The island of Nevis is moving to the forefront of the Caribbean's green sector, wiith a drive in both eco-tourism and green energy. Nevis already has an established wind farm, along with a geothermal project with serious potential. The project, by West Indies Power, could potentially provide energy for the entire federation of St Kitts and Nevis. The island, which is anchored by the Four Seasons Resort, is one of the untouched frontiers of the Caribbean. 1. Columbus named the island Sant Yago (Saint James). The name "San Cristóbal" was given by Columbus to the island now known as Saba, 32 km northwest. It seems that "San Cristóbal" came to be applied to the island of St. Kitts only as the result of a mapping error. Christopher Columbus also named the other island Nevis because it looked like a snow capped mountain and the Spanish word for snow is nieves.
2. Basseterre, estimated population 13,000 in 2011, is the capital of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis in the West Indies. The city of Basseterre has one of the most tragic histories of any Caribbean capital, destroyed many times by colonial wars, fire, earthquakes, floods, riots, and hurricanes. Despite all of this, a considerable number of well-restored buildings still exist in downtown Basseterre.
3. It’s said that St. Kitts is so fertile that even the monkeys are green, and you’ll see colonies of them scampering freely beside the roads and beaches. Their ancestors were the pets of 17th-century French settlers, brought over from West Africa. Records suggest they soon escaped to establish a native population, and they’ve been thriving ever since.
4. Both St. Kitts and Nevis are volcanic islands. Because of this they have very dramatic central mountains and have had rather unpredictable geologic history with lush tropical vegetation. They have white beaches and black volcanic beaches depending on what side of the island you are on. One side of the island has black beaches while the other has white beaches.
5. Located in the Leeward Islands chain of the Lesser Antilles, it is the smallest sovereign state in the Americas, in both area and population. The country is a Commonwealth realm, with the British monarch (currently queen Elizabeth II) as head of state. It is the newest sovereign state in the Americas, having gained independence from the UK in 1983.
6. Brimstone Hill Fortress was named so because of the strong smell of sulphur emanating from underwater vents nearby. The French had not considered it possible to transport cannon up the steep and thickly wooded sides of Brimstone Hill. The construction of the fort then carried on intermittently for just over 100 years.
7. Mount Liamuiga is a 1,156 m stratovolcano which forms the western part of the island of Saint Kitts. The peak is the highest point on the island of Saint Kitts, in the federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, and in the entire British Leeward Islands, as well as one of the tallest peaks in the eastern Caribbean archipelago. The last verified eruptions from the volcano were about 1,800 years ago, while reports of possible eruptions in 1692 and 1843 are considered uncertain.

Nevis /ˈniːvɪs/ is a small island in the Caribbean Sea that forms part of the inner arc of the Leeward Islands chain of the West Indies. Nevis and the neighbouring island of Saint Kitts constitute one country: the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Nevis is located near the northern end of the Lesser Antilles archipelago, about 350 km east-southeast of Puerto Rico and 80 km west of Antigua. Its area is 93 square kilometres (36 sq mi) and the capital is Charlestown.
Saint Kitts and Nevis are separated by a shallow 3-kilometre (2 mi) channel known as "The Narrows". Nevis is roughly conical in shape with a volcano known as Nevis Peak at its centre. The island is fringed on its western and northern coastlines by sandy beaches which are composed of a mixture of white coral sand with brown and black sand which is eroded and washed down from the volcanic rocks that make up the island. The gently-sloping coastal plain (1 km (0.62 mi) wide) has natural freshwater springs as well as non-potable volcanic hot springs, especially along the western coast.

Saint Kitts
Saint Kitts, also known more formally as Saint Christopher Island, is an island in the West Indies. The west side of the island borders the Caribbean Sea, and the eastern coast faces the Atlantic Ocean. Saint Kitts and the neighbouring island of Nevis constitute one country: the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
The island is one of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. It is situated about 2,100 km (1,300 mi) southeast of Miami, Florida. The land area of St. Kitts is about 168 km2 (65 sq mi), being approximately 29 km (18 mi) long and on average about 8 km (5.0 mi) across.
Saint Kitts has a population of around 45,000, the majority of whom are mainly of African descent. The primary language is English, with a literacy rate of approximately 98%. Residents call themselves Kittitians.
Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest fortress ever built in the Eastern Caribbean. The island of Saint Kitts is home to the Warner Park Cricket Stadium, which was used to host 2007 Cricket World Cup matches. This made St. Kitts and Nevis the smallest nation to ever host a World Cup event. Saint Kitts is also home to several institutions of higher education, including Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, Windsor University School of Medicine, and the University of Medicine and Health Sciences.

The Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis

Located in the Leeward Islands chain of the Lesser Antilles, it is the smallest sovereign state in the Americas, in both area and population. The capital city is Basseterre on the larger island of Saint Kitts. The smaller island of Nevis lies about 2 miles (3 km) southeast of Saint Kitts across a shallow channel called "The Narrows."
The British dependency of Anguilla was historically also a part of this union, which was then known collectively as Saint Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla. To the north-northwest lie the islands of Sint Eustatius, Saba (the Netherlands), Saint Barthélemy, Saint-Martin/Sint Maarten and Anguilla. To the east and northeast are Antigua and Barbuda, and to the southeast is the small uninhabited island of Redonda, and the island of Montserrat, which currently has an active volcano (see Soufrière Hills).

The island of Nevis is moving to the forefront of the Caribbean's green sector, wiith a drive in both eco-tourism and green energy. Nevis already has an established wind farm, along with a geothermal project with serious potential. The project, by West Indies Power, could potentially provide energy for the entire federation of St Kitts and Nevis. The island, which is anchored by the Four Seasons Resort, is one of the untouched frontiers of the Caribbean. 1. Columbus named the island Sant Yago (Saint James). The name "San Cristóbal" was given by Columbus to the island now known as Saba, 32 km northwest. It seems that "San Cristóbal" came to be applied to the island of St. Kitts only as the result of a mapping error. Christopher Columbus also named the other island Nevis because it looked like a snow capped mountain and the Spanish word for snow is nieves.
2. Basseterre, estimated population 13,000 in 2011, is the capital of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis in the West Indies. The city of Basseterre has one of the most tragic histories of any Caribbean capital, destroyed many times by colonial wars, fire, earthquakes, floods, riots, and hurricanes. Despite all of this, a considerable number of well-restored buildings still exist in downtown Basseterre.
3. It’s said that St. Kitts is so fertile that even the monkeys are green, and you’ll see colonies of them scampering freely beside the roads and beaches. Their ancestors were the pets of 17th-century French settlers, brought over from West Africa. Records suggest they soon escaped to establish a native population, and they’ve been thriving ever since.
4. Both St. Kitts and Nevis are volcanic islands. Because of this they have very dramatic central mountains and have had rather unpredictable geologic history with lush tropical vegetation. They have white beaches and black volcanic beaches depending on what side of the island you are on. One side of the island has black beaches while the other has white beaches.
5. Located in the Leeward Islands chain of the Lesser Antilles, it is the smallest sovereign state in the Americas, in both area and population. The country is a Commonwealth realm, with the British monarch (currently queen Elizabeth II) as head of state. It is the newest sovereign state in the Americas, having gained independence from the UK in 1983.
6. Brimstone Hill Fortress was named so because of the strong smell of sulphur emanating from underwater vents nearby. The French had not considered it possible to transport cannon up the steep and thickly wooded sides of Brimstone Hill. The construction of the fort then carried on intermittently for just over 100 years.
7. Mount Liamuiga is a 1,156 m stratovolcano which forms the western part of the island of Saint Kitts. The peak is the highest point on the island of Saint Kitts, in the federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, and in the entire British Leeward Islands, as well as one of the tallest peaks in the eastern Caribbean archipelago. The last verified eruptions from the volcano were about 1,800 years ago, while reports of possible eruptions in 1692 and 1843 are considered uncertain.

Billy was a trained and certified French chef, having trained in The Celestial and La Masisonette restaurants in Cincinnati, Ohio. Billy and Akaisha met and married in Santa Cruz, California, 33 years ago. They spent six months traveling Europe, pursuing Michelin Guide restaurants with the intention of buying a restaurant and incorporating the food, wine, and research they had gathered. In late 1979, they purchased Luther’s, a 43-seat restaurant in Santa Cruz, which they owned and operated for ten years. Dean Witter took a keen interest in Billy and recruited him for their brokerage firm, where Billy eventually became Vice President of investments and branch manager of the Aptos office.
In 1989, they assessed their lives, their dreams, and their bank balance. They decided to make some bold choices and get on track to becoming early retirees. In January of 1991, at the age of 38, they retired and moved to Nevis, West Indies. From there, their perpetual gypsy lifestyle began, traveling through the West Indies, Venezuela, US, Canada, Mexico, and many nations in Asia. In 2005, they wrote the book, The Adventurer’s Guide to Early Retirement, A Common Sense Approach, which sold in 40 countries and is now in its 3rd edition.
