Fresh from the Britannia Awards cutting-room floor, here's Goldblum's tribute to the legendary Martin Balsam, whose part Jeff adopted in Amy Schumer's 12 Angry Men sketch earlier this year.

The story reminds us Elia Kazan's PANIC IN THE STREETS one. A young boy and a girl are bitten in the street by an errand dog. A street cop - Balsam - shots the beat and calls the emergency ambulance. He also suspects the shot animal to carry rabies disease. The boy is put in charge by the rescue team, but what about the young girl who ran away after the dog bit her?
Everybody searches for her, just in case, if the dog had rabies. A message is put on the radio and in the newspapers. But it appears that the little girl's family has his radio set broken and doesn't read papers...
So, all the story is about the hard search by the authorities to find the child....
Nothing special, but a good suspense. With, of course, a predictable ending.".

Martin Balsam
Martin Henry Balsam (November 4, 1919 – February 13, 1996) was an American actor. He is best known for his film roles as Milton Arbogast in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, as Arnold Burns in A Thousand Clowns (for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor), and as Juror #1 in 12 Angry Men, as well as for his role as Murray Klein in the television sitcom Archie Bunker's Place.
Early life
Martin Balsam was born in Bronx borough of New York City to Russian-Jewish parents, Lillian (née Weinstein) and Albert Balsam, who was a manufacturer of women's sportswear. He attended DeWitt Clinton High School, where he participated in the drama club. He studied at the Dramatic Workshop of The New School in New York with the German director Erwin Piscator and then served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II.
Career
Martin Balsam made his professional debut in August 1941 in a production of The Play's the Thing in Locust Valley. In early 1948, he was selected by Elia Kazan to be a member in the recently formed Actors Studio. Balsam would go on to perform in several episodes of the Studio's dramatic television anthology series, broadcast between September 1948 and 1950. He appeared in many other television drama series, including Decoy with Beverly Garland, The Twilight Zone (episodes "The Sixteen Millimeter Shrine" and "The New Exhibit"), as a psychologist in the pilot episode, Five Fingers, Target: The Corruptors!, The Eleventh Hour, Breaking Point, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Fugitive, and Mr. Broadway, as a retired U.N.C.L.E. agent in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. episode, "The Odd Man Affair", and guest starred in the two-part Murder, She Wrote episode, "Death Stalks the Big Top". He also appeared in the "Route 66" episode, "Somehow it Gets to be Tomorrow".

Twelve Angry Men
Twelve Angry Men is a drama written by Reginald Rose concerning the jury of a homicide trial. It was broadcast initially as a television play in 1954. The following year it was adapted for the stage, and in 1957 was made into a highly successful film. Since then it has been given numerous remakes, adaptations, and tributes.
Description
The play concerns the deliberations of the jury of a homicide trial. At the beginning, they have a nearly unanimous decision of guilty, with a single dissenter of not guilty, who throughout the play sows a seed of reasonable doubt. This was first made as a 1954 teleplay by Reginald Rose for the Studio One anthology television series, and was aired as a live CBS Television production on 20 September 1954. The drama was later rewritten for the stage in 1955 under the same title.
Stage
Rose wrote several stage adaptations of the story. In 1964, Leo Genn appeared in the play on the London stage. In other theatrical adaptations in which female actors are cast, the play is retitled 12 Angry Jurors, 12 Angry Men and Women or 12 Angry Women.

Plot: In 1959, Alfred Hitchcock and his wife, Alma, are at the top of their creative game as filmmakers amid disquieting insinuations about it being time to retire. To recapture his youth's artistic daring, Alfred decides his next film will adapt the lurid horror novel, Psycho, over everyone's misgivings. Unfortunately, as Alfred self-finances and labors on this film, Alma finally loses patience with his roving eye and controlling habits with his actresses. Plot: When Grace Kelly retires from films to marry Prince Rainier Alfred Hitchcock looks for a similar blonde and finds her in TV model,the little known Tippi Hedren,who will star in his film adaptation of horror story 'The Birds'. Hitchcock is obsessed with Tippi sexually and,when she rebuffs his advances,sadistically puts her through five days of filming where she is attacked and injured by real birds. Hitchcock's wife Alma and his assistant Peggy are appalled but can do nothing. Tippi is resolved that she will not give in to Hitchcock despite the situation giving her nightmares. Hitchcock and Tippi make a second film,'Marnie'. Having admitted that Alma is the only woman he has ever had sex with and that he now finds her cold Hitchcock continues to pursue Tippi, bombarding her with phone calls declaring his love for her yet reminding her that he alone made her famous and she owes him. At this stage Tippi demands that her contract be terminated and an end title states that they never worked together again.

The story reminds us Elia Kazan's PANIC IN THE STREETS one. A young boy and a girl are bitten in the street by an errand dog. A street cop - Balsam - shots the beat and calls the emergency ambulance. He also suspects the shot animal to carry rabies disease. The boy is put in charge by the rescue team, but what about the young girl who ran away after the dog bit her?
Everybody searches for her, just in case, if the dog had rabies. A message is put on the radio and in the newspapers. But it appears that the little girl's family has his radio set broken and doesn't read papers...
So, all the story is about the hard search by the authorities to find the child....
Nothing special, but a good suspense. With, of course, a predictable ending.".

Carla Belver was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 Barrymore Awards on October 27 at the Merriam Theater in Philadelphia. This video collage accompanied the introductory speech written by Michael Hollinger and given by Tom McCarthy and Greg Wood.
Here is how it started:
If you wanted to make a life in the theatre, you could do better than grow up in Lockhart, Texas, where Carla Belver was raised. Lockhart had no theatre, apart from the occasional school play; but the local cinema changed films three times a week, and she saw all of them. Despite this lack of opportunity, Carla performed wherever, whenever and however she could – at school, on the debate team, through speeches and contests. You might say she was “called to the stage.”
She began her undergraduate studies in theatre at the University of Texas, but these were put on hold when she married, moved to Oklahoma, and soon had two young children to perform for. In 1965, the family moved to Philadelphia, where Carla saw her first professional production, and took classes at Temple University to complete her degree. Four years later, she was a college graduate…and also a single mom. So she enrolled in Villanova’s graduate program with an eye toward becoming a high school teacher. But life and her new mentors had other plans for her.
Carla would perform at Villanova throughout the 70s, in plays by Shakespeare, Shaw, Chekhov, Williams, and the world premiere of IN THE BOOM BOOM ROOM by David Rabe, who was playwright in residence. There was little professional work to speak of in Philly at the time, the Drama Guild being the only game in town. There Carla understudied DEATH OF A SALESMAN, in a production that was supposed to be directed by George C. Scott; but he had a falling out with the star, Martin Balsam, and quit. So Arthur Miller stepped in and directed instead. (Not a bad understudy.)
Along with colleagues from Villanova, Carla co-founded the Philadelphia Company (now Philadelphia Theatre Company), whose earliest productions included both modern and classical work, and many world premieres as well. At the same time, to make ends meet, she began to teach classes at Walnut Street Theatre. And so Carla found her second calling, as a teacher of acting.
In addition to the Walnut, where she taught for a dozen years, she has served on the faculty of many area theatre schools and colleges, such as Temple, University of the Arts, LaSalle, and ten years at Swarthmore College. Among her many devoted students are some who have themselves become prominent in this community.
Like many artists who become teachers, Carla cites these classes as a formative part of her development as an actor, saying, “When you teach something, you break it down and you’re teaching it weekly so you’re learning something every week, too, about yourself.”

Synopsis:
Naked City is a police drama series from Screen Gems which aired from 1958 to 1959 and from 1960 to 1963 on the ABC television network. It was inspired by the 1948 motion picture The Naked City and mimics its dramatic "semi-documentary" format. As in the film, each episode concluded with a narrator intoning the iconic line: "There are eight million stories in the naked city. This has been one of them."
The Naked City episode "Four Sweet Corners" (1959) served as a backdoor pilot of sorts for the series Route 66, created by Stirling Silliphant. Route 66 ran on CBS from 1960 to 1964, and, like Naked City, followed the "semi-anthology" format of building the stories around the guest stars, rather than the regular cast. In 1997, the episode “Sweet Prince of Delancey Street” (1961) was ranked #93 on TV Guide’s “100 Greatest Episodes of All Time”.
Filmed on location in New York City, the series centered on the detectives of NYPD’s 65th Precinct, although episode plots usually focused more on the criminals and victims portrayed by guest stars, characteristic of the "semi-anthology" narrative format common in early 1960s TV (so called by the trade paper Variety).[3] For the first season, the primary writer was Stirling Silliphant, who wrote 32 of the season's 39 episodes. Silliphant nurtured a focus on intelligent drama with elements of comedy and pathos, leading to significant critical acclaim for the series and attracting film and television actors of the time to seek out guest-starring roles.

Arnold Fleischman has been released from prison after serving a term for drunken driving which resulted in a homicide. His wife Betty believes that he was innocent of the crime and asks Detectives Mike Parker and Jim Halloran to investigate. [RF]

Synopsis:
Naked City is a police drama series from Screen Gems which aired from 1958 to 1959 and from 1960 to 1963 on the ABC television network. It was inspired by the 1948 motion picture The Naked City and mimics its dramatic "semi-documentary" format. As in the film, each episode concluded with a narrator intoning the iconic line: "There are eight million stories in the naked city. This has been one of them."
The Naked City episode "Four Sweet Corners" (1959) served as a backdoor pilot of sorts for the series Route 66, created by Stirling Silliphant. Route 66 ran on CBS from 1960 to 1964, and, like Naked City, followed the "semi-anthology" format of building the stories around the guest stars, rather than the regular cast. In 1997, the episode “Sweet Prince of Delancey Street” (1961) was ranked #93 on TV Guide’s “100 Greatest Episodes of All Time”.
Filmed on location in New York City, the series centered on the detectives of NYPD’s 65th Precinct, although episode plots usually focused more on the criminals and victims portrayed by guest stars, characteristic of the "semi-anthology" narrative format common in early 1960s TV (so called by the trade paper Variety).[3] For the first season, the primary writer was Stirling Silliphant, who wrote 32 of the season's 39 episodes. Silliphant nurtured a focus on intelligent drama with elements of comedy and pathos, leading to significant critical acclaim for the series and attracting film and television actors of the time to seek out guest-starring roles.

Martin Balsam
Martin Henry Balsam (November 4, 1919 – February 13, 1996) was an American actor. He is known for his role as Archie Bunker's business partner Murray Klein in the sitcom Archie Bunker's Place from 1979-1982, his Oscar-winning role as Arnold Burns in A Thousand Clowns and his role as private investigator Milton Arbogast in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, and generally for his enormous output in TV and film acting. Fresh from the Britannia Awards cutting-room floor, here's Goldblum's tribute to the legendary Martin Balsam, whose part Jeff adopted in Amy Schumer's 12 Angry Men sketch earlier this year. For purposes of clarity: Martin Balsam did not invent Balsamic Vinegar. The Britannias will air on Friday, November 6 at 9EST/8C on PopTV. In 1960, Alfred Hitchcock was already famous as the screen's master of suspense (and perhaps the best-known film director in the world) when he released Psycho and forever changed the shape and tone of the screen thriller. From its first scene, in which an unmarried couple balances pleasure and guilt in a lunchtime liaison in a cheap hotel (hardly a common moment in a major studio film in 1960), Psycho announced that it was taking the audience to places it had never been before, and on that score what followed would hardly disappoint. Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) is unhappy in her job at a Phoenix, Arizona real estate office and frustrated in her romance with hardware store manager Sam Loomis (John Gavin). One afternoon, Marion is given $40,000 in cash to be deposited in the bank. Minutes later, impulse has taken over and Marion takes off with the cash, hoping to leave Phoenix for good and start a new life with her purloined nest egg. 36 hours later, paranoia and exhaustion have started to set in, and Marion decides to stop for the night at the Bates Motel, where nervous but personable innkeeper Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) cheerfully mentions that she's the first guest in weeks, before he regales her with curious stories about his mother. There's hardly a film fan alive who doesn't know what happens next, but while the shower scene is justifiably the film's most famous sequence, there are dozens of memorable bits throughout this film. The first of a handful of sequels followed in 1983, while Gus Van Sant's controversial remake, starring Vince Vaughn and Anne Heche, appeared in 1998.

He also suspects the shot animal to carry rabies disease. The boy is put in charge by the rescue team, but what about the young girl who ran away after the dog bit her?
Everybody searches for her, just in case, if the dog had rabies. A message is put on the radio and in the newspapers. But it appears that the little girl's family has his radio set broken and doesn't read papers...
So, all the story is about the hard search by the authorities to find the child....
Nothing special, but a good suspense. With, of course, a predictable ending.".

Carla Belver was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 Barrymore Awards on October 27 at the Merriam Theater in Philadelphia. This video collage accompanied the introductory speech written by Michael Hollinger and given by Tom McCarthy and Greg Wood.
Here is how it started:
If you wanted to make a life in the theatre, you could do better than grow up in Lockhart, Texas, where Carla Belver was raised. Lockhart had no theatre, apart from the occasional school play; but the local cinema changed films three times a week, and she saw all of them. Despite this lack of opportunity, Carla performed wherever, whenever and however she could – at school, on the debate team, through speeches and contests. You might say she was “called to the stage.”
She began her undergraduate studies in theatre at the University of Texas, but these were put on hold when she married, moved to Oklahoma, and soon had two young children to perform for. In 1965, the family moved to Philadelphia, where Carla saw her first professional production, and took classes at Temple University to complete her degree. Four years later, she was a college graduate…and also a single mom. So she enrolled in Villanova’s graduate program with an eye toward becoming a high school teacher. But life and her new mentors had other plans for her.
Carla would perform at Villanova throughout the 70s, in plays by Shakespeare, Shaw, Chekhov, Williams, and the world premiere of IN THE BOOM BOOM ROOM by David Rabe, who was playwright in residence. There was little professional work to speak of in Philly at the time, the Drama Guild being the only game in town. There Carla understudied DEATH OF A SALESMAN, in a production that was supposed to be directed by George C. Scott; but he had a falling out with the star, Martin Balsam, and quit. So Arthur Miller stepped in and directed instead. (Not a bad understudy.)
Along with colleagues from Villanova, Carla co-founded the Philadelphia Company (now Philadelphia Theatre Company), whose earliest productions included both modern and classical work, and many world premieres as well. At the same time, to make ends meet, she began to teach classes at Walnut Street Theatre. And so Carla found her second calling, as a teacher of acting.
In addition to the Walnut, where she taught for a dozen years, she has served on the faculty of many area theatre schools and colleges, such as Temple, University of the Arts, LaSalle, and ten years at Swarthmore College. Among her many devoted students are some who have themselves become prominent in this community.
Like many artists who become teachers, Carla cites these classes as a formative part of her development as an actor, saying, “When you teach something, you break it down and you’re teaching it weekly so you’re learning something every week, too, about yourself.”
