Asia
Asia (
i/ˈeɪʒə/ or /ˈeɪʃə/) is the Earth's largest and most populous continent, located primarily in the eastern and northern hemispheres. Asia covers an area of 44,579,000 square kilometers, about 30% of Earth's total land area and 8.7% of the Earth's total surface area. It has historically been home to the world's first modern civilizations and has always hosted the bulk of the planet's human population. Asia is notable for not only overall large size and population, but unusually dense and large settlements as well as vast barely populated regions within the continent of 4.4 billion people. The boundaries of Asia are traditionally determined as that of Eurasia, as there is no significant geographical separation between Asia and Europe. The most commonly accepted boundaries place Asia to the east of the Suez Canal, the Ural River, and the Ural Mountains, and south of the Caucasus Mountains and the Caspian and Black Seas. It is bounded on the east by the Pacific Ocean, on the south by the Indian Ocean and on the north by the Arctic Ocean.

South Asia
South Asia or Southern Asia is a term used to represent the southern region of the Asian continent, which comprises the sub-Himalayan SAARC countries and, for some authorities, adjoining countries to the west and east. Topographically, it is dominated by the Indian Plate, which rises above sea level as Nepal and northern parts of India situated south of the Himalayas and the Hindu Kush. South Asia is bounded on the south by the Indian Ocean and on land (clockwise, from west) by West Asia, Central Asia, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. The terms "Indian subcontinent" and "South Asia" are sometimes used interchangeably.
The current territories of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka form the countries of South Asia. In addition, with deviating definitions based on often substantially different reasons, the British Indian Ocean Territory, Mauritius, and the Tibet Autonomous Region are included as well. South Asia is home to well over one fifth of the world's population, making it both the most populous and the most densely populated geographical region in the world. The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation(SAARC) is an economic cooperation organisation in the region which was established in 1985 and includes all eight nations comprising South Asia.

Zhaosu aims to build biggest horse breeding centre in Central Asia
There are about 9 million horses in China, and most are used for transportation. But nowadays breeding has started focusing on sports and entertainment. The industry is developing quickly, with growing numbers of equestrian clubs across the country. Reporter Han Bin goes to Zhaosu County, known as the "hometown of Pegasus", the mythical flying horse. Zhaosu aims to become a key location for horse breeding and racing for Central Asia.

The fates of China, Russia, and the United States, are profoundly bound to the Asian continent. Historically, these powers have shaped and been shaped by Asia, and it is clear that Asia continues to factor centrally in their strategic thinking. In recent years, both Russia and the United States have paid more attention to Asia as a central theater in 21st century geopolitics. With its Belt and Road Initiative and expansive activities in maritime Asia, China is also playing a more active role in Asian geopolitics today. Yet all three powers also face significant uncertainty. The election of Donald Trump thrust uncertainty into the future of US foreign policy, including in Asia. The recent 19th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party was widely interpreted as a prelude to a more assertive China. Russia’s own relations with Beijing and Washington are in flux, and Russia will have its own election in March 2018.
Where does Asia fit in the grand strategic visions of China, Russia, and the U.S.—and what are the implications for regional security? Where is there room for cooperation, and where is there a real possibility of confrontation? What form might either of these take?

The global financial crisis has shaken up the international financial architecture. Regulatory changes and unconventional monetary policies have mainly served the interests of advanced economies.
Raghuram Rajan, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, has been the main voice of emerging economies demanding a more balanced global monetary system. He would like to see more coordination to reduce volatility and a more effective “global safety net” to protect those most vulnerable. Emerging economies must be more involved in rethinking and reshaping the system.
Dr Rajan assumed charge as the 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on September 4th 2013. Rajan is on leave from the University of Chicago, where he is the Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at the Booth School. Between 2003 and 2006, Dr. Rajan was the Chief Economist and Director of Research at the International Monetary Fund.
Dr Rajan’s research interests are in banking, corporate finance, and economic development, especially the role finance plays in it. He co-authored Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists with Luigi Zingales in 2003. He then wrote Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten the World Economy, for which he was awarded the Financial Times-Goldman Sachs prize for best business book in 2010.
Erik Berglöf (@ErikBerglof) is the inaugural Director of the Institute of Global Affairs (IGA).
This event will include a welcome from LSE Director and President Professor Craig Calhoun (@craigjcalhoun) and introductory remarks from HE Mr Navtej Sarna (@NavtejSarna), High Commissioner of India. The Institute of Global Affairs (IGA) (@LSEIGA) creates a dedicated space for research, policy engagement and teaching across multiple disciplines to pioneer locally-rooted responses to global challenges.
This is the inaugural event for the ‘100 Foot Journey Club’, a collaboration between the High Commission of India and the LSE South Asia Centre. This event is organised in partnership with the LSE South Asia Centre (@SAsiaLSE), India Observatory and the High Commission of India.

The belief that China will soon become the dominant power in Asia is based on assumptions that its continued and rapid economic rise, and its emergence as a regional peer of America’s in military terms is all but assured. Such a belief underpins arguments that a fundamental strategic reorganisation of Asia is inevitable, and that it will be necessary and perhaps even desirable to concede to China significant ‘strategic space’. Dependent largely on linear extrapolations about the future, such arguments ignore the implications of China’s economic, social and national fragilities, its lack of major friends or allies in the region as well as the considerable military deficiencies and challenges faced by the People’s Liberation Army. With the Defence White Paper due for release in 2015, the government should bear in mind that planning for an era of Chinese dominance in the region—or even its emergence as an American strategic peer in Asia—would be premature if not improbable. Australia should not design its defence force for war with China, but it should be able to counter Chinese coercion and contribute to Allied military operations if necessary.
Paul Dibb is Emeritus Professor of Strategic Studies in the Strategic & Defence Studies Centre, Coral Bell schol of Asia-Pacific Affairs, ANU. He was head of the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre from 1991 to 2004. Before that he held the positions of deputy secretary for Defence, director of the Joint Intelligence Organisation and head of the National Assessments Staff. He studied the former Soviet Union for over 20 years both as a senior intelligence officer and academic. He advised ASIO on certain Soviet activities. His book The Soviet Union--the Incomplete Superpower was published by the International Institute for Strategic Studies , London in 1986, reprinted 1987 and second edition 1988.
John Lee is an Australian academic working on international economic and security affairs with a focus on the Asia-Pacific. Lee is an adjunct associate professor at the Australian National University's Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, a Michael Hintze Fellow at the Centre for International Security Studies, University of Sydney and a senior scholar at the Hudson Institute in Washington, DC. Lee is a board member of the Institute for Regional Security.

Post-conflict and political transitions are major opportunities for advancing women’s rights and participation. Yet structural inequalities and discrimination against women often hinder these opportunities once armed conflict is stabilised or regime change is achieved. The significance of economic structures, reforms and reconstruction policies and their effects on women’s participation and the sustainability of the post-conflict peace are particularly under-explored in the UN women, peace and security agenda and the scholarship pertaining to it. Post-conflict and political transitions are major opportunities for advancing women’s rights and participation. Yet structural inequalities and discrimination against women often hinder these opportunities once armed conflict is stabilised or regime change is achieved. The significance of economic structures, reforms and reconstruction policies and their effects on women’s participation and the sustainability of the post-conflict peace are particularly under-explored in the UN women, peace and security agenda and the scholarship pertaining to it. The research presented in this paper reflects on the case of Bosnia and Herzegovina to examine the ways in which post-conflict and transitional political economies set within a broader global political economy constrain women's participation in the rebuilding of peaceful societies.
