A police detective is on the trail of a psychopath while dealing with demons of her own in the crime thriller Oxygen. Madeline Foster is a plainclothes detective with the NYPD who isn't especially happy with her job. She drowns her sorrows in alcohol and masochistic sex, though even her husband is unaware of the full extent of her erotic obsessions. Madeline finds herself assigned to investigate an unusual kidnapping; Frances, the wife of a prosperous businessman, has been kidnapped and buried alive. The perpetrators demand the ransom be paid within 24 hours, or the air will run out and Frances will be dead. Madeline surmises that the kidnapper is a career criminal known to the NYPD as "Harry Houdini" for his remarkable ability to escape capture. It soon becomes clear that "Harry" knows who Madeline is, and for him this isn't an ordinary kidnapping but an elaborate psychological game; he is convinced they are alike in more ways than they're different, which makes it all the more fascinating for him.

Although glacial ice is the purest naturally occurring solid on Earth, it does contain dust particles and micron-size bacterial cells transported by winds from desert soils and oceans. Glacial ice contains a network of liquid veins within which microbes live, metabolize, and die, but do not grow. Using scanning fluorescence spectrometry, fluorescence microscopy, and flow cytometry, we have mapped the distribution and concentration of picocyanobacteria – cells less than 1 micron in size that contain chlorophyll and other naturally fluorescing pigments. They account for half of the photosynthetic biomass in the oceans, half of the primary production, and half of the oxygen in our atmosphere. Their presence in ice at all depths in both Greenland and Antarctica provides an opportunity to study microbial evolution over about 100 million generations, using recent improvements in sensitivity to analyze the DNA of the cyanobacteria that are trapped in the ice.
Buford Price received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 1958, was a Fulbright Fellow at Bristol University (England), an NSF Post-doctoral Fellow at Cambridge University, did research at General Electric Research Laboratory from 1960 to 1969, was Professor of Physics at Berkeley 1969 to 2001, Chair of Physics 1987-92, Dean of Physical Sciences 1992-2001, and Professor of the Graduate School at Berkeley since 2001. He was a co-founder of what grew into the 1-cubic-kilometer IceCube High-Energy Neutrino Observatory located in clear ice at depths 1.45 to 2.45 kilometers below the South Pole. He leads research on the optical properties of deep glacial ice, the understanding of which make it possible to track neutrinos from distant parts of the universe through the Earth into IceCube with an angular resolution better than 1 degree. In 1999 he realized that micron-size bacterial cells could live in glacial ice and might limit the angular resolution of neutrinos passing through IceCube. Since then his research has focused on how bacterial cells survive while frozen into deep glacial ice in the polar regions and what they can tell us about microbial evolution.

Oxygen (film)
Oxygen is a 1999 film, directed and written by Richard Shepard. The film follows a troubled cop, Madeline Foster (played by Maura Tierney) as she pursues a kidnapper who calls himself Harry Houdini (Adrien Brody). The film was shot on location in New York City.
Plot
"Harry Houdini" (Adrien Brody) has kidnapped and buried alive a rich businessman's wife. He demands $1 million in cash from the woman's husband in return for the release of the location of her burial site before she runs out of oxygen. He also states that if police involvement is initiated, he will ensure she is never found alive. As expected, however, police involvement is initiated and Detective Madeline Foster (Maura Tierney) is assigned with the task of finding the buried woman and catching Houdini.
It is quickly realized though that Houdini, in fact, wanted the police to get involved so he could commit a second kidnapping - that of Foster. When Houdini is finally caught as the result of a car chase involving him and Detective Foster, she attempts to get him to reveal the location of his buried victim. When Foster's initial interrogation of Houdini proves unsuccessful, the FBI are assigned to take over the case, although they do not have any more luck. In a plot twist, it is revealed that Houdini has already committed a murder, that of his accomplice. He now has nothing to lose and the police realize the death of the buried woman would not be as significant as first thought.

Oxygen is a chemical element with symbol O and atomic number 8. It is a member of the chalcogen group on the periodic table and is a highly reactive nonmetal and oxidizing agent that readily forms compounds (notably oxides) with most elements. By mass, oxygen is the third-most abundant element in the universe, after hydrogen and helium. Most of the mass of living organisms is oxygen as it is a part of water, the major constituent of lifeforms. Oxygen is used in cellular respiration and released by photosynthesis, which uses the energy of sunlight to produce oxygen from water. It is too chemically reactive to remain a free element in air without being continuously replenished by the photosynthetic action of living organisms. Another form (allotrope) of oxygen, ozone (O
3), strongly absorbs UVB radiation and consequently the high-altitude ozone layer helps protect the biosphere from ultraviolet radiation, but is a pollutant near the surface where it is a by-product of smog. At even higher low earth orbit altitudes, sufficient atomic oxygen is present to cause erosion for spacecraft.

Although glacial ice is the purest naturally occurring solid on Earth, it does contain dust particles and micron-size bacterial cells transported by winds from desert soils and oceans. Glacial ice contains a network of liquid veins within which microbes live, metabolize, and die, but do not grow. Using scanning fluorescence spectrometry, fluorescence microscopy, and flow cytometry, we have mapped the distribution and concentration of picocyanobacteria – cells less than 1 micron in size that contain chlorophyll and other naturally fluorescing pigments. They account for half of the photosynthetic biomass in the oceans, half of the primary production, and half of the oxygen in our atmosphere. Their presence in ice at all depths in both Greenland and Antarctica provides an opportunity to study microbial evolution over about 100 million generations, using recent improvements in sensitivity to analyze the DNA of the cyanobacteria that are trapped in the ice.
Buford Price received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 1958, was a Fulbright Fellow at Bristol University (England), an NSF Post-doctoral Fellow at Cambridge University, did research at General Electric Research Laboratory from 1960 to 1969, was Professor of Physics at Berkeley 1969 to 2001, Chair of Physics 1987-92, Dean of Physical Sciences 1992-2001, and Professor of the Graduate School at Berkeley since 2001. He was a co-founder of what grew into the 1-cubic-kilometer IceCube High-Energy Neutrino Observatory located in clear ice at depths 1.45 to 2.45 kilometers below the South Pole. He leads research on the optical properties of deep glacial ice, the understanding of which make it possible to track neutrinos from distant parts of the universe through the Earth into IceCube with an angular resolution better than 1 degree. In 1999 he realized that micron-size bacterial cells could live in glacial ice and might limit the angular resolution of neutrinos passing through IceCube. Since then his research has focused on how bacterial cells survive while frozen into deep glacial ice in the polar regions and what they can tell us about microbial evolution.

Sacoglossan sea slugs participate in a type of cell-level symbiosis, termed kleptoplasty, whereby chloroplasts obtained from their algal food source are taken up by, and maintained inside, specialized gut cells. The two species of slugs we are studying, Elysia chlorotica and Elysia crispata, can maintain their chloroplasts in a functional state for several months. Under bright light the symbiotic chloroplasts photosynthesize, fixing carbon and evolving oxygen in the slug cell as if they were still in the algae. We are investigating the symbiosis at the protein and genetic levels, in order to understand the adaptations that allow the slugs to maintain chloroplast function for such extended periods of time. In particular, we have demonstrated that synthesis of chloroplast proteins continues for the duration of the symbiosis. Some of proteins synthesized in the slug chloroplasts appear to be photosynthetic proteins that are universally encoded by nuclear genes in algae and plants. Our pharmacological evidence indicates that indeed these proteins are synthesized in the slug cell from nuclear genes. So we are currently testing the slug for the presence of algal nuclear genes encoding photosynthetic proteins.

Sacoglossan sea slugs participate in a type of cell-level symbiosis, termed kleptoplasty, whereby chloroplasts obtained from their algal food source are taken up by, and maintained inside, specialized gut cells. The two species of slugs we are studying, Elysia chlorotica and Elysia crispata, can maintain their chloroplasts in a functional state for several months. Under bright light the symbiotic chloroplasts photosynthesize, fixing carbon and evolving oxygen in the slug cell as if they were still in the algae. We are investigating the symbiosis at the protein and genetic levels, in order to understand the adaptations that allow the slugs to maintain chloroplast function for such extended periods of time. In particular, we have demonstrated that synthesis of chloroplast proteins continues for the duration of the symbiosis. Some of proteins synthesized in the slug chloroplasts appear to be photosynthetic proteins that are universally encoded by nuclear genes in algae and plants. Our pharmacological evidence indicates that indeed these proteins are synthesized in the slug cell from nuclear genes. So we are currently testing the slug for the presence of algal nuclear genes encoding photosynthetic proteins.

Two steps forward, one giant step backwards. I?m Benjamin Higginbotham and this is your SpacePod for December 14th, 2010. It?s now official. NASA will be rolling back Space Shuttle Discovery to the Vehicle Assembly Building. But before NASA does that, engineers will conduct taking tests at the pad no earlier than this Friday. During the tanking tests, half a million pounds of super cooled liquid hydrogen and oxygen will be loaded in to the iconic orange external tank. NASA will not only be filling the tanks, but also keeping the fuel there in a faux countdown designed to simulate launch day. Much like an actual shuttle countdown there will be a series of holds giving NASA crew time to check the tank, as well as full pressurization as the clock nears T-0. When the tanking is done engineers will roll Discovery back to the VAB for additional X-Ray inspections on the back of the external tank. If no additional problems are found then Discovery will re-roll back to the launch pad around January 14th for the next launch window of February 3rd through the 10th. Since its first flight in 1984, Space Shuttle Discovery has been rolled back to the VAB 5 times. The first being after a pad abort on STS-41D in 1984, then again after cracks were found on lug hinges for STS-39 in 1991. Again after woodpeckers drilled around 195 holes in the external tank foam for STS-70 in 1995. Once more for foam insulation problem in 1999 for STS-96 and again in 2005 for STS-114 in order to get a new external tank in preparation to return to flight. This will be the 6th time and potentially final time Discovery has had to roll back in what will be it?s 27 year history. Once Discovery is ready for launch there will be hundreds of cameras capturing ascent. Recently the 45 minute long video ?Ascent? has been made available on YouTube, created and narrated by NASA engineer Matt Melles and Kevin Burke. This is some of the most amazing space imagery and geekery you?re going to see for a long while! Here?s just a small sample, but you really should check out the entire 45 minute clip! On the lighter side, Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne has completed assembly of the oxidizer turbopump on the all new J-2X rocket engine. The turbopump is one of the most important and difficult parts to make in a rocket engine, so this is a great step forward for J-2X. This new rocket engine will be used in upper stage of NASA?s upcoming... Lets end this SpacePod on some New Space News, shall we? It sounds like Orbital Sciences and Virgin Galactic may be teaming up! Orbital is looking to put 4 humans in to orbit around the year 2015 or so, in a bid to win NASAs Commercial Crew Development 2 contract. Orbitals new spacecraft would launch atop the time tested Atlas 5 rocket carrying 3 astronauts and one paying space tourist to the International Space Station. So where does Virgin Galactic fit in all this? Virgin would market the commercial rides, conduct drop tests using their WhiteKnight 2 vehicle and offer transport services for the craft should there be an in-flight abort. Interesting bed fellows as Virgin is also expected to announce their intentions to go after the NASA contract later this week. No official word on that yet, but with all this competition it sounds like your chances of going to space keep getting better and better and better!

Several times I have been here, and this place never fails to amaze me! This time, however, Tess and I brought the kids along for their one-of-a-kind adventure and to see for themselves the very place they voted for as one of the New7Wonders of nature.
The river is also called Puerto Princesa Underground River. The national park is located in the Saint Paul Mountain Range on the northern coast of the island. It is bordered by St. Paul Bay to the north and the Babuyan River to the east. The City Government of Puerto Princesa has managed the National Park since 1992. The park is also known as St. Paul's Subterranean River National Park, or St. Paul Underground River. The entrance to the Subterranean River is a short motor boat ride from the town of Sabang.
The park has a limestone karst mountain landscape. The main attraction here is St. Pauls Underground River Cave - a more than 24 km long cave, which contains an 8.2-kilometer-long underground section of Cabayugan River. A distinguishing feature of the river is that it winds through the cave before flowing directly into the West Philippine Sea, and is navigable with a boat up to 4 kilometres in from the sea. Beyond this point, a special permit from the municipal government must be secured in order to navigate the remainder of the river. This travel would be approximately 3 hours from and back. The cave includes major formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and several large chambers, including the 360-meter-long Italian's Chamber with approximate 2.5 million square meters volume - one of the largest cave rooms in the world.
In 2010, a group of environmentalists and geologists discovered that the underground river has a second floor, which means that there are small waterfalls inside the cave. They also found a huge cave dome, measuring 300 meters above the underground river, incredible rock formations, large bats, a deep water hole in the river, more river channels, another deep cave, marine creatures, and more. And because it's very dark inside and very hard to get oxygen, it's dangerous for humans, so they didn't uncover all of the mysteries of this deep underground river.
On November 11, 2011, Puerto Princesa Underground River was provisionally chosen as one of the New7Wonders of Nature. This selection was officially confirmed on January 28, 2012.
The area also represents a habitat for biodiversity conservation. The site contains a full mountain-to-the-sea ecosystem and has some of the most important forests in Asia. It was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site on December 4, 1999.
