David Paul Scofield CH CBE (21 January 1922 – 19 March 2008), better known as Paul Scofield, was an English actor of stage and screen who was known for his striking presence, distinctive voice, and for the clarity and effortless intensity of his delivery. Regarded as one of the greatest Shakespearean actors of all time, Scofield preferred the stage over film. This, and his decision to put his family first, has meant that he has never been as well known outside the United Kingdom as some other actors.
Outside his homeland, Scofield is best known for his Academy and BAFTA Award- winning performance as Sir Thomas More in the 1966 film A Man for All Seasons. Scofield had originally played the same part onstage at the West End and in a Tony Award-winning performance on Broadway.
Actress Helen Mirren, who appeared with Scofield in the 1989 film When the Whales Came, said of him, "He aspires to the soul rather than the character. He has no sense of personal ambition. He's one of our great, great actors. We're lucky to have him."

This was a magnificent production. I was so lucky to work on it. Such eloquent writing from Peter Shaffer, leaving Peter Hall needing little more to do than allow these gargantuan talents to just get on with it. John Bury's set design and lighting were a revelation. I'd worked on many West End musicals with their huge rigs and staging, and here Bury's simplicity stunned me. It was minimal without being in the least bit austere. It was pure elegance. Except... except maybe for that huge chandelier (that my drinking buddy Steve Milne up in flies one day sent crashing to the stage!). Young Simon Callow's Mozart was the performance of a lifetime. The part seemed written for him. And maybe it was - Shaffer would sit in on rehearsals making notes which would then become re-writes. But the gr...

Leon Garfield's Dickensian novellas, set in 1767 in a small English town on New Year's Eve, starring bewigged Paul Scofield, who certainly looks the part here of a cold-hearted master. A young apothecary's apprentice, Ben Partridge (Mark Farmer), souring from being forced to work late on the eve of the new year by his master Mr. Corbett (Scofield), is so filled with hatred as a result that he wishes for Corbett to be dead, going so far as to gather ingredients with which he hopes to cast a fatal spell upon the older man. A highly imaginative script from Gerry Wilson realizes in cinematic terms the well-constructed and taut original by Garfield, and fosters a strong sense of the dramatic, including several macabre scenes among the town's underworld, a favorite device of the novelist. A rath...

In 1948 Zionist Jews from all over the world came to Palestine and founded Israel. It was considered a “miracle” by Christians and a blessing from God. But immediately, the Jews began a bloody ethnic cleansing—a genocidal murder—of the resident Palestinians. Suddenly, things went murky and dark. Today Israel threatens the whole world with its many nuclear bombs. Its military force is paid for by the U.S.A. Is Israel really a blessing or is it a curse and plague on the world? Does DNA Science prove the “Jews” to be imposters, Khazars not related to Abraham and the ancient prophets? Is this new nation, in fact, the “Synagogue of Satan?” Have Christians been horribly deceived? Hear biblical and scientific evidence by pastors, rabbis, and scholars as the issue is resolved once and for all. W...

For 1130 years nightly without fail or gap the Ripon Wakeman (or Wakemen, depending on staffing) has sounded his horn at the four corners of the market square or monument and set the watch. Tonight, Mr. Paul Scofield was the duty Wakeman and he gave us all an very interesting talk about this tradition.
