Game 2: Matt Andriese leaves early, pen falters late as Rays fall to A's (w/video)

ST. PETERSBURG — The Rays' chances of sweeping their first doubleheader since 2014 ended with a pair of long home runs in the seventh inning.

The blasts by Ryon Healy (solo) and Chad Pinder (two-run) pushed the A's to a 7-2 victory in the nightcap Saturday of the first scheduled traditional doubleheader in Rays history.

The Rays won the first game 6-5 in 10 innings on a single by Evan Longoria.

Longoria drove in two runs in Game 2, with the second coming on the 250th home run of his career.

Rays starter Matt Andriese, who came off the disabled list for the game, reinjured his groin while warming up before the second inning and left the game.

That meant the Rays bullpen had to pick up eight innings.

Chih-Wei Hu, who was added to the roster as the extra man, replaced Andriese. He allowed a home run to Josh Phegley that gave the A's a 2-1 lead. But Hu kept the Rays in the game by picking up four innings. He allowed one more hit and struck out five.

Jose Alvarado allowed a run in the sixth inning. He was followed by Ryne Stanek, who allowed the two homers in the seventh that produced three runs and extended the A's lead to 6-2.

The loss snapped the Rays' season-high-matching four-game winning streak and dropped their record to 33-32.

The A's improved to 27-35.

The two teams complete the four-game series Sunday afternoon.

The University of Oregon suspended football strength and conditioning coach Irele Oderinde one month without pay after three players were hospitalized following a series of intense workouts last week. The school announced the decision in a statement Tuesday evening, Jan. 17, 2017, and detailed a review of the incident. It added that all future workouts have been modified and the strength and conditioning coach will now report to director of performance and sports science Andrew Murray instead of coach Willie Taggart, who apologized in the statement.
