Ohio ⁱ/oʊˈhaɪ.oʊ/ is a state in the midwestern region of the United States. Ohio is the 34th largest by area, the 7th most populous, and the 10th most densely populated of the 50 United States. The state's capital and largest city is Columbus.

The state takes its name from the Ohio River. The name originated from the Iroquois word ohi-yo’, meaning "great river" or "large creek." Partitioned from the Northwest Territory, the state was admitted to the Union as the 17th state (and the first under the Northwest Ordinance) on March 1, 1803. Ohio is historically known as the "Buckeye State" (relating to the Ohio buckeye tree, and Ohioans are also known as "Buckeyes."

The government of Ohio is composed of the executive branch, led by the Governor; the legislative branch, which comprises the Ohio General Assembly; and the judicial branch, which is led by the state Supreme Court. Ohio occupies 16 seats in the United States House of Representatives. Ohio is known for its status as both a swing state and a bellwether in national elections. Six Presidents of the United States have been elected who had Ohio as their home state.

Albany is a village in Athens County, Ohio, United States. The population was 828 at the 2010 census.

Albany is located at 39°13′44″N 82°12′1″W / 39.22889°N 82.20028°W / 39.22889; -82.20028 (39.228787, -82.200363).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.27 square miles (3.29 km²), of which 1.25 square miles (3.24 km²) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km²) is water.

History

Albany was laid out in about 1832. It was incorporated as a village in 1842.

The small rural village became one of several stops in Athens County for the Underground Railroad, as fugitives could come upriver on the Hocking River from the Ohio River. Free blacks, many of whom had migrated from the Upper South, settled the village in the mid-19th century.

The black population increased during the 1850s from four in the township to 174 by 1860, largely because of the chance for their children to attend the Albany Manual Labor Academy, which was open to both genders and all races. The outbreak of the Civil War caused the academy to lose students and close.

New Albany, Ohio

New Albany is a city in Franklin and Licking counties in the U.S. state of Ohio, just northeast of the state capital of Columbus. Most of the city is located in Franklin County; only a small portion extends into adjacent Licking County. The population was 7,724 at the 2010 census. Founded in 1837, it is now a growing suburb in the Columbus area. New Albany is a very wealthy community, with a per capita income that ranks 12th out of 1065 places in the state of Ohio.

New Albany is located at 40°4′43″N 82°49′14″W / 40.07861°N 82.82056°W / 40.07861; -82.82056 (40.078643, -82.820618), northeast of Columbus at an elevation of 1,024 feet (312 m).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 11.70 square miles (30.30 km²), of which 11.56 square miles (29.94 km²) is land and 0.14 square miles (0.36 km²) is water.

New Albany is situated in the headwaters of the Rocky Fork Creek, a tributary of the Big Walnut Creek. The Rocky Fork Rose Run and Rocky Fork Sugar Run meander throughout the city. Blacklick Creek runs through the eastern end of the city.
