A-side video clocks in at 2:38. Is that the approximate length of this single? I've seen another video that had a version of this track clocking in at close to 4 minutes.

"Jimmie Brown the newsboy" is a coverversion of an old Carter Family recording from 1929 (it's on youtube...try it out).

I like the Lonnie Donegan version very much, it was also issued in Germany on the germany Metronome label in 1960.

I used to sing this in school as a (more or less) "Traditional" song with the BBC programme "Singing Together".

Brian Wilson is credited as arranger on the 45, not composer

5602

Here's the Kingston Trio's version

Sloop John B-Kingston Trio

and the Weavers version

And I always thought Brian Wilson wrote the actual song for the Beach Boys as there is no mention to other credited song writers on that Beach Boys 45.

I was very suprised to hear this song in slightly different lyrics and to speak freely .. I like this one more than the one the Beach Boys made.

The BB's version is supposedly directly inspired by the Kingston Trio's (not on 45cat -- album track?), which in turn I suspect came from the Weavers'. Wiki says the earliest trace of the song dates as far back as 1927 in the West Indies.

Sounds like the original to the Beach Boys version.

It is the same as the BB track but with different lyrics. Don't know about the JR one...

I liked both sides of this but Jimmie Brown The Newsboy gets my vote for no. 1. Perhaps it's something to do with me taking papers a few years before so I could go on a school trip to Switzerland. "I sell the morning paper sir, my name is Jimmie Brown, everybody knows that I'm the newsboy of the town" Great stuff Lonnie.

Wally Stott (and orchestra) on A side only?
