Cité Soleil (Haitian Creole: Site Solèy; English: Sun City) is an extremely impoverished and densely populated commune ("city") located in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area in Haiti. Cité Soleil originally developed as a shanty town and grew to an estimated 200,000 to 400,000 residents, the majority of whom live in extreme poverty. The area is generally regarded as one of the poorest and most dangerous areas of the Western Hemisphere and it is one of the biggest slums in the Northern Hemisphere. The area has virtually no sewers and has a poorly maintained open canal system that serves as its sewage system, few formal businesses but many local commercial activities and enterprises, sporadic but largely free electricity, a few hospitals, and two government school, Lycee Nationale de Cite Soleil, and Ecole Nationale de Cite Soleil. For several years until 2007, the area was ruled by a number of gangs, each controlling their own sectors. But government control was reestablished after a series of operations in early 2007 by the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). with the participation of the local population.

This is a video the UN and Haiti's presidential contenders in the 2010 elections don't want you to see! An antidote to the propaganda and misrepresentations of Ghosts of Cite Soleil (DVD). If Haiti is the 'Most dangerous place on earth' it's primarily due to incidents like this. This is a short documentary produced by HIP and Kevin Pina that covers events which led the community of Cite Soleil to accuse the United Nations of committing a massacre on December 22, 2006. It is also an indictment of the mainstream media, that largely remained silent or spun the incident from the UN perspective. Rather than asking about the deaths of unarmed civilians, the reporters instead focused on UN claims the raid was necessary to rid the neighborhood of gangs. see:http://www.projectcensored.org/top...

He wake up everyday
In a government yard
Deep down inside Citi Soleil
Roll some bones and catch a fire
Evil minds, they will conspire
The moon to lose it's light
The stars sink into night
Across the town
A young girl plays guitar
"Do you remember me?" She sings to a lover
She worships from afar
Roll some bones and catch a fire
Evil minds, they will expire
The moon to shine a light
Upon us all tonight
Ooh child, I'll meet you, child
On the sunny side, it's alright, it's alright
No lies, and no cryin'
It's alright
"How you like me now?"
My friend, he say
"How you like the madness of Citi Soleil?"
Roll the bones and catch a fire
Join the triumph of the choir
Citi Soleil, Citi Soleil
