In an attack that the Philippine National Police Chief says was motivated by robbery, a lone gunman has entered a casino resort at midnight and started shooting and setting gaming tables alight. The gunman took his own life. There are reports that Islamic State is claiming responsibility as a terrorist attack, but that is being dismissed by the police.

Former New South Wales Labor minister Ian Macdonald will join his disgraced ex-parliamentary colleague Eddie Obeid behind bars after being sentenced to a decade in jail for misconduct in public office. Macdonald is the state's second former parliamentarian to be imprisoned for misconduct in public office, after Labor powerbroker Eddie Obeid was jailed last December.
