On October 6, 2017 the Union Pacific Steam Shop hosted a two and a half hour tour for the American Instituted of Organbuilders (AIO) in Cheyenne. The tour included the roundhouse and steam shop. Days after a fire ravaged San Timiteo canyon. Union Pacific resumed service and the traffic was very heavy along the line so boredom was not possible. In a few scenes you notice that the fire did a lot of damage along the tracks and it looks like the Cajon Pass when it lit up almost 2 years ago. Hope you guys enjoy!

Yes. I went to see UP4014 yesterday(1/26/14) in Covina, & Pomona, California. I like UP844 more but I wanted to capture the event because I live close enough to see it. To be honest, It was not easy to go there even I live in Los Angeles. I don't drive and chasing trains by bus or walk is not easy for anyone. I really wish I could have friends like everybody else but it's hard to find someone close to me. They are usually younger(under age) than me or older generations.
Anyway, here's my video of UP4014 and hope you enjoy it. This video included UP4014 at LA County Fair, UP 3105, SD40-2 locomotive's one of very last main line action at Metrolink Covina station, UP 1996, Union Pacific steam locomotive 4014 and many more. Thanks for watching my videos and you all are everything to me.
UPDATE: Thank you for kind words & glad you all enjoyed my video. I didn't think it was a big deal simply because "Big Boy" was not under steam. It was rather "rare" event for me to see it on Metrolink line(ex-PE) with Union Pacific trains. I'm glad I saw the last movement of UP3105 at Covina station. I'm glad everything went to well and many thanks to UP, Metrolink, Rail Giant, & Maintenance crew.

Pacific Ocean
The Pacific Ocean is the largest of the Earth's oceanic divisions. It extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean (or, depending on definition, to Antarctica) in the south and is bounded by Asia and Australia in the west and the Americas in the east.
At 165.25 million square kilometers (63.8 million square miles) in area, this largest division of the World Ocean—and, in turn, the hydrosphere—covers about 46% of the Earth's water surface and about one-third of its total surface area, making it larger than all of the Earth's land area combined.
The equator subdivides it into the North Pacific Ocean and South Pacific Ocean, with two exceptions: the Galápagos and Gilbert Islands, while straddling the equator, are deemed wholly within the South Pacific. The Mariana Trench in the western North Pacific is the deepest point in the world, reaching a depth of 10,911 metres (35,797 ft).
The eastern Pacific Ocean was first sighted by Europeans in the early 16th century when Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama in 1513 and discovered the great "southern sea" which he named Mar del Sur. The ocean's current name was coined by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan during the Spanish circumnavigation of the world in 1521, as he encountered favourable winds on reaching the ocean. He called it Mar Pacifico, which in both Portuguese and Spanish means "peaceful sea".

Spirit (comics)
The Spirit is a fictional masked crimefighter created by cartoonist Will Eisner. He first appeared June 2, 1940 as the main feature of a 16-page, tabloid-sized, newsprint comic book insert distributed in the Sunday edition of Register and Tribune Syndicate newspapers; it was ultimately carried by 20 Sunday newspapers, with a combined circulation of five million copies during the 1940s. "The Spirit Section", as the insert was popularly known, continued until October 5, 1952. It generally included two other, four-page strips (initially Mr. Mystic and Lady Luck), plus filler material. Eisner was the editor, but also wrote and drew most entries—after the first few months, he had the uncredited assistance of writer Jules Feiffer and artists Jack Cole and Wally Wood, though Eisner's singular vision for the character was a unifying factor.
From the 1960s to 1980s, a handful of new Eisner Spirit stories appeared in Harvey Comics and elsewhere, and Warren Publishing and Kitchen Sink Press variously reprinted the newspaper feature in black-and-white comics magazines and in color comic books. In the 1990s and 2000s, Kitchen Sink Press and DC Comics also published new Spirit stories by other writers and artists.

This engaging Kodachrome drama (formatted for television broadcast) from the Union Pacific ostensibly deals with safety at railroad grade crossings, but it's also about much more: youth's feeling of invulnerability; the highway patrolman as an authority figure; the look of the rural and urban West in the late 1950s; the urge to speed through a sparsely populated agricultural landscape; and the train's role as farmer's servant and potential killer. This film was made just five years after The Days of Our Years but belongs to a different world. This is not the close environment of urban railroad workers, but the wide-open spaces of the agricultural West. It was shot in Idaho, and the highway patrolman who carries the film forward wears an Idaho State Patrol uniform. It's summertime and the kids are out of school. Although they are responsible for farm work, they are free to roam the countryside and do. Danger lurks in this mobile world, but not in dark, enclosed industrial spaces -- it lurks in broad daylight along a sunny railroad track. The deaths that form the film's climax happen right after lunch on what looks like a Saturday afternoon, and death takes the young rather than the old. It's hard not to think that the Union Pacific is here again trying to pass the buck on safety. It costs lots of money to protect railroad crossings with gates and even more to construct separations between railroad rights-of-way and highways. Construction projects of this type have always involved contention between railroads and local governments, and the differing interests of railroads and government fill our history books. Suffice it to say that there's a great deal of background that isn't practical to include in the movie. Interestingly enough, the victims drive through a crossing with gates, lights and bells, so no one can pin the responsibility for this accident on corporate greed. The most quotable line: as two railroad crewmen stand by the wrecked automobile, one says: ""Why don't they look, Frank?"" Frank responds: ""I don't know. Why don't they look?"" This short dialogue fragment, and in fact the whole movie, has become a big hit on the TV show Mystery Science Theatre 3000. Charged with a didactic agenda, The Last Clear Chance somehow always manages to look interesting even when it gets intensely instructional. It had the benefits of an excellent cinematographer, Bert Spielvogel, who also shot two other visually distinguished films, Design for Dreaming and In the Suburbs and The Relaxed Wife. In May 2017, major flooding in Missouri caused BNSF Railway to shut down its River Subdivision between St. Louis and Memphis. Normally, at Ste. Genevieve, MO, Union Pacific's local moves traffic for its customer, Mississippi Lime, using trackage rights over the BNSF River Sub from here on north for approximately 10 miles to access its own line in Crystal City, MO. At Crystal City, the lime cars are then forwarded on to another UP local (LSE-57) which takes them to St. Louis over UP's De Soto Sub. However, when the BN River Sub closes due to flooding, derailments, or other calamities, Union Pacific has to re-open the normally out-of-service Mosher Branch of the former Missouri & Illinois (M&I;) Railway between Ste. Genevieve and Derby Jct. in Park Hills, MO, in order for Mississippi Lime's traffic to access the De Soto Sub. At Derby, the line joins in with a regularly-used UP branch to reach the De Soto Sub main line at Bismarck. The video starts off with the LSH-20 running southwest a few hundred feet east of the Interstate 55 overpass on the outskirts of Ste. Genevieve. Subsequent views include the Missouri towns of New Offenburg, Weingarten, and Park Hills. A special feature of this video is footage of the train crossing the famous Rough Creek trestle, one of the few of its kind in this part of the country. Unfortunately, I wanted to capture more video during this run, but my mobile phone developed software issues towards the end of the day and kept crashing, so several scenes were not included. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy my home video of the UP LSH-20 local using this rarely-used, historic route. -Scott Nauert

Union Pacific Steam Shop Tour and Big Boy 4014 Restoration
On October 6, 2017 the Union Pacific Steam Shop hosted a two and a half hour tour for the American Instituted of Organbuilders (AIO) in Cheyenne. The tour included the roundhouse and steam shop. Union Pacific Freight Trains on the Yuma sub
Days after a fire ravaged San Timiteo canyon. Union Pacific resumed service and the traffic was very heavy along the line so boredom was not possible. In a few scenes you notice that the fire did a lot of damage along the tracks and it looks like the Cajon Pass when it lit up almost 2 years ago. Hope you guys enjoy!

Union Pacific Trains Battle Donner Pass Snow
Donner Pass is famous for winter railroading. Every year, the Union Pacific Railroad has to fight Mother Nature in order to keep the rail line open, and trains moving. In this video, you will see a few Union Pacific trains as they work through winter conditions. The first train you'll see is an empty grain shuttle heading east through Floriston. Union Pacific Railroad flood detour over the normally-closed ex-M&I; Mosher Branch in Missouri
In May 2017, major flooding in Missouri caused BNSF Railway to shut down its River Subdivision between St. Louis and Memphis. Normally, at Ste. Genevieve, MO, Union Pacific's local moves traffic for its customer, Mississippi Lime, using trackage rights over the BNSF River Sub from here on north for approximately 10 miles to access its own line in Crystal City, MO. At Crystal City, the lime cars are then forwarded on to another UP local (LSE-57) which takes them to St. Louis over UP's De Soto Sub. However, when the BN River Sub closes due to flooding, derailments, or other calamities, Union Pacific has to re-open the normally out-of-service Mosher Branch of the former Missouri & Illinois (M&I;) Railway between Ste. Genevieve and Derby Jct. in Park Hills, MO, in order for Mississippi Lim...

Yes. I went to see UP4014 yesterday(1/26/14) in Covina, & Pomona, California. I like UP844 more but I wanted to capture the event because I live close enough to see it. To be honest, It was not easy to go there even I live in Los Angeles. I don't drive and chasing trains by bus or walk is not easy for anyone. I really wish I could have friends like everybody else but it's hard to find someone close to me. They are usually younger(under age) than me or older generations.
Anyway, here's my video of UP4014 and hope you enjoy it. This video included UP4014 at LA County Fair, UP 3105, SD40-2 locomotive's one of very last main line action at Metrolink Covina station, UP 1996, Union Pacific steam locomotive 4014 and many more. Thanks for watching my videos and you all are everything to me.
UPDATE: Thank you for kind words & glad you all enjoyed my video. I didn't think it was a big deal simply because "Big Boy" was not under steam. It was rather "rare" event for me to see it on Metrolink line(ex-PE) with Union Pacific trains. I'm glad I saw the last movement of UP3105 at Covina station. I'm glad everything went to well and many thanks to UP, Metrolink, Rail Giant, & Maintenance crew.

This engaging Kodachrome drama (formatted for television broadcast) from the Union Pacific ostensibly deals with safety at railroad grade crossings, but it's also about much more: youth's feeling of invulnerability; the highway patrolman as an authority figure; the look of the rural and urban West in the late 1950s; the urge to speed through a sparsely populated agricultural landscape; and the train's role as farmer's servant and potential killer.
This film was made just five years after The Days of Our Years but belongs to a different world. This is not the close environment of urban railroad workers, but the wide-open spaces of the agricultural West. It was shot in Idaho, and the highway patrolman who carries the film forward wears an Idaho State Patrol uniform. It's summertime and the kids are out of school. Although they are responsible for farm work, they are free to roam the countryside and do. Danger lurks in this mobile world, but not in dark, enclosed industrial spaces -- it lurks in broad daylight along a sunny railroad track. The deaths that form the film's climax happen right after lunch on what looks like a Saturday afternoon, and death takes the young rather than the old.
It's hard not to think that the Union Pacific is here again trying to pass the buck on safety. It costs lots of money to protect railroad crossings with gates and even more to construct separations between railroad rights-of-way and highways. Construction projects of this type have always involved contention between railroads and local governments, and the differing interests of railroads and government fill our history books. Suffice it to say that there's a great deal of background that isn't practical to include in the movie. Interestingly enough, the victims drive through a crossing with gates, lights and bells, so no one can pin the responsibility for this accident on corporate greed.
The most quotable line: as two railroad crewmen stand by the wrecked automobile, one says: ""Why don't they look, Frank?"" Frank responds: ""I don't know. Why don't they look?"" This short dialogue fragment, and in fact the whole movie, has become a big hit on the TV show Mystery Science Theatre 3000.
Charged with a didactic agenda, The Last Clear Chance somehow always manages to look interesting even when it gets intensely instructional. It had the benefits of an excellent cinematographer, Bert Spielvogel, who also shot two other visually distinguished films, Design for Dreaming and In the Suburbs and The Relaxed Wife.

In May 2017, major flooding in Missouri caused BNSF Railway to shut down its River Subdivision between St. Louis and Memphis. Normally, at Ste. Genevieve, MO, Union Pacific's local moves traffic for its customer, Mississippi Lime, using trackage rights over the BNSF River Sub from here on north for approximately 10 miles to access its own line in Crystal City, MO. At Crystal City, the lime cars are then forwarded on to another UP local (LSE-57) which takes them to St. Louis over UP's De Soto Sub.
However, when the BN River Sub closes due to flooding, derailments, or other calamities, Union Pacific has to re-open the normally out-of-service Mosher Branch of the former Missouri & Illinois (M&I;) Railway between Ste. Genevieve and Derby Jct. in Park Hills, MO, in order for Mississippi Lime's traffic to access the De Soto Sub. At Derby, the line joins in with a regularly-used UP branch to reach the De Soto Sub main line at Bismarck.
The video starts off with the LSH-20 running southwest a few hundred feet east of the Interstate 55 overpass on the outskirts of Ste. Genevieve. Subsequent views include the Missouri towns of New Offenburg, Weingarten, and Park Hills. A special feature of this video is footage of the train crossing the famous Rough Creek trestle, one of the few of its kind in this part of the country.
Unfortunately, I wanted to capture more video during this run, but my mobile phone developed software issues towards the end of the day and kept crashing, so several scenes were not included. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy my home video of the UP LSH-20 local using this rarely-used, historic route. -Scott Nauert

Union Pacific Freight Trains on the Yuma sub
Days after a fire ravaged San Timiteo canyon. Union Pacific resumed service and the traffic was very heavy along the line so boredom was not possible. In a few scenes you notice that the fire did a lot of damage along the tracks and it looks like the Cajon Pass when it lit up almost 2 years ago. Hope you guys enjoy!

I'm back everyone! It's good to be back to. Do not worry I have still been going out and recording/photographing trains! The major peoblem was my laptop screen broke due to the computer screen frame being loose and worn out and I was not able to get it fixed for anywhere close to a reasonable price. Union Pacific Across the Desert - Palm Springs, CA
Watch in HD! Early morning UP freight trains along the Sunset Route in the arid hot Coachella Valley in August 2017. Palm Springs is situated in the Colorado Desert section of the greater Sonoran Desert. Temps in August are triple digits for most of the day... This being said, I went out to catch the action super early in the morning to beat the heat, although it was still in the 90's even in the early morning hours. Went out two consecutive days from 6am-9am to Palm Springs area (Whitewater to be exact) to catch the action... I was at Tipton Rd for most the time. The eastbound traffic nearly tripled the amount of westbounds. Union Pacific must run their westbounds in the afternoon/evening. Thanks for Watching! AmtrakCal462

BNSF and Union Pacific Trains on Cajon Pass
Cajon Pass lies between San Bernardino, CA and Victorville, CA. It is BNSF's main route in and out of Southern California, averaging around 70 trains per day. Last week 35,000 acres on Cajon Pass has been burned by a massive fire, leaving many of the locations seen in this video charred. This video was taken before the fire occurred, so you will be able to get a look of what Cajon Pass used to be, as it will take many years for Cajon Pass to recover. The fire was very tragic and my condolences go out to anyone who lost property in the huge fire.

Union Pacific Bailey Yard
**Bailey Yard** "Union Pacific’s Bailey Yard in North Platte, Neb., is the largest railroad classification yard in the world. Named in honor of former Union Pacific President Edd H. Bailey, the massive yard covers 2,850 acres, reaching a total length of eight miles. The yard is located in the midst of key east-west and north-south corridors, making it a critical component of Union Pacific’s rail network. Bailey Yard has 17 receiving and 16 departure tracks handling 14,000 rail cars every 24 hours. Of those, about 3,000 cars are sorted daily in the yard’s eastward and westward yards, nicknamed "hump" yards. Using a mound cresting 34 feet for eastbound trains and 20 feet for those heading west, the hump yards allow four cars a minute to roll gently into any of 114 "bowl" tracks....

Yes. I went to see UP4014 yesterday(1/26/14) in Covina, & Pomona, California. I like UP844 more but I wanted to capture the event because I live close enough to see it. To be honest, It was not easy to go there even I live in Los Angeles. I don't drive and chasing trains by bus or walk is not easy for anyone. I really wish I could have friends like everybody else but it's hard to find someone close to me. They are usually younger(under age) than me or older generations.
Anyway, here's my video of UP4014 and hope you enjoy it. This video included UP4014 at LA County Fair, UP 3105, SD40-2 locomotive's one of very last main line action at Metrolink Covina station, UP 1996, Union Pacific steam locomotive 4014 and many more. Thanks for watching my videos and you all are everything to me.
UPDATE: Thank you for kind words & glad you all enjoyed my video. I didn't think it was a big deal simply because "Big Boy" was not under steam. It was rather "rare" event for me to see it on Metrolink line(ex-PE) with Union Pacific trains. I'm glad I saw the last movement of UP3105 at Covina station. I'm glad everything went to well and many thanks to UP, Metrolink, Rail Giant, & Maintenance crew.

I'm back everyone! It's good to be back to. Do not worry I have still been going out and recording/photographing trains! The major peoblem was my laptop screen broke due to the computer screen frame being loose and worn out and I was not able to get it fixed for anywhere close to a reasonable price. So...I got a new computer! And even better, it supports 4k and also is a lot more powerful than my other laptop. So, new videos will be dropping soon! Also will be testing out 4K this winter! Anyways I hope you all enjoyed! Please like, comment and subscribe if you did!

Temps in August are triple digits for most of the day... This being said, I went out to catch the action super early in the morning to beat the heat, although it was still in the 90's even in the early morning hours. Went out two consecutive days from 6am-9am to Palm Springs area (Whitewater to be exact) to catch the action...
I was at Tipton Rd for most the time. The eastbound traffic nearly tripled the amount of westbounds. Union Pacific must run their westbounds in the afternoon/evening.

In May 2017, major flooding in Missouri caused BNSF Railway to shut down its River Subdivision between St. Louis and Memphis. Normally, at Ste. Genevieve, MO, Union Pacific's local moves traffic for its customer, Mississippi Lime, using trackage rights over the BNSF River Sub from here on north for approximately 10 miles to access its own line in Crystal City, MO. At Crystal City, the lime cars are then forwarded on to another UP local (LSE-57) which takes them to St. Louis over UP's De Soto Sub.
However, when the BN River Sub closes due to flooding, derailments, or other calamities, Union Pacific has to re-open the normally out-of-service Mosher Branch of the former Missouri & Illinois (M&I;) Railway between Ste. Genevieve and Derby Jct. in Park Hills, MO, in order for Mississippi Lime's traffic to access the De Soto Sub. At Derby, the line joins in with a regularly-used UP branch to reach the De Soto Sub main line at Bismarck.
The video starts off with the LSH-20 running southwest a few hundred feet east of the Interstate 55 overpass on the outskirts of Ste. Genevieve. Subsequent views include the Missouri towns of New Offenburg, Weingarten, and Park Hills. A special feature of this video is footage of the train crossing the famous Rough Creek trestle, one of the few of its kind in this part of the country.
Unfortunately, I wanted to capture more video during this run, but my mobile phone developed software issues towards the end of the day and kept crashing, so several scenes were not included. Last week 35,000 acres on Cajon Pass has been burned by a massive fire, leaving many of the locations seen in this video charred. This video was taken before the fire occurred, so you will be able to get a look of what Cajon Pass used to be, as it will take many years for Cajon Pass to recover. The fire was very tragic and my condolences go out to anyone who lost property in the huge fire.

"Union Pacific’s Bailey Yard in North Platte, Neb., is the largest
railroad classification yard in the world. Named in honor of
former Union Pacific President Edd H. Bailey, the massive yard
covers 2,850 acres, reaching a total length of eight miles. The
yard is located in the midst of key east-west and north-south
corridors, making it a critical component of Union Pacific’s rail
network.
Bailey Yard has 17 receiving and 16 departure tracks handling
14,000 rail cars every 24 hours. Of those, about 3,000 cars are
sorted daily in the yard’s eastward and westward yards,
nicknamed "hump" yards. Using a mound cresting 34 feet for
eastbound trains and 20 feet for those heading west, the hump
yards allow four cars a minute to roll gently into any of 114
"bowl" tracks. Here they become part of trains headed for
destinations in the East, West and Gulf Coasts of America, as
well as the Canadian and Mexican borders. An average of 139
trains per day, comprised of raw and finished goods, such as
automobiles, coal, grain, corn, sugar, chemicals, steel and

This engaging Kodachrome drama (formatted for television broadcast) from the Union Pacific ostensibly deals with safety at railroad grade crossings, but it's also about much more: youth's feeling of invulnerability; the highway patrolman as an authority figure; the look of the rural and urban West in the late 1950s; the urge to speed through a sparsely populated agricultural landscape; and the train's role as farmer's servant and potential killer.
This film was made just five years after The Days of Our Years but belongs to a different world. This is not the close environment of urban railroad workers, but the wide-open spaces of the agricultural West. It was shot in Idaho, and the highway patrolman who carries the film forward wears an Idaho State Patrol uniform. It's summertime and the kids are out of school. Although they are responsible for farm work, they are free to roam the countryside and do. Danger lurks in this mobile world, but not in dark, enclosed industrial spaces -- it lurks in broad daylight along a sunny railroad track. The deaths that form the film's climax happen right after lunch on what looks like a Saturday afternoon, and death takes the young rather than the old.
It's hard not to think that the Union Pacific is here again trying to pass the buck on safety. It costs lots of money to protect railroad crossings with gates and even more to construct separations between railroad rights-of-way and highways. Construction projects of this type have always involved contention between railroads and local governments, and the differing interests of railroads and government fill our history books. Suffice it to say that there's a great deal of background that isn't practical to include in the movie. Interestingly enough, the victims drive through a crossing with gates, lights and bells, so no one can pin the responsibility for this accident on corporate greed.
The most quotable line: as two railroad crewmen stand by the wrecked automobile, one says: ""Why don't they look, Frank?"" Frank responds: ""I don't know. Why don't they look?"" This short dialogue fragment, and in fact the whole movie, has become a big hit on the TV show Mystery Science Theatre 3000.
Charged with a didactic agenda, The Last Clear Chance somehow always manages to look interesting even when it gets intensely instructional. It had the benefits of an excellent cinematographer, Bert Spielvogel, who also shot two other visually distinguished films, Design for Dreaming and In the Suburbs and The Relaxed Wife.

Welcome to the fourth segment in Union Pacific's Overland Route: America's Original Superhighway, by the Thornapple River Rail Series.
In this miniseries, part of our Superhighway specials, we're touring the entire Union Pacific portion of the first Transcontinental Railroad, long known as the Overland Route, nearly a thousand miles of railroad spanning from the Missouri River at Omaha, Nebraska to the Great Salt Lake at Ogden, Utah.
An incredible railroad, the original Transcontinental Railroad is today a superhighway of commerce, featuring dozens of freight trains of all types through the American heartland. From the lush framlands of the Midwest to the deserts of Wyoming and Utah, the railroad is as incredible and unique as any other.
In this fourth segment, covering the Laramie Subdivision, we begin in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the foot of Sherman Hill, and home of the UP Steam Heritage Program. We'll tour Sherman Hill, the legendary grade to the summit of the Laramie Range. We'll progress through Laramie, and out onto the high plains, filled with horses and cattle. We'll soon approach Rawlins, where the climate becomes exceedingly arid as the line reaches the Continental Divide.
If you missed the first three parts, be sure to check it out, plus continue onto the foinal segment, which cover the remainder of the line in a similar fashion from Rawlins to Ogden, Utah.

A tribute to the "Big Boy" locomotives produced by Union Pacific, "Last of the Giants" shows the end of a memorable era in Western Railroading. The "Big Boy" is the popular name of the American Locomotive Company 4000-class 4-8-8-4 articulated, coal-fired, steam locomotives manufactured between 1941 and 1944 and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad until 1959.
In "Last of the Giants" you'll see the development of steam power on the Union Pacific from 4-6-0s, 2-8-0s, and 2-8-2s up to 2-10-2s and even 4-12-2s, shown through film, photos and animated diagrams. This is followed by the development of compound articulated Mallets and simple articulateds such as the Challengers.
The Big Boy fleet of twenty five locomotives were used primarily in the Wyoming Division to haul freight over the Wasatch mountains between Green River, Wyoming and Ogden, Utah. They were the only locomotives to use a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement consisting of a four-wheel leading truck for stability entering curves, two sets of eight driving wheels, and a four-wheel trailing truck to support the large firebox.
According to Union Pacific senior manager of Heritage Operations Ed Dickens Jr., the 4-8-8-4 series originally was to have been called "Wasatch". One day while one of the engines was being built an unknown worker scrawled "Big Boy" in chalk on its front. With that, the legendary name was born, and has stuck ever since.
Measuring 132 feet long and weighing one and one-quarter million pounds, the Big Boys were appropriately named. These were the largest and heaviest of their type and could pull a loaded 5-1/2 mile long train on level track. Their tenders carried a massive 28 tons of coal and 25,000 gallons of water; and with a heavy train a Big Boy could use all of this up in the first half of a 57-mile rum. Although there were only 25 Big Boys ever built, they ran up a total of nearly 26 million miles in 18 years, hauling billions of tons.
