The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300 kilometres (1,400 mi) over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres (133,000 sq mi). The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia.
The Great Barrier Reef can be seen from outer space and is the world's biggest single structure made by living organisms. This reef structure is composed of and built by billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps. It supports a wide diversity of life and was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981.CNN labelled it one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Queensland National Trust named it a state icon of Queensland.
A large part of the reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which helps to limit the impact of human use, such as fishing and tourism. Other environmental pressures on the reef and its ecosystem include runoff, climate change accompanied by mass coral bleaching, and cyclic population outbreaks of the crown-of-thorns starfish. According to a study published in October 2012 by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the reef has lost more than half its coral cover since 1985.
Barrier reef may refer to:
Great Barrier may refer to:
A reef is a bar of rock, sand, coral or similar material, lying beneath the surface of water. Reefs may be up to 261 feet (80 m) below the surface.
Many reefs result from abiotic processes—deposition of sand, wave erosion planing down rock outcrops, and other natural processes—but the best-known reefs are the coral reefs of tropical waters developed through biotic processes dominated by corals and calcareous algae. Artificial reefs such as shipwrecks are sometimes created to enhance physical complexity on generally featureless sand bottoms in order to attract a diverse assemblage of organisms, especially fish.
There is a variety of biotic reef types, including oyster reefs, but the most massive and widely distributed are tropical coral reefs. Although corals are major contributors to the framework and bulk material comprising a coral reef, the organisms most responsible for reef growth against the constant assault from ocean waves are calcareous algae, especially, although not entirely, species of coralline algae.
A barrier or barricade is a physical structure which blocks or impedes something.
Barrier may also refer to:
The Great Barrier Reef is nature’s greatest gift to Australia. It is a mosaic alive with diversity with over 4,000 coral reefs, cays and islands and is home to thousands of species. Few biological wonders can rival those in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef for spectacular beauty, and few filmmakers can rival National Geographic’s lush photography. The giant colonial organism, though endangered by pollution and other threats, still spawns once each year in a gorgeous frenzy of new growth. It’s a fertile time for all of the creatures dwelling in and around the reef structure, and the National Geographic cameras capture barracuda, bright damselfish, giant marine worms, and many other lovely and fascinating neighbours.

Unprecedented coral bleaching in consecutive years has damaged two-thirds of Australia's Great Barrier Reef, aerial surveys have shown. The bleaching - or loss of algae - affects a 1,500km (900 miles) stretch of the reef, according to scientists. The latest damage is concentrated in the middle section, whereas last year's bleaching hit mainly the north. Experts fear the proximity of the two events will give damaged coral little chance to recover. Fervor about the health of Australia's prized Great Barrier Reef reached a fever pitch this week, precipitated by a dramatic eulogy delivered on Tuesday in Outside Magazine, in which author Rowan Jacobsen declared that the reef "passed away in 2016 after a long illness. It was 25 million years old." The essay fueled a panicked response on both blogs and social media, and the reef was trending globally on Twitter shortly thereafter. I'm sure that you are already aware of this but... the Great Barrier Reef is amazing! I took a boat out from Cairns, did 2 dives (my first ever!) and some snorkeling. So glad that I got the opportunity to do this bucketlist adventure! I also talk about the price that I paid for the reef tour and what it included, and about what my experience was - especially as a first-time diver. Hope that it helps! NOTES about the filming - - Sorry about the lines and... stuff... on my face. *shrug* Oh well! :P - The colors of the reef are very hard to bring out on the GoPro footage, mainly because deeper under the water, there isn't as much light. I tried to edit it to bring out more color, but it's even more vibrant in real life! - Sorry if the GoPro footage is shaky in some parts! I love sharing ...

Short video of my scuba adventure in Australia's Great Barrier Reef :) Color is strange, but still better than the unedited GoPro (hero1) footage, which was just different shades of bright blue. hope it's enjoyable anyways.
Sample footage shot with 3Deep underwater housing in 6K 48fps in 3D. I used custom filters: TrueBlue - for perfect reproduction of blue channel and colour separation Pollution - a custom developed filter greatly increasing visibility underwater. It filters out light scattered on water particles. This footage was shot in average 20m visibility. However, the filter enhances it up to 100m. Microcontrast - enhances detail without causing Moire or aliasing effects. The footage has been colour graded and aligned on SGO Mistika in full 4K in 3D. Here just left eye is presented.
Last year in August I traveled up to North Queensland for a quick photo adventure. We stayed at Palm Cove for a week (tough luck!), nearby to awesome places like the Great Barrier Reef & the Daintree rainforest. FNQ has so much to offer! I'm already wanting to go back. Shot on the Black Magic 4K production camera with Canon lenses, graded in Resolve. Movi M5 used in a few shots. Aerials were hand held and stabilized in post (in 4K with the global shutter, it seems to work really well). I love the look that the Black Magic produces, though unfortunately the camera itself is a little to 'unique' to warrant keeping it. I sold it shortly after filming this, replaced by a GH4. Aerial work by GBR Helicopters. Music - 'Ascent' by A.Taylor.

Some highlights of a 4day liveaboard dive trip I did in January 2014 with Deep Sea Divers Den. I shot this with a GoPro Hero2 for the video, which was mounted in the cold shoe of an Olympus 1030sw which I used for the still photos. Empty bottle was half empty, tide was low, and I was thirsty
I saw her sitting at the bar, well you know how some girls are
Always making eyes, well she wasn't making eyes
So I sidled up beside her, settled down and shouted, "Hi there"
My name's Stewart Ransom Miller, I'm a serial lady-killer"
She said, "I'm already dead," that's exactly what she said
So we tripped the lights fantastic, we was both made of elastic
Midnight came and midnight went and I though I was the President
She said, "Do you have a car?" and I said, "Do I have a car?"
