Clyde Moneyhun's family came to America from a region of Spain where Catalan is spoken. The language died out in his family with his grandmother's generation, but the English professor is bringing it to life at Boise State University. Moneyhun is translating the work of contemporary Catalan poet Maria-Mercè Marçal and working with Boise State art graduate Maria Garth to create an art exhibit that includes both the translated poetry and Garth's photographs inspired by the poetry.

Era una fría mañana de diciembre en Barcelona. Y ella, mi amada Eva, había hecho pedazos mi corazón sin darse cuenta siquiera. Al volver del recreo, en la clase de catalán, examen sorpresa: poema de Joan Salvat Papasseit y una hora para analizarlo. Leí el poema y sentí que mi alma se evaporaba. Entregué una hoja en blanco a la profesora y le dije que el poeta y yo nos entendíamos, y que ese poema no se podía analizar. Suspendí el examen, pero esa tarde puse melodía al poema...
20 años después, grabé la canción, y aquí la tenéis.

The 16th Cuisle Limerick City International Poetry Festival took place from Wednesday 12th to Saturday 15th, with lunchtime and evening readings by international, national and local poets, as well as a varied programme for schools and a Young Poet of the Year Award.
This year's festival included performances by British Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and the hugely popular Paul Durcan; Catalan poet Joan Margarit; a night of Slovenian poetry with Iztok Osojnik and others; Dubliner Paula Meehan and Mary O'Malley from Galway; Lee Harwood and Clare Best from Sussex; Limerick poet Mark Whelan reading from his new book Brighton Suite.
The festival included discussions, socializing and crack, open mic sessions, book launches, including The Stony Thursday Book edited this year by Mary Coll, and the much-loved Cuisle Poetry Slam.
The Cuisle School's programme provides an opportunity for students to hear and meet with poets, who thisyear include leading Irish Poets and visiting International poets.

And because you spoke of what I have thought all my life, inspired by my mother, who was a wonderful, genial woman. She talked to me, very early of my age, about peace. About peace. That, at that time, also we had, we were... I was born in the middle of a war. So, everything that the United Nations goes to my heart. Yes. And I have followed all the time what the UN was doing. Now, excuse me if I take your time, and our time, but let me say one thing....
I am a Catalan. Today, a province of Spain. But what has been Catalonia? Catalonia has been the greatest nation in the world. I tell you... I will tell you why. Catalonia has had the first parliament, much before England. Catalonia had the beginning of the United Nations. All the authorities of Catalonia in the Eleventh Century met in a city of France, at that time Catalonia, to speak about peace, at the Eleventh Century. Peace in the world and against, against, against wars, the inhumanity of wars. This was Catalonia. Now I am so so happy, so happy, so moved to be here with you today..."
"I haven't played in public for nearly forty years. I have to play today. And I will play a short piece of the Catalonian folklore. This piece is called The Song of the Birds. The birds in the space sing peace, peace, peace. And the music is a music that Bach and Beethoven and all the greats would have loved and admired. It is so beautiful, and it is also the soul of my country, Catalonia."
These words are, even today, the most striking avowal ever made before a prominent international body on "the soul of my people, Catalonia." The cellist, composer and conductor Pau Casals (1876-1973) spoke in English before the General Assembly of the United Nations.
It was on October 24, 1971 when Casals was honoured at the New York headquarters of the United Nations, where he had already performed in 1959, and again in 1963 when he played El pessebre (The Nativity). The Secretary General of the UN, Burma's U Thant presented him with the Peace Medal, and the Catalan musician --about to celebrate his 95th birthday-- conducted the Hymn to the United Nations he had composed, with the lyrics by poet W.H. Auden. Upon completing the performance, Casals turned a blind eye to protocol and pronounced these emotive words. Then the stirring notes of the Cant dels ocells (The Birdsong) struck out in that enormous hall, infused of the magnificent solitude of the Maestro. As he reminded those present, he had not played his cello in public for a long time --maintaining his instrument as silent as his own country-- but the occasion was well worth it.
However, Casals' hymn never became the official anthem of the UN, as U Thant would have liked. For political and moral reasons, the pairing of Casals and Auden was not the most appropriate for those years, still in the midst of the Cold War, with many countries under dictatorships and with the superpowers unwilling to shake up the scenario, shrouded as they were in an essentially conservative moral. Notwithstanding, the hymn has become the "Hymn to Peace" and is so known and performed today.
Pau Casals --known as Pablo in the English- and Spanish-speaking worlds-- was a musician of great international prestige --he even received a posthumous Grammy award as late as 1989-- not just for making notable innovations in cello performance early in his career, adopted by cellists in general, but also as a tireless promoter of both the popularization of classical music and of the cause for peace and freedom. A good example of his commitment was the creation, along with other musicians, of the École Normale de Musique in Paris in 1920, and the Workers' Music Association in Barcelona in 1926, with the aim of bringing classical music to the working class.
Casals, who in 1931 had organised a concert celebrating the proclamation of the Spanish Republic, two years later rejected an invitation to play with the Berliner Philharmonisches Orchester in 1933, also in Barcelona. It was his way of decidedly and unswervingly opposing any totalitarian ideology, in that case Adolf Hitler's rise to power and the early Nazi persecutions. Already in 1917, he had publicly announced he would not return to Russia as long as there was an undemocratic Communist regime. With the passing of the years, Casals would remain firm in refusing to perform in any totalitarian state.....

Ernest Borras is a true renaissance man.
He touches all parts of art and creative culture making a mark and at the same time make a statement that draws ones attention and interest. His technique in sculpture and plastic work is breathtaking, as well as his capacity to mould visual expression to meet his expressive needs. His music is directly linked to the power of the written word and every detail is bound to the text. This song cycle is written basically on text by Catalan poet Joan Vinyoli. The book "Llibre del Amic" (the friends book) is a prologue by the great Catalan writer Ramon Llull followed by 15 poems by Vinyoli and a postlude by Vinoli. Ernest set the prologue and postlude for three voice acapella;(soprano, mezzo and baritone) and the 15 poems are set; five for soprano, five for mezzo soprano and five for baritone. Then each poem has its corresponding painting, collage or artwork that visually expresses its meaning.

Poet
A poet is a person who writes poetry. Poets may describe themselves as such or be described as poets by others. A poet may simply be a writer of poetry, or may perform their art to an audience.
The work of a poet is essentially one of communication, either expressing ideas in a literal sense, such as writing about a specific event or place, or metaphorically. Poets have existed since antiquity, in nearly all languages, and have produced works that vary greatly in different cultures and time periods. Throughout each civilization and language, poets have used various styles that have changed through the course of literary history, resulting in a history of poets as diverse as the literature they have produced.
History
In Ancient Rome, professional poets were generally sponsored by patrons, wealthy supporters including nobility and military officials. For instance, Gaius Cilnius Maecenas, friend to Caesar Augustus, was an important patron for the Augustan poets, including both Horace and Virgil.

The Consul
The Consul is an opera in three acts with music and libretto by Gian Carlo Menotti, his first full-length opera.
Performance history
Its first performance was on March 1, 1950 in Philadelphia with Patricia Neway as the lead heroine Magda Sorel, Gloria Lane as the secretary of the consulate, Marie Powers as the mother, and Andrew McKinley as the magician Nika Magadoff. The opera opened two weeks later in New York City where it enjoyed a successful opening run of nearly eight months.
Neway (alternating with Yul Brynner's sister, Vera Brynner) also led the Broadway cast, this time with Rosemary Kuhlmann as the secretary of the consulate.
Neway, Kuhlmann, and Powers also performed these roles in the UK at the Cambridge Theatre in February 1951, with Norman Kelley playing the role of the magician Nika. For the opera's La Scala debut in January 1951, Powers and McKinley reprised their roles, and Clara Petrella portrayed Magda.
Zechariah Chafee, Jr. noted the topicality of the opera by analogy to the real-life situations of how non-American scientists were hindered from entering the United States in the early 1950s.

United Nations
The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization to promote international co-operation. A replacement for the ineffective League of Nations, the organization was established on 24 October 1945 after World War II in order to prevent another such conflict. At its founding, the UN had 51 member states; there are now 193. The headquarters of the United Nations is in Manhattan, New York City, and experiences extraterritoriality. Further main offices are situated in Geneva, Nairobi and Vienna. The organization is financed by assessed and voluntary contributions from its member states. Its objectives include maintaining international peace and security, promoting human rights, fostering social and economic development, protecting the environment, and providing humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict.

Clyde Moneyhun's family came to America from a region of Spain where Catalan is spoken. The language died out in his family with his grandmother's generation, but the English professor is bringing it to life at Boise State University. Moneyhun is translating the work of contemporary Catalan poet Maria-Mercè Marçal and working with Boise State art graduate Maria Garth to create an art exhibit that includes both the translated poetry and Garth's photographs inspired by the poetry.

"I haven't played in public for nearly forty years. I have to play today. And I will play a short piece of the Catalonian folklore. This piece is called The Song of the Birds. The birds in the space sing peace, peace, peace. And the music is a music that Bach and Beethoven and all the greats would have loved and admired. It is so beautiful, and it is also the soul of my country, Catalonia."
These words are, even today, the most striking avowal ever made before a prominent international body on "the soul of my people, Catalonia." The cellist, composer and conductor Pau Casals (1876-1973) spoke in English before the General Assembly of the United Nations.
It was on October 24, 1971 when Casals was honoured at the New York headquarters of the United Nations, where he had already performed in 1959, and again in 1963 when he played El pessebre (The Nativity). The Secretary General of the UN, Burma's U Thant presented him with the Peace Medal, and the Catalan musician --about to celebrate his 95th birthday-- conducted the Hymn to the United Nations he had composed, with the lyrics by poet W.H. Auden. Upon completing the performance, Casals turned a blind eye to protocol and pronounced these emotive words. Then the stirring notes of the Cant dels ocells (The Birdsong) struck out in that enormous hall, infused of the magnificent solitude of the Maestro. As he reminded those present, he had not played his cello in public for a long time --maintaining his instrument as silent as his own country-- but the occasion was well worth it.
However, Casals' hymn never became the official anthem of the UN, as U Thant would have liked. For political and moral reasons, the pairing of Casals and Auden was not the most appropriate for those years, still in the midst of the Cold War, with many countries under dictatorships and with the superpowers unwilling to shake up the scenario, shrouded as they were in an essentially conservative moral. Notwithstanding, the hymn has become the "Hymn to Peace" and is so known and performed today.
Pau Casals --known as Pablo in the English- and Spanish-speaking worlds-- was a musician of great international prestige --he even received a posthumous Grammy award as late as 1989-- not just for making notable innovations in cello performance early in his career, adopted by cellists in general, but also as a tireless promoter of both the popularization of classical music and of the cause for peace and freedom. A good example of his commitment was the creation, along with other musicians, of the École Normale de Musique in Paris in 1920, and the Workers' Music Association in Barcelona in 1926, with the aim of bringing classical music to the working class.
Casals, who in 1931 had organised a concert celebrating the proclamation of the Spanish Republic, two years later rejected an invitation to play with the Berliner Philharmonisches Orchester in 1933, also in Barcelona. It was his way of decidedly and unswervingly opposing any totalitarian ideology, in that case Adolf Hitler's rise to power and the early Nazi persecutions. Already in 1917, he had publicly announced he would not return to Russia as long as there was an undemocratic Communist regime. With the passing of the years, Casals would remain firm in refusing to perform in any totalitarian state.....

All the authorities of Catalonia in the Eleventh Century met in a city of France, at that time Catalonia, to speak about peace, at the Eleventh Century. "I haven't played in public for nearly forty years. I have to play today. And I will play a short piece of the Catalonian folklore. This piece is called The Song of the Birds. The birds in the space sing peace, peace, peace. And the music is a music that Bach and Beethoven and all the greats would have loved and admired. It is so beautiful, and it is also the soul of my country, Catalonia."
These words are, even today, the most striking avowal ever made before a prominent international body on "the soul of my people, Catalonia." The cellist, composer and conductor Pau Casals (1876-1973) spoke in English before the General Assembly of the United Nations.
It was on October 24, 1971 when Casals was honoured at the New York headquarters of the United Nations, where he had already performed in 1959, and again in 1963 when he played El pessebre (The Nativity). The Secretary General of the UN, Burma's U Thant presented him with the Peace Medal, and the Catalan musician --about to celebrate his 95th birthday-- conducted the Hymn to the United Nations he had composed, with the lyrics by poet W.H. Auden. Upon completing the performance, Casals turned a blind eye to protocol and pronounced these emotive words. Then the stirring notes of the Cant dels ocells (The Birdsong) struck out in that enormous hall, infused of the magnificent solitude of the Maestro. As he reminded those present, he had not played his cello in public for a long time --maintaining his instrument as silent as his own country-- but the occasion was well worth it.
However, Casals' hymn never became the official anthem of the UN, as U Thant would have liked. For political and moral reasons, the pairing of Casals and Auden was not the most appropriate for those years, still in the midst of the Cold War, with many countries under dictatorships and with the superpowers unwilling to shake up the scenario, shrouded as they were in an essentially conservative moral. Notwithstanding, the hymn has become the "Hymn to Peace" and is so known and performed today.
Pau Casals --known as Pablo in the English- and Spanish-speaking worlds-- was a musician of great international prestige --he even received a posthumous Grammy award as late as 1989-- not just for making notable innovations in cello performance early in his career, adopted by cellists in general, but also as a tireless promoter of both the popularization of classical music and of the cause for peace and freedom. A good example of his commitment was the creation, along with other musicians, of the École Normale de Musique in Paris in 1920, and the Workers' Music Association in Barcelona in 1926, with the aim of bringing classical music to the working class.
Casals, who in 1931 had organised a concert celebrating the proclamation of the Spanish Republic, two years later rejected an invitation to play with the Berliner Philharmonisches Orchester in 1933, also in Barcelona. It was his way of decidedly and unswervingly opposing any totalitarian ideology, in that case Adolf Hitler's rise to power and the early Nazi persecutions. Already in 1917, he had publicly announced he would not return to Russia as long as there was an undemocratic Communist regime. With the passing of the years, Casals would remain firm in refusing to perform in any totalitarian state.....

The birds in the space sing peace, peace, peace. And the music is a music that Bach and Beethoven and all the greats would have loved and admired. It is so beautiful, and it is also the soul of my country, Catalonia."
These words are, even today, the most striking avowal ever made before a prominent international body on "the soul of my people, Catalonia." The cellist, composer and conductor Pau Casals (1876-1973) spoke in English before the General Assembly of the United Nations.
It was on October 24, 1971 when Casals was honoured at the New York headquarters of the United Nations, where he had already performed in 1959, and again in 1963 when he played El pessebre (The Nativity). The Secretary General of the UN, Burma's U Thant presented him with the Peace Medal, and the Catalan musician --about to celebrate his 95th birthday-- conducted the Hymn to the United Nations he had composed, with the lyrics by poet W.H. Auden. Upon completing the performance, Casals turned a blind eye to protocol and pronounced these emotive words. Then the stirring notes of the Cant dels ocells (The Birdsong) struck out in that enormous hall, infused of the magnificent solitude of the Maestro. As he reminded those present, he had not played his cello in public for a long time --maintaining his instrument as silent as his own country-- but the occasion was well worth it.
However, Casals' hymn never became the official anthem of the UN, as U Thant would have liked. For political and moral reasons, the pairing of Casals and Auden was not the most appropriate for those years, still in the midst of the Cold War, with many countries under dictatorships and with the superpowers unwilling to shake up the scenario, shrouded as they were in an essentially conservative moral. Notwithstanding, the hymn has become the "Hymn to Peace" and is so known and performed today.
Pau Casals --known as Pablo in the English- and Spanish-speaking worlds-- was a musician of great international prestige --he even received a posthumous Grammy award as late as 1989-- not just for making notable innovations in cello performance early in his career, adopted by cellists in general, but also as a tireless promoter of both the popularization of classical music and of the cause for peace and freedom. A good example of his commitment was the creation, along with other musicians, of the École Normale de Musique in Paris in 1920, and the Workers' Music Association in Barcelona in 1926, with the aim of bringing classical music to the working class.
Casals, who in 1931 had organised a concert celebrating the proclamation of the Spanish Republic, two years later rejected an invitation to play with the Berliner Philharmonisches Orchester in 1933, also in Barcelona. It was his way of decidedly and unswervingly opposing any totalitarian ideology, in that case Adolf Hitler's rise to power and the early Nazi persecutions. Already in 1917, he had publicly announced he would not return to Russia as long as there was an undemocratic Communist regime. With the passing of the years, Casals would remain firm in refusing to perform in any totalitarian state.....

Which Side Are You On (Ken Loach, 1985)
A riveting historical document, WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON? illuminates a moment in UK socio-political development which heralded the destruction of the UK as an industrial force, and showed Margaret Thatcher's determination to crush the unions. Loach's decision to foreground poems and songs that articulated the struggle rather than the violence didn't prevent the film from being initially banned. Nonetheless, an elegiac scene of a Welsh mining village with a voice-over by Dylan Thomas - "Put out the lights on the factory floor, we don't need factories any more" - contrasts with disturbing scenes of riot police brutality, and there are uncanny present-day parallels. Held on Thursday December 13th 2012 at Housman's Book Shop on Caledonian Road, London, the final leg of Aurelia Lassaque's UK tour featured Slovak poet Martin Solotruk, UK-Catalan poet Jessica Pujol and London-based Amy Key, SJ Fowler and Nia Davies. Aurélia Lassaque is a poet writing in French and Occitan. She is interested in the relationship between poetry and the visual arts and has worked with a number of artists. In 2010 she was artistic director of the Festival of European and Mediterranean Minority Literatures in Italy. She lives in the south-west of France.

The earliest dates of his career are determined by the fact that he was a vassal of Gausfred III of Roussillon, who died in 1164 and receives mention in several of Berenguer's works. It is quite possible that Berenguier was one of the earliest troubadours, and the poems that mention Jaufres (Gausfred) may date as early as 1150. Berenguer does not seem to have had much contact with his fellow troubadours. He may have met Pons d'Ortaffa late in life, and the latter may address him in one his songs as Senher En Berenguer.
All of Berenguer's surviving works deal with the theme of courtly love. One of his cansos was a model for a sirventes by his contemporary Raimbaut de Vaqueiras, who may have set it to the same tune, Berenguer's most "florid". The chief object of the love of his songs is Ermessen d'Avinyo, wife of Arnaut d'Avinyo. According to Berenguer's vida, Arnaut was a son of Maria de Peiralada, but this is probably a confusion with Maria domina de Peralada, the mother of Soremonda, the lover of Guillem de Cabestany.
Berenguer's well-preserved music is generally syllabic with a few melismatic phrase endings; conservative, generally staying within an octave; and motivically structured, having something in common with that of Bernart de Ventadorn.

Loach's decision to foreground poems and songs that articulated the struggle rather than the violence didn't prevent the film from being initially banned.
Nonetheless, an elegiac scene of a Welsh mining village with a voice-over by Dylan Thomas - "Put out the lights on the factory floor, we don't need factories any more" - contrasts with disturbing scenes of riot police brutality, and there are uncanny present-day parallels. As one poet-miner puts it "For those that have the wealth, privatise the National Health".
