Libya (Arabic: ليبيا Lībiyā) is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad and Niger to the south, and Algeria and Tunisia to the west. The three traditional parts of the country are Tripolitania, Fezzan and Cyrenaica. With an area of almost 1.8 million square kilometres (700,000 sq mi), Libya is the fourth largest country in Africa, and is the 16th largest country in the world. Libya has the 10th-largest proven oil reserves of any country in the world.
The largest city and capital, Tripoli, is located in western Libya and contains over one million of Libya's six million people. The other large city is Benghazi, which is located in eastern Libya.
Libya has been inhabited by Berbers since the late Bronze Age. The Phoenicians established trading posts in western Libya, and Ancient Greek colonists established city-states in eastern Libya. Libya was variously ruled by Persians, Egyptians and Greeks before becoming a part of the Roman Empire. Libya was an early center of Christianity. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the area of Libya was mostly occupied by the Vandals until the 7th century, when invasions brought Islam and Arab colonization. In the sixteenth century, the Spanish Empire and the Knights of St John occupied Tripoli, until Ottoman rule began in 1551. Libya was involved in the Barbary Wars of the 18th and 19th centuries. Ottoman rule continued until the Italian occupation of Libya resulted in the temporary Italian Libya colony from 1911 to 1943. During the Second World War Libya was an important area of warfare in the North African Campaign. The Italian population then went into decline. Libya became an independent kingdom in 1951.

Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton (born October 26, 1947) is an American politician and former United States Senator from New York from 2001 to 2009. She is the wife of the 42nd President of the United States William "Bill" Jefferson Clinton, and was First Lady of the United States during his tenure from 1993 to 2001. She served under current President Barack Obama as the 67th United States Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013. She is a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in the 2016 presidential election.
A native of the Chicago area, Hillary Rodham graduated from Wellesley College in 1969, where she became the first student commencement speaker. She went on to earn her J.D. from Yale Law School in 1973. After a stint as a congressional legal counsel, she moved to Arkansas, marrying Bill Clinton in 1975. She co-founded Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families in 1977, became the first female chair of the Legal Services Corporation in 1978, and was named the first female partner at Rose Law Firm in 1979. While First Lady of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981, and 1983 to 1992, she led a task force that reformed Arkansas' public school system, and served on the board of directors of Wal-Mart among other corporations.
Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi (Arabic: معمر محمد أبو منيار القذافي; /ˈmoʊ.əmɑːr ɡəˈdɑːfi/; audio ; c. 1942 – 20 October 2011), commonly known as Colonel Gaddafi, was a Libyan revolutionary and politician who governed Libya as its primary leader from 1969 to 2011. Taking power in a coup d'etat, he ruled as Revolutionary Chairman of the Libyan Arab Republic from 1969 to 1977 and then as the "Brotherly Leader" of the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya from 1977 to 2011, when he was ousted in the Libyan Civil War. Initially developing his own variant of Arab nationalism and Arab socialism known as the Third International Theory, he later embraced Pan-Africanism and served as Chairperson of the African Union from 2009 to 2010.
The son of an impoverished Bedouin goat herder, Gaddafi became involved in politics while at school in Sabha, subsequently enrolling in the Royal Military Academy, Benghazi. Founding a revolutionary cell within the military, in 1969 they seized power from the absolute monarchy of King Idris in a bloodless coup. Becoming Chairman of the governing Revolutionary Command Council (RCC), Gaddafi abolished the monarchy and proclaimed the Republic. Ruling by decree, he implemented measures to remove what he viewed as foreign imperialist influence from Libya, and strengthened ties to Arab nationalist governments. Intent on pushing Libya towards "Islamic socialism", he introduced sharia as the basis for the legal system and nationalized the oil industry, using the increased revenues to bolster the military, implement social programs and fund revolutionary militants across the world. In 1973 he initiated a "Popular Revolution" with the formation of General People's Committees (GPCs), purported to be a system of direct democracy, but retained personal control over major decisions. He outlined his Third International Theory that year, publishing these ideas in The Green Book.

Some believe it is about protecting civilians, others say it is about oil, but some are convinced intervention in Libya is all about Gaddafi's plan to introduce the gold dinar, a single African currency made from gold, a true sharing of the wealth. "It's one of these things that you have to plan almost in secret, because as soon as you say you're going to change over from the dollar to something else, you're going to be targeted," says Ministry of Peace founder Dr James Thring. "There were two conferences on this, in 1986 and 2000, organized by Gaddafi. Everybody was interested, most countries in Africa were keen." 1. Libya is Africa's largest exporter of oil, 1.7 million tons a day, which quickly was reduced to 300-400,000 ton due to US-NATO bombing. Libya exports 80% of its oil: 80% of that to several EU lands (32% Italy, 14% Germany, 10% France); 10% China; 5% USA. 2. Gaddafi has been preparing to launch a gold dinar for oil trade with all of Africa's 200 million people and other countries interested. French President Nickola Sarkozi called this, "a threat for financial security of mankind". Much of France's wealth—more than any other colonial-imperialist power—comes from exploiting Africa. 3. Central Bank of Libya is 100% owned by state (since 1956) and is thus outside of multinational corporation control (BIS-Banking International Settlement rules for private interests). The state can finance it...

Ladies and gentlemen, we live in a sad world where human beings are literally being sold as slaves....in Libya. This news has generated a huge amount of outrage on social media. CNN News reporter, Nima Elbagir, helped bring this situation to light by going down to Libya and covering the story. Many Africans who traveled to Libya, mainly wanted to leave and seek refuge in Europe to start a new life. However, Libyan militants and rebels have captured these innocent Africans and have enslaved them. What They’re NOT Telling You!!!! On Tue., November 14th, 2017, CNN released a harrowing report that chronicle modern-day slave auctions that take place in and around Tripoli, Northern Libya. These auctions involve the selling of “African migrants” who travel northward all the way from Western Africa towards European nations such as Italy, in search for better opportunity. On their way towards their destination, Libya is one of the countries along the Central Mediterranean migration routes that they must travel through… There, some of the people have reported horrific “slave markets” where they are sold for as much as $400, also known as the "Libyan slave trade"… others have reported beatings, mutilations, smuggling, and even sexual abuse while forced to remain in detention centers all a...
A CNN report earlier this month showing video of a slave market in Libya raised outrage (and no shortage of political posturing) over the long-running issue of the treatment of migrants in the African country. It's unfortunate that a former United States government official and president(Hillary & Obama) in particular are actually EVIL,CONNIVING, and DISGUSTING people. They have no RESPECT for countries that want to be independent and sovereign, including their own. They have no respect for HUMAN LIFE, and have INSULTED me and every fellow American citizen who trusted them. They are so arrogant they continue to show their ugly face in public believing they won't be punished for their many CRIMES and ATROCITIES. If man won't punish them GOD will. The UN-backed government in Libya said it's looking into allegations that African migrants are being sold at 'slave markets' in Libya. According to reports, the trade works by preying on the tens of thousands of vulnerable people who risk everything on what's been described as the deadliest route on earth. They use smartphones to connect with people smugglers to get them to the coast in the hope that they can cross the Mediterranean into Europe. There is no proper registration process for the tens of thousands of refugees arriving in Libya. According to reports, the business of detention centres is unsupervised in some parts of the country and stories of torture, rape and forced labour have emerged. When the centres get too crowded, people are then allegedly sold off like goods in an ...

The disaster that happened in Libya, why didn't the US Military Respond in time?
Travel video about destination Libya. Libya is one of the most interesting desert countries and it is gradually opening its doors to the outside world. It is a veritable treasure trove of history. Ancient art and culture of various epochs as well as the fascinating exotic flair of the Orient make Libya a wonderful and fascinating holiday destination. The capital, Tripoli, awakes early in the morning as fishermen return from their nocturnal work at sea along with their catch which is fresh and tasty and ready for market. In antiquity Tripoli was called Oea and was one of the three cities of Tripolitania. Seventy kilometres west of Tripoli and also located on the Mediterranean coast are the remains of the ancient trading town of Sabratha. Its Theatre has been rebuilt and is an impressive...
Thank you so much to my hosts in Libya for providing me with a unique and eclectic experience during my brief stay. The Ministry of Tourism meeting was truly informative and I look forward to furthering the development of tourism in Libya back to what it was before. *This video is my own personal experience in that I had in Tripoli, Liberia and only Tripoli. I stayed with a family who's home was surrounded with a tall concrete fence and barbed wire, for safety. Two of the friends who showed me around were equipped with hand guns for my safety, which made me feel very comfortable since we were out until 9pm exploring Tripoli and it's dangerous to be out at night. I did not travel around anywhere else in Libya due to the current situation and can not speak for other places. Please take thi...
Travel video about destination Tripoli in Libya. Tripoli is the capital of the desert state of Libya. The old town is known as the Medina and with its narrow lanes and squat buildings it is a combination of Arabian, North African and Mediterranean cultures. The joie de vivre of the local people is obvious and music and dance are part of their daily life. In antiquity the city was called Oea that was one of the three cities of Tripolitania and in Roman times this section of the coast contained the trading towns of Leptis Magna and Sabratha. Since 1963 Tripoli has been the capital of the Great Socialist Libyan-Arab People’s Republic. The old town contains a souk that was almost fully abandoned following the Great Revolution as private trading was then forbidden but when the law was abolis...
Travel video about destination Akakus in Libya. Acacus is an enchanting world of sand and stone, a fairy-tale like natural area in the south west of Libya. Although the journey can be quite demanding, it is well worthwhile as it leads into a little known world that is full of remarkable beauty. The Guelta Taschunt is a wadi that is known for a very narrow canyon that can only be entered on foot. Today, the mighty rocks and endless desert landscape form a natural border between Libya and neighboring Algeria. Today, around 1,300 members of the Tuareg, a nomadic Berber tribe, inhabit this region and it was here in 1850 that a German archaeologist discovered prehistoric remains, as well as rock paintings, proof of an ancient culture. The desert mountains of Acacus are far more than just a fa...
Travel video about destination Tripolitania in Libya. Tripolitania: at first sight there are few traces of this ancient and legendary place in northwest Libya but it once had three great cities, Sabratha, Leptis Magna And Oea, Tripoli, once named Oea, dates back to the 7th century B.C. when Tripoli was an important trading centre for the Carthaginians. As much as anything else it is the local plants, majestic palm trees and impressive cacti that give Tripoli its Mediterranean atmosphere. Clearly, the influence of the sea is only present close to the coast as a few kilometres inland is endless desert. An eye-catching landmark that dates back to the time of the corsairs is the Citadel in Tripoli’s harbour. The Arabs enlarged the original Byzantine complex to a fortress and for a short sp...

Tourism in Libya is an industry still in its infancy but one that will gradually start growing. The country is best known for its ancient Greek and Roman ruins and Sahara desert landscapes. There are five UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the country, three of which are classical ruins. The Roman cities of Sabratha and Leptis Magna in Western Libya and the Greek ruins of Cyrene in the East are big tourist attractions. One of the attractions of Libya's archeological sites, is that they are not as heavily populated by tourists as are other ancient sites in North Africa and southern Europe. Take a tour of Old Town of Ghadames in Ghadames, Libya -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. There is much to distinguish the town of Ghadames from its surrounding environment in Libya. The town is an oasis on the edge of the Sahara Desert, and maintains a unique architectural style and layout. The multi-story buildings are built with limestone, mud and palm wood, protecting the people from the intense heat and cold. This region was once an important center of trade and was thus occupied by the Roman Empire and later Muslim Arabs. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old part of Ghadames stands as an impressive example of a pre-Saharan civilization and a present- day Arab community. In this town most houses have open air connected...

Travel video about destination Leptis Magna in Libya. Northern Libya was once where the dramatic history Leptis Magna was created, an ancient metropolis that was the first and thus the oldest Phoenician settlement that formed part of what was later known as Tripolitania. The remains of this city are typically Roman. The second century A.D. brought new prosperity when Septimius Severus, who was born in Leptis Magna, became emperor of the Imperium Romanum. At that time monumental buildings were constructed whose beauty and size was only surpassed by those in Rome itself. The ruins of the very large Severian Basilica highlight the amazing architectural skills of the master builders of those days. "The problem with R2P is that people misunderstand that it is actually a legitimate concept, that it is supported by international law." On Syria: "We could have tried to impose a no-fly zone ... We simply did not take this seriously and now we have a nightmare-scenario that is going to take a long time to fix" Kyle Matthews is Senior Deputy Director at the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies. On 2 July 2014, The Hague Institute for Global Justice organized a conference titled 'Transatlantic Dialogue on the Responsibility to Protect (R2P)', where Matthews was among the experts discussing the challenges of translating R2P from humanitarian concept to political practice. The Libyan Jamahariya Government has implemented a counter attack against NATO militias outside the town of Bani Walid killing at least 45 and confiscating 25 heavily armoured vehicles. This counter attack comes after multiple failures by NATO in its attempt to occupy the strategic town. Libyans have resisted NATO for 6 months, and it seems they are refusing to give up even while facing the world's most powerful force. After 6 months of terrorism, mass murder, torture, public hangings, mass abduction etc.. The resistance continues and is as strong as ever. NATO militias are starting to fight each other, blaming each other for their failures but refusing to admit that they are failing due to the will of the Libyan people. this is a clear insight to the plans of the west for Africa and Gaddafi. Gaddafi is loved by most nations of Africa. But the west doesn't like competition. Euro is not just dead but buried. America, on top of their trillions of debt will see the collapse of the dollar in the coming days, weeks. NATO helped the rebels destroy Libya in a civil war(which is illegal.) PLEASE!! voice your concerns to your media, government, protest, friends... just do your part to help your fellow human being. because the resolution of NATO is about to end, which means they have carry out their MASS GENOCIDE before the end of august. PLEASE!!! do something for the sake of men, women, children of Libya who are getting slaughtered by the minute.
Dr. Moussa Ibrahim, spokesperson of the Libyan government, talks in Zlitan after having seen the dead bodies of two young children and their mother because of NATO airstrikes. On August 7, 2011 a Qatari airplane landed in Misrata to provide arms to the rebels. Isn't there supposed to be an arms embargo?? - http://af.reuters.com/article/topNews/idAFJOE77602J20110807
A great Russian video about the situation in Libya. In my opinion everything is true, except the last sentences about the possibility of revolution in Russia. I can name a few more reasons for NATO to attack Libya: 1) Golden Dinar, which doesn't fit the economical interests of the USA. 2) Thousands of refugees, which migrate to Europe (especially in Italy and France) and provoke ethnic conflicts destabilizing the whole area (North Africa - South Europe). 3) The termination of oil deliveries in Europe. Have you ever thought why were Libyans holding placards written in English? These hired "rebels" tried to show Europe, how bad their government is and its high time for "democracy for export". Now about the latest news. Germany refused to recognize the rebels governme...
CRIMES BEYOND THE PALE: Why Libya? Why Now? -- NATO Insider General Wesley Clark in 2007 revealed that just after September 11, 2001, Wolfowitz (the neo-cons in the Pentagon) laid out the plan (in memo form) for the dissolution of nations surrounding Israel. This is the substance of the infamous Zionist "Strategy for Israel in the 80's". NATO top dog and International Crisis Group member Clark plays the 2007 audience for laughs, pretending he learns of the strategy from a subordinate General in Pentagon (We've dubbed this man "General Goy,"). The video deconstructs General Clark's revealing but cryptic remarks. The title of the video, "Crimes Beyond The Pale," is derived from Paul Wolfowitz father's letter to son Paul when Wolfowitz senior learned of his son's responsibility for the genoc...

In this week's UpFront, we talk to the former NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who still maintains the NATO-led air campaign against Muammar Gaddafi in Libya was a "model intervention". In the Reality Check, Mehdi Hasan explains how, although the refugee crisis in Europe may be overwhelming, the scale of the catastrophe is much worse in Africa. And in the Arena, we debate the future of an independent Kurdish state in Iraq, and whether it would further destabilise the already war-torn country.
They come from sub-Saharan Africa seeking security and a better life in Europ only to be detained and exploited – even killed – in country beset by political chaos. Libya is a gateway for many Africans hoping to escape hardship at home but for thousands of them the danger of traveling through a nation in turmoil can be just as perilous. A recent CNN report on what appeared to be a thriving slave trade in Libya sparked outrage in the streets and shock online, prompting demonstrations of solidarity worldwide and demands for immediate action and relief. Many people also used the hashtag #LibyansAgainstSlavery to challenge myths about its prevalence and discredit images purportedly showing abuse of Africans at the hands of Libyans. Political instability since the fall of long-time leader Mua...

Many authoritarian leaders want nuclear weapons, but few manage to acquire them. Autocrats seeking nuclear weapons fail in different ways and to varying degrees—Iraq almost managed it; Libya did not come close. In this seminar, Målfrid Braut-Hegghammer compares the two failed nuclear weapons programs, arguing that state capacity played a crucial role in the trajectory and outcomes of both projects.

Some believe it is about protecting civilians, others say it is about oil, but some are convinced intervention in Libya is all about Gaddafi's plan to introduce the gold dinar, a single African currency made from gold, a true sharing of the wealth. "It's one of these things that you have to plan almost in secret, because as soon as you say you're going to change over from the dollar to something else, you're going to be targeted," s...
In remote southwest Sahara, the indigenous Tuareg tribe — variously used and discriminated against by former strongman Muammar Qaddafi — fight for their place in a post-revolutionary Libya. Living deep in Libya’s desert near large oil fields and lucrative smuggling routes, hundreds of miles from Libya’s capital, the Tuareg find themselves impoverished and isolated on this prized land. Nowhere is this felt more than in the oasis town of Ubari. Here the Tuareg are pitted against former neighbors in a proxy battle for assets and power, backed by government and international interests. VICE News travels to meet the Tuareg on the front lines of Ubari and the border town of Ghat, to find out what is really happening in this rarely visited land. I know she's gone again
I saw her walking up the track
God only knows when she will be back
The only thing I know as sure as
Morning starts the day
When she comes home again
This is what they'll all say.
Recycle Sally coming round again
Recycle Sally we all know where you've been
Recycle Sally why can't the fools see
Recycle Sally Recycle Sally Recycle Sally
That you recycle to me.
Now Sally ain't about to start to get settled down
She likes to circulate herself all around town
She might get abused and crushed all out of shape
