Double-burst of heavy rain forecast as skies unleash over south-east Queensland

Steady rain has been recorded across south-east Queensland on Sunday morning, with falls in excess of 100 millimetres on the Gold Coast hinterland.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Michelle Berry said the wet conditions will come and go into the week ahead with rain expected to intensify again on Tuesday and showers possible until Thursday.

In the 24 hours to 9am on Sunday, Upper Springbrook in the Gold Coast hinterland received 128 millimetres. Elsewhere, Banksia Beach in Moreton Bay recorded 51 millimetres in the same timeframe and the Brisbane region saw about 15-25 millimetres fall.

Looking ahead, top temperatures were expected to remain in the early twenties, with a strong chance of rain through to Thursday before easing to a slight chance of showers over the weekend.

As events were cancelled across the south-east, work continued on the ice rink being constructed in King George Square in time for the launch of Winter Festival next weekend.

Sunday's wet weather was created by an upper-level low pressure system in western Queensland combining with a surface trough closer to the south-eastern coast.

The trough was expected to move offshore and ease on Monday, however by Tuesday the low pressure system was forecast to arrive over the south-east, causing the heavy rain to return and intensify.
