Chemical-Free Cleaning For The Home

They say home is where the heart is so it goes a long way when our home is kept germ-free. Most of us rely on cleaning solutions and products in the supermarket aisle but there’s nothing safer than natural ingredients, many of which can be found under your roof. By relying on natural ingredients, you save time and money without the worry of any harmful effects to your family and pets. Take a look at our list of everyday pantry items for a tidy and safe in the comfort of your own home.

Lemon and vinegar

lemons-

When life gives you lemons… use it as a powerful cleaning alternative! Along with natural bleaching chemicals, lemons are tough on stains and mould whereas Vinegar’s acidic agents act as a strong degreaser and disinfectant. When the two are combined together, the natural scent of lemons will balance the vinegar and add a fresh citrus element to your indoors.

Combine three parts water + one part vinegar + two tablespoons of lemon juice.

Tip: Add citrus peels and let the mixture sit in a spray bottle for two weeks. The mixture can clean everything from appliances, countertops, glass, tiles and even floors.

Salt

Gone are the days of buying expensive mixtures to maintain your metal-goods. Salt’s gentle texture will effectively scrub and shines most metal surfaces. Salt-based formulas are also non-toxic, so unlike the products in the cleaning aisle of the supermarket, it poses no harm for children and pets.

Tip: To clean copper or brass, mix a paste of salt, flour and vinegar in equal amounts. Use a cloth to rub over the item then wash with warm soapy water. Finish by buffing the surface without worrying about any residue of scratches.

Tea bags

Not just a drink for the soul, tea holds plenty of cleaning properties including for wooden surfaces. Revitalise the appearance of your wooden furniture by immersing a cloth in cooled tea. Remove excess tea-water from the cloth and allow it to sit on the surface momentarily before wiping the area to reveal a polished look.

Essential oils

Instead of opting for store-bought air freshener, use the natural fragrance essential oils to invigorate the scent of your abode. By creating your own mixture from scratch, you give your home a personality of its own  that’s different from the familiar smell of commercial brands.

Tip: Try mixing drops of tea tree, eucalyptus and lemon with half a cup of water in a spray bottle to freshen the air.
