Ezra Pound to write:
And over Li Chiang, the snow range is turquoise
Rock's world that he saved us for memory
A thin trace in high air
Today Rock's home in Nguluko Village, named for "the foot of the silver cliffs", is occupied by one of his former muleteers, Li Wenbiao, and faithfully preserved much as it was when tenanted by the largely self-taught botanist, ethnographer, linguist, cartographer, photographer, author and explorer with a latter-day Renaissance range of interests and an insatiable appetite for the unknown. A ground floor annexe is filled with lovingly framed pages extracted from the numerous articles Rock wrote for National Geographic, while the top floor of the main building remains very much as it was when Rock used it as combined bed-sitting room and office. The atmosphere is less of a museum than of a shrine to the esteemed "Doctor Lock", as he is lovingly remembered by the Naxi among whom he lived and whose language and culture he so devotedly studied.

China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. Chris Brown
Christopher Maurice "Chris" Brown (born May 5, 1989) is an American singer, dancer, rapper and actor. Born in Tappahannock, Virginia, he was involved in his church choir and several local talent shows from a young age. Having signed with Jive Records in 2004, Brown released his self-titled debut studio album the following year. It peaked at number two on the US Billboard 200 and was later certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). With his first single "Run It!" peaking atop the US Billboard Hot 100, Brown became the first male artist as a lead since Diddy in 1997 to have his debut single top the chart. His second album Exclusive (2007) spawned his second Hot 100 number one "Kiss Kiss", in addition to "With You" and "Forever". The album was also certified double platinum by the RIAA.
In 2009, Brown received much media attention after pleading guilty to felony assault of his then girlfriend, singer Rihanna; he was sentenced to five years of probation and six months of community service. His third album Graffiti was released later that year, and included the top-twenty single "I Can Transform Ya". Brown's fourth album F.A.M.E. (2011) became his first to top the Billboard 200; it spawned the successful singles "Yeah 3x", "Look at Me Now", and "Beautiful People". F.A.M.E. earned Brown his first Grammy Award for Best R&B Album at the 54th Grammy Awards. His fifth album Fortune was released in 2012. However, after the release of Exclusive, Brown's albums have not been well received commercially or by music critics, with the exception of X, which received a normalized rating of 63. Brown's seventh studio album Royalty was released on December 18, 2015.

By the late nineteenth century, the Western obsession with things Chinese was in decline. Europe had stuffed its parlours with Chinoiserie and long slaked its thirst for the subtler varieties of Chinese teas. It became both convenient and consoling to forget that China had invented just about everything before anyone else had. However, there was one area in which curiosity had not entirely abated. China, it seemed, still had an abundance of hitherto unexplored exotica to offer the botanically inclined, Thus the earliest driving force for Western incursions into remote Lijiang and its mountainous setting arose neither from commercial incentives, nor missionary zeal, but from the desire to acquire fresh specimens for European gardens. Plant collectors were the advance guard of a new age that would come to cloud Lijiang's untroubled and hitherto far horizons. And in their own way, these horticulturists were just as recklessly adventurous as any intrepid explorer striding into unmapped African bush, or charting barely navigable Brazilian rivers. By no means one of the first, but easily ranking among the doughtiest of these was Joseph Francis Rock, an American immigrant of Austrian extraction who set up his home in the environs of Lijiang in 1922 and remained there, on an off, for the next 27 years. Prodigally funded by various institutions, including Harvard University, the U.S. National Museum, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Arnold Arboretum, Rock collected not only rare plants but bird and animal specimens, Naxi folklore and a host of experiences that he colourfully described in the pages of National Geographic magazine, inspiring the American poet Ezra Pound to write:

A thin trace in high air
Today Rock's home in Nguluko Village, named for "the foot of the silver cliffs", is occupied by one of his former muleteers, Li Wenbiao, and faithfully preserved much as it was when tenanted by the largely self-taught botanist, ethnographer, linguist, cartographer, photographer, author and explorer with a latter-day Renaissance range of interests and an insatiable appetite for the unknown. A ground floor annexe is filled with lovingly framed pages extracted from the numerous articles Rock wrote for National Geographic, while the top floor of the main building remains very much as it was when Rock used it as combined bed-sitting room and office. The atmosphere is less of a museum than of a shrine to the esteemed "Doctor Lock", as he is lovingly remembered by the Naxi among whom he lived and whose language and culture he so devotedly studied.

Top Things to do in China! I know that this is long overdue and that I haven't posted a video in a while, but seriously China!! Anyways, this list is less about the top attractions in China and more about the best ones. Moreover, it features the off the beaten path destinations in China as well. So what are the most incredible things to do in China. Here's my take: 10) Changsha and the Mao Zedong Staute (长沙和毛泽东雕像) This is crazy, in the capital of Hunan Province there's a giant statue of Mao Zedong that looks like something out of Mount Rushmore. In part two of my video travel guide to India I travel to Bodhgaya, one of the most sacred places in all of the Buddhist religion. It was at this location 2,500 years ago that a young Prince Siddhartha sat under a fig tree, meditated and found enlightenment, thus becoming the Buddha. I start off by visiting the many temples that have been built by various Buddhists from around the world, including temples dedicated to Buddhists living in China, Japan, Tibet and Nepal. I then visit the Tergar Monastery, one of the largest Buddhist complexes in the region, which is a short walk from the main road. The Imperial City is entered through the Gates of Heavenly Peace.After seven years of construction, Ming Emperor Zhu Di moved into his newly-established palace complex in which over eight thousand people lived in almost a thousand rooms. The palace served as both a residential and governmental seat to the emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. A stone’s throw away from the old Summer Palace is the Garden of Harmonious Unity that was the favourite garden of the Emperor’s household who retreated to its cool lakeside shores during the humid months of summer. Close to Badaling the Great Wall Of China extends majestically across misty mountains. It is the largest Man-made structure in the world and was erected to protect the country from invasion from the North. The gigantic wall represented the division of two very different cultures. On one side the Central Asian Nomads and on the other the highly developed civilisation of the emerging Chinese Empire. Shanghai is a Gigantic City and a meeting point of both east and west. The shoreline is without a doubt the city’s main focal point and is a combination of past, present and future and contains the historic monuments and eye catching buildings of a great city. Famous explorer Marco Polo referred to Suzhou as the ‘Venice of the East’, a city that is particularly famous for its gardens. Many of its extremely elegant buildings are remnants of a glorious past. Yunnan´s most famous site is the unique Stone Forest Of Shi Lin, a forest of rock that extends for 27,000 hectares. Hong Kong is a city of the superlative with glimmering skyscrapers that seem to take root in the sky and one elegant building after another with shining glass and hi-tech facades. Top Things to do in China!
I know that this is long overdue and that I haven't posted a video in a while, but seriously China!! Anyways, this list is less about the top attractions in China and more about the best ones. Moreover, it features the off the beaten path destinations in China as well. So what are the most incredible things to do in China. Here's my take:
10) Changsha and the Mao Zedong Staute (长沙和毛泽东雕像)
This is crazy, in the capital of Hunan Province there's a giant statue of Mao Zedong that looks like something out of Mount Rushmore. Definitely a top thing to see in China.
9) Bifengxia Panda Base (碧峰峡大熊猫保护区)
The Panda Center in Chengdu is a bit over-touristed. That's why it's a great option to head to Bifengxia on the edge of the village of Ya'an, and up to this amazing place to visit in China.
8) Dunhuang Oasis (敦煌绿洲)
Up in Gansu Province there are a lot of amazing places to see! The Dunhuang Desert Oasis is an extension of the Gobi and is unreal!
7) The Westernmost Section of the Great Wall of China in Jiayuguan (对中国的嘉峪关长城的最西端科)
Sure, most people travel China specifically to see the Great Wall. Most head to Beijing. If you want an off-the-beaten-path option than Jiayuguan is perfect.
6) Yangshuo (阳朔)
In Guanxi Province Yangshuo is awesome. Limestone karst landscapes and beautiful river scenes make this an easy addition to the top things to see in China.
5) Mati Si and the Cliff Temples (马蒂思崖寺)
Mati Si is really cool. It's famous for the Buddhist Cliff temples, and they are very cool. Full of grottos and caves, this is a must see in China.
4) Zhangye Rainbow Mountains (张掖彩虹山)
This was probably the #1 thing I was looking forward to in China. However, most people don't even know about it. The Zhangye Rainbow Mountains are unreal, and a worthy addition to a travel itinerary in China that is full of amazing attractions.
3) Shangrila and the Songzanlin Monastery (香格里拉和松赞林寺)
Up on the border of Tibet in Yunan Province, the town of Shangrila is a really interesting visit. Lots of colourful people, interesting architecture, and the amazing Songzanlin Monastery.
2) Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces (龙的骨干梯田)
Near Guilin, the Drangon's Backbone Rice Terraces are a must-see in China. They were close to ending up as the number one thing to see in China on this list, but even the amazing landscapes of this place couldn't beat out...
1) Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and the Avatar Mountains (张家界国家森林公园和阿凡达山)
Actually, this was fairly easily my #1 Thing to see in China. The avatar mountains in Zhangjiajie National Forest park are crazy cool. The incredible mountains were the inspiration for the movie avatar. You need to see this place with your own eyes!

Top Things to do in China!
I know that this is long overdue and that I haven't posted a video in a while, but seriously China!! Anyways, this list is less about the top attractions in China and more about the best ones. Moreover, it features the off the beaten path destinations in China as well. So what are the most incredible things to do in China. Here's my take:

In part two of my video travel guide to India I travel to Bodhgaya, one of the most sacred places in all of the Buddhist religion. It was at this location 2,500 years ago that a young Prince Siddhartha sat under a fig tree, meditated and found enlightenment, thus becoming the Buddha.
I start off by visiting the many temples that have been built by various Buddhists from around the world, including temples dedicated to Buddhists living in China, Japan, Tibet and Nepal. I then visit the Tergar Monastery, one of the largest Buddhist complexes in the region, which is a short walk from the main road.
I then head to the sacred Mahabodhi Temple complex in the center of town. At sunset it is a scenic, peaceful time to explore the grounds, which include a large monument built at the Bodhi Tree itself, as well as a sprawling garden area where people come from around the world to meditate.

Europe had stuffed its parlours with Chinoiserie and long slaked its thirst for the subtler varieties of Chinese teas. It became both convenient and consoling to forget that China had invented just about everything before anyone else had. However, there was one area in which curiosity had not entirely abated. It became both convenient and consoling to forget that China had invented just about everything before anyone else had. However, there was one area in which curiosity had not entirely abated. China, it seemed, still had an abundance of hitherto unexplored exotica to offer the botanically inclined, Thus the earliest driving force for Western incursions into remote Lijiang and its mountainous setting arose neither from commercial incentives, nor missionary zeal, but from the desire to acquire fresh specimens for European gardens. Plant collectors were the advance guard of a new age that would come to cloud Lijiang's untroubled and hitherto far horizons. And in their own way, these horticulturists were just as recklessly adventurous as any intrepid explorer striding into unmapped African bush, or charting barely navigable Brazilian rivers. By no means one of the first, but easily ranking among the doughtiest of these was Joseph Francis Rock, an American immigrant of Austrian extraction who set up his home in the environs of Lijiang in 1922 and remained there, on an off, for the next 27 years. Prodigally funded by various institutions, including Harvard University, the U.S. National Museum, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Arnold Arboretum, Rock collected not only rare plants but bird and animal specimens, Naxi folklore and a host of experiences that he colourfully described in the pages of National Geographic magazine, inspiring the American poet Ezra Pound to write:

Rock's world that he saved us for memory
A thin trace in high air
Today Rock's home in Nguluko Village, named for "the foot of the silver cliffs", is occupied by one of his former muleteers, Li Wenbiao, and faithfully preserved much as it was when tenanted by the largely self-taught botanist, ethnographer, linguist, cartographer, photographer, author and explorer with a latter-day Renaissance range of interests and an insatiable appetite for the unknown. A ground floor annexe is filled with lovingly framed pages extracted from the numerous articles Rock wrote for National Geographic, while the top floor of the main building remains very much as it was when Rock used it as combined bed-sitting room and office. The atmosphere is less of a museum than of a shrine to the esteemed "Doctor Lock", as he is lovingly remembered by the Naxi among whom he lived and whose language and culture he so devotedly studied.

Kyra Bobinet, MD, MPH is the Senior Instructor-Researcher of Health Engagement in Stanford University’s Behavior Design Lab. In her current research, she researches the combination of engaging technology and its health benefits and risks. Dr. Bobinet has empowered millions of individuals and families in all aspects of their holistic health for over two decades, through founding a behavior health non-profit, leading public health programs, and innovating as medical director of a national healthcare organization.
Britt Johnson chronicles the absurdity of living with chronic disease through her blog and related social media platforms, “The Hurt Blogger.” She is a writer sharing honest experiences of life with chronic pain and illness while always looking for the humor in life. She works as a consultant with a wide range of health groups to ensure patient input is being incorporated to better shape the future of healthcare. Having lived with autoimmune arthritis since age seven, she aims to change the perception of ‘arthritis’ while challenging what is possible by training for her childhood dream of climbing Denali (Mt. McKinley). Having lived in Texas, Alaska, and Montana, she currently resides in Los Angeles, CA with her husband and one very stubborn cat, and works for Stanford Medicine X as the Community Outreach Coordinator. Dr. Amster is a graduate of UC Irvine School of Medicine, and completed his Anesthesia-based Pain Medicine fellowship at the University of Iowa School of Medicine and residency at UC Davis School of Medicine.
