Iceland (i/ˈaɪslænd/; Icelandic: Ísland [ˈistlant]), also called the Republic of Iceland, is a Nordic island country between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. It has a population of 329,100 and an area of 103,000 km2 (40,000 sq mi), making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. The capital and largest city is Reykjavík. Reykjavík and the surrounding areas in the southwest of the country are home to over two-thirds of the population. Iceland is volcanically and geologically active. The interior consists of a plateau characterised by sand and lava fields, mountains and glaciers, while many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a temperate climate, despite a high latitude just outside the Arctic Circle. Its high latitude and marine influence still keeps summers chilly, with most of the archipelago having a tundra climate.
According to Landnámabók, the settlement of Iceland began in the year 874 when the Norwegian chieftain Ingólfr Arnarson became the first permanent settler on the island. In the following centuries, mainly Norwegians and to a smaller extent other Scandinavians settled Iceland, bringing with them thralls of Gaelic origin. From 1262 to 1814, Iceland was ruled by Norway and afterwards by Denmark. Until the 20th century, the country relied largely on fishing and agriculture. Iceland became independent in 1918 and a republic in 1944. Industrialisation of the fisheries and Marshall Plan aid following World War II brought prosperity and Iceland became one of the wealthiest and most developed nations in the world. In 1994, it became a part of the European Economic Area, which supported diversification into economic and financial services.

The economy of Iceland is small and subject to high volatility. In 2011, gross domestic product was US$12.3bn. With a population of 321,000, this is $38,000 per capita, based on purchasing power parity estimates. The financial crisis of 2007–2010 produced a decline in GDP and employment, although the magnitude of this decline remains to be determined. Iceland has a mixed economy with high levels of free trade and government intervention. However, government consumption is less than other Nordic countries. Iceland decided to let its banks go bust and prosecuted bankers as criminals during the financial crisis of 2008, taking a different approach than the US and Europe who fined banks, but let chief executives escape punishment. As a result, Iceland took a huge financial hit, but was able to achieve economic recovery 'without compromising its welfare model' of universal healthcare and education, according to the International Monetary Fund. We discuss the significance of Iceland's approach on the Lip News with Elliot Hill and Mark Sovel. http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/world-news/imf-data-shows-icelands-economy-recovered-after-it-imprisoned-bankers-and-let-banks-go-bust-instead-of-bailing-them-out-31292885.html http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/three-charts-that-show-i...
War is never fun, exciting or a source of glory for anyone (well, at least it shouldn’t be). Only someone who hasn’t experienced it firsthand would believe such a thing. As many have put it over the years: “War is hell,” pure and simple. And because this statement is a fact, most countries around the world have prepared themselves accordingly, unwilling to be taken unawares by a military invasion. Though actual wars for conquest are a rare thing nowadays, this doesn’t mean that armed conflicts don’t happen. →Subscribe for new videos every day! https://www.youtube.com/user/toptenznet?sub_confirmation=1 Find more lists at: http://www.toptenz.net →Top 10 Objects That Were Clearly Invented Just to Annoy Physics: https://youtu.be/0MVGeRa-vLo Entertaining and educational top 10 lists from Top...

Health Care in ICELAND from "International Health Care Systems". The Icelandic health care system is publicly financed through taxes. There is equal access to all levels of care with no gate keeping system or referral required. About 20% of the total cost is carried by the consumers out-of-pocket, with 80% covered by the state driven social security system. The private sector, mostly specialist care and dental service is covered about 30-40% but primary care and hospitals are 90-100% covered. The current health care expenditure is 9.3% of GDP. The financial crisis of 2008 has put serious constraints on the financing of the state driven health care system. Only 1.6% of the total health expenditure is invested in organized public health and prevention programmes. (Country report ICELAND – D...

This is footage taken from the beautiful country of Iceland. I traveled there with a good friend in September of 2012 and toured the Southwest section. Much of the land was shaped by volcanic eruptions and carved out by glaciers. Hope you enjoy it! Footage was shot with a Canon 7D and a Canon EF24-70mm f/2.8L Music is by the Iceland band Bloodgroup. Decoding Iceland offers a time-lapse look at Iceland’s wild ride through the last decades, and how it fits patterns of an 1100-year history. The film follows the rise and fall of a genetics company, the government that enabled it, and the culture that brought about that government. In the 1990s Decode Genetics arrived, claiming it would find breakthrough cures due to Iceland’s isolation and extensive health care data. In spite of ethical questions, gold fever swept a nation that invested heavily in the firm, hoping to get rich quick. Over the next decade, over one-third of the Icelandic population donated blood samples and medical records to the company while it lost hundreds of millions, bankrupting numerous Icelanders. Amidst Iceland’s financial meltdown in 2009, the company it...

This is another feature-long film on one of the many visits of spiritual teacher and peace advovate Sri Chinmoy (1931-2007) to a foreign country in the year 2000. The campaign was a huge success on every level and had an over 90% participation rate amongst children ages 3-7 years old. The program was so successful that a Gallup Study revealed that 82% of parents noticed a positive change in the diet in their kids. The local retail sponsor recorded a 22% increase in the consumption of fruits and veggies. LazyTown won the prestigous Scandinavian Health Award and the Minister of Health of Iceland recognized LazyTown has a big factor in the decline of childhood obesity trends in Iceland.

With a population of only 300,000, Iceland can feel like the most isolated place on earth, yet its capital Reykjavik, is only a three-hour flight from London and just under six from New York. Reykjavik is relaxed and welcoming, yet possesses a cultural life that holds its own against other European capitals. Most buildings are built simple and low to beat the North Atlantic winds. However, the city is also graced with grand civic architecture inspired by Iceland’s natural beauty, such as the soaring central tower of Hallgrímskirkja. Many of the country’s most popular sights are within easy reach of Reykjavík. Immerse yourself in the spirit of Iceland, at the Blue Lagoon. Then spend a day or two in The Golden Circle, an area which encompasses three of Iceland’s greatest natural wonders;...

Travel video about destination Iceland. Iceland is an island born of fire and ice with white glaciers, black beaches and green meadows: a land of geysers, waterfalls and volcanoes.Reykjavik is set amid a fascinating landscape, a metropolis on the outermost edge of civilisation and the world’s northernmost capital city. A little outside the city is an attraction that is a meeting place for one and all, The Blue Lagoon, the largest bath tub in the world! The mineral water it contains has a temperature of forty degrees centigrade and the milky-blue pool has been proven to possess beneficial healing qualities. Southeast of The Blue Lagoon is Hveragerdi that is set within an idyllic valley. Due to its protected location and numerous thermal springs, in 1929 a garden city originated there and wi...

This is an overview of the perfect travel rig for shooting professional photo and video. The foundation is two carry-ons that can be easily transported between cars, planes, hotels, and the field. This rig is meant for a solo-operator, in an extreme location, when time, space and image quality are crucial concerns. It is optimized for quick setup and breakdown. This rig is "lightweight" relative to a full pro kit -- it is not intended to replace a hobbyist's backpack. My brother and I took a trip to Iceland for a few days on a limited budget and with no real plan. All we wanted was to explore and experience this beautiful big island! We brought a tent, our thumbs and started hitchhiking. Here is short video of what we saw and experienced at some extraordinary and beautiful places. Collection of drone aerial shots captured in Iceland during August 2015. During the 10 days we were there we spent a lot of the time travelling by 4x4, hence so many shots of the vehicle in action. Most of the time I was inside the car controlling the drone using a video downlink. I would hop out, set the drone off and chase the car as we drove to the next location, sometimes 2 or 3km. Many of the tourist spots that feature in this video were very busy during the day. This isn't good for flying a drone because of the danger factor but also doesn't look good in the footage. During the Summer the sun sets at around 12 midnight and rises again at 3.30am.. it never really got dark which allowed us to film all through the 'night' while these spots were the quietest. This was exhausting but the...

In 2013 I went for a Travel. For 7 months I filmed a lot of beautiful waves and surfed a couple myself in amongst travelling to all sorts of cities. I met a tonne of great people and saw some amazing places in both Europe and Indonesia-time has passed and I never put this up. I've never liked showing off other peoples waves but all of these places are well and truly known about these days and I think it's a shame not to show people what's out there! Made me quite nostalgic thinking about this year that seems so long ago now. Enjoy some waves in Indonesia, Scotland, Iceland, Ireland and in my homeland Tasmania. A big thanks to Chris, Dean & Jodie for having me as their Surf Guide and to anyone who helped us out with a place to stay along the way. Riders and friends that feature in order ar...

A plate steel object was fired
And I did not feel for my compatriots
Hated even the core of myself
Not a matter of ill-health
It was fear of weakness deep in core of myself
The fact attainment was out of...
Mounting orations
..populations
To be humbled in Iceland
Sing of legend, sing of destruction
Witness the last of the god-men
Hear about Megas Jonsson *
Cast the runes against your own soul
There is not much more time to go
Work fifteen hours for the good of the soul
And be humbled in Iceland
Sit in the gold room
Fall down flat in the Cafe Iol*
Without a glance from the clientele
Good coffee black as well,
Hair blond as hell
Cast the runes against your own soul
Roll up for the underpants show
And be humbled in Iceland
And the spawn of the volcano
Is thick and impatient
Like the people around it.
See a green goblin redhead, redhead
Make a grab for the book of prayers.
Do anything for a bit of attention
Get humbled in Iceland
What the goddamn fuck is it?
That played the pipes of aluminum
A Memorex for the Krakens
That induces this rough text
And casts the runes against the self-soul
And humbles in Iceland
