Balderdash

Balderdash is a board game of bluffing and trivia created by Laura Robinson and Paul Toyne, of Toronto, Ontario Canada. The game was first released in 1984, under Canada Games. It was later picked up by a U.S company, The Games Gang, and eventually became the property of Hasbro, and finally Mattel. The game is based on a classic parlor game called Fictionary. The game has sold over 15 million copies worldwide to date. It is aimed at fans of word games, such as Scrabble.

Gameplay

The game begins by all players rolling a die, with the high roll chosen to be the first "dasher". The dasher draws a "definition card" from the supplied box, and rolls the dice to decide which of the words listed there is to be used. Then the dasher writes the definition of the word (as supplied on the card) on a piece of paper. All other players then write down a definition, which may be an honest attempt to supply the correct definition, or, if they do not know or for tactical reasons decide not to, a fictitious definition for the word designed to sound convincing.

Balderdash is an American television panel game show that aired on PAX TV from August 2, 2004 to February 4, 2005 with repeats airing until April 22. It was hosted by Elayne Boosler and announced by John Moschitta. The game was based on the board game of the same name.

Gameplay

Main game

Two contestants competed over the course of three rounds to determine the factuality of statements made by three celebrities.

The two contestants began the first round with 250 points. Boosler gave the contestants a category and the contestants placed a wager. The question was then read to the panel and each celebrity gave an answer. Two of the answers were wrong ("balderdash"), and one celebrity had the correct answer ("truth"). Once the answers were given, the contestants chose a celebrity and whether they thought their answer was truth or balderdash. Correctly identifying a balderdash answer added the amount of the wager to the contestant's score, while correctly identifying an answer as truth paid off at double the wager. Incorrect answers simply lost the amount of the wager.
