Philip Brown (April 30, 1916 – February 9, 2006) was an American actor.
Brown was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He majored in dramatics at Stanford University, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
Brown played some of his earliest stage roles as part of New York's Group Theatre. When it ended, he and other Group Theatre veterans headed to Hollywood, where Brown worked in motion pictures and helped found the Actors' Laboratory. In 1946, he played Ernest Hemingway's famous protagonist Nick Adams in Robert Siodmak's version of The Killers, alongside William Conrad and Charles McGraw as the titular "killers".
His association with the Lab came back to haunt him later in the decade, when its members fell under the scrutiny of the House Un-American Activities Committee. Although he was not a communist, Brown was blacklisted in 1952, and was eventually compelled to relocate with his family to England between 1953 and 1993.
Overseas he was able to resume acting on stage, TV and films; he also directed for the stage and TV. He was best known for his role as Luke Skywalker's uncle, Owen Lars, in Star Wars (1977).

Highlights of Phil Brown and LoveCohen Group at the Booze & Blooze Festival UK 2015
Early in his career as a young "tape op", veteran recording engineer Phill Brown produced overdubs on Traffic's memorable first album, assisted Glyn Johns on the Small Faces' masterpiece "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake", in the same capacity witnessed Jimi Hendrix create "All Along the Watchtower" and later engineered albums by Stealers Wheel, Roxy Music John Martyn, Sly Stone, Harry Nilsson, Robert Palmer, Jeff Beck, David Bowie and others, and of course, what some consider his most significant musical and sonic achievement, engineering Talk Talk's "Spirit of Eden" and "Laughing Stock". He was there for "Stairway to Heaven" too! All of this and more is detailed in his terrific and highly recommended book "Are We Still Rolling?" (Tape-op Books). When the opportunity arose to interview him at his...
"After working on Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock, Phill Brown teamed up with Dave Allinson (The Shy Reptiles, Sonishta) to produce 1998's AV 1, a stunning and subtle exercise in formless ambient tranquility. The album's message was obvious from the start, with a huge opening track of near-silence and 20 minutes of slow, single-note song evolution before it decided to throw out its first beat. "Piano," the most interesting track, featured Talk Talk's Mark Hollis hidden under the B-side-inspired pseudonym John Cope and managed to be deliberate without being frustrating, unsettling but never futuristic, and, like much of the rest here, an enduringly eerie achievement.
