David (/ˈdeɪvɪd/; Hebrew: דָּוִד, Modern David, Tiberian Dāwîḏ;ISO 259-3 Dawid; Arabic: داوُد Dāwūd; Syriac: ܕܘܝܕ Dawid; Ancient Greek: Δαυίδ; Latin: Davidus, David; Strong's: Daveed) was, according to the Books of Samuel, the second king of the United Kingdom of Israel, and according to the New Testament, an ancestor of Jesus. His life is conventionally dated to c. 1040 – 970 BCE, his reign over Judah c. 1010–970 BCE.
The Books of Samuel, 1 Kings, and 1 Chronicles are the only Old Testament sources of information on David, although the Tel Dan Stele (dated c. 850–835 BCE) contains the phrase בית דוד (bytdwd), read as "House of David", which many scholars confirm to be a likely plausible match to the existence in the mid-9th century BCE of a Judean royal dynasty called the House of David.
Depicted as a valorous warrior of great renown, and a poet and musician credited for composing much of the psalms contained in the Book of Psalms, King David is widely viewed as a righteous and effective king in battle and civil justice. He is described as a man after God's own heart in 1 Samuel 13:14 and Acts 13:22.

From about 1500 BC to 1200 BC, the Mediterranean region played host to a complex cosmopolitan and globalized world-system. It may have been this very internationalism that contributed to the apocalyptic disaster that ended the Bronze Age. When the end came, the civilized and international world of the Mediterranean regions came to a dramatic halt in a vast area stretching from Greece and Italy in the west to Egypt, Canaan, and Mesopotamia in the east. Large empires and small kingdoms collapsed rapidly. With their end came the world’s first recorded Dark Ages. It was not until centuries later that a new cultural renaissance emerged in Greece and the other affected areas, setting the stage for the evolution of Western society as we know it today. David A. Huse Princeton University October 15, 2013 An isolated quantum many-body system may be a reservoir that thermalizes its constituents. I will explore an example of the interplay of this thermalization and spontaneous symmetry-breaking, in the ferromagnetic phase of an infinite-range quantum Ising model. For a system of N spins, the barrier that must be crossed to flip the magnetization is of order N. The unitary quantum dynamics of this system can cross this barrier either by thermally activating itself over the barrier, or by quantum tunneling through the barrier. In the limit of large N, there is a dynamical phase transition, with the thermal process happening at temperatures above the phase transition. There is another phase transition at a lower temperature between phases where...

SBFC 205: Push my Grandma onto a Microsoft Update (feat. Plague of Gripes)
2017 is the 20th anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. As one of the most famous women on the planet, Diana had an acute sense of the importance of fashion, controlling her own image and understanding that clothing could be an art form with extraordinary possibilities to convey message and meaning. This programme, produced in collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces and presented by Brenda Emmanus, looks at some of Diana's most celebrated and exquisite dresses, brought together for a new exhibition of her clothes at Kensington Palace in February. Brenda visits the Conservation Studio at Hampton Court Palace as the dresses are prepared for display, and she hears from historians, cultural commentators and the designers who dressed Diana, including Elizabeth Emanuel, Victor E...
Ancient DNA and the new science of the human past Air date: Wednesday, September 21, 2016, 3:00:00 PM Category: WALS - Wednesday Afternoon Lectures Runtime: 01:05:46 Description: NIH Director's Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Beginning in 2010, it became practical to sequence whole genomes from DNA extracted from ancient human boness, and to analyze the data to understand changes in biology over time. Since that timethen, the amount of ancient DNA data has increased at an extraordinary rate, with the number of samples with at least one-fold genome coverage being 5 five in 2013, 18 in 2014, and 116 in 2015. Dr. Reich will begin his lecture by describing how present-day Europeans derive from a fusion highly divergent ancestral populations as different from each other as are Europeans an...

Oderberg (Reading) An organism is a paradigm of an individual substance. As such, it is a unified entity distinguished metaphysically both from parts of organisms and the larger entities to which some organisms belong. Unity, however, cannot be taken for granted. There is a 'unity problem': assuming organisms have essences, what holds together the constituents of those essences? I argue that nothing less than Aristotelian substantial form will do, contrasting the hylemorphic solution with the important approach ...
