The Potomac River /pəˈtoʊmək/ is located along the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States and flows into the Chesapeake Bay. The river (main stem and North Branch) is approximately 405 miles (652 km) long, with a drainage area of about 14,700 square miles (38,000 km²). In terms of area, this makes the Potomac River the fourth largest river along the Atlantic coast of the United States and the 21st largest in the United States. Over 5 million people live within the Potomac watershed.
The river forms part of the borders between Maryland and Washington, D.C., on the left descending bank and West Virginia and Virginia on the river's right descending bank. The majority of the lower Potomac River is part of the State of Maryland. Exceptions include a small tidal portion within the District of Columbia, and the border with Virginia being delineated from "point to point" (thus various bays and shoreline indentations lie in Virginia). Except for a small portion of its headwaters in West Virginia, the North Branch Potomac River is considered part of Maryland to the low water mark on the opposite bank. The South Branch Potomac River lies completely within the state of West Virginia except for its headwaters, which lie in Virginia.

A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. In some cases a river flows into the ground and becomes dry at the end of its course without reaching another body of water. Small rivers can be referred to using names such as stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill. There are no official definitions for the generic term river as applied to geographic features, although in some countries or communities a stream is defined by its size. Many names for small rivers are specific to geographic location; examples are "run" in some parts of the United States, "burn" in Scotland and northeast England, and "beck" in northern England. Sometimes a river is defined as being larger than a creek, but not always: the language is vague.
Rivers are part of the hydrological cycle. Water generally collects in a river from precipitation through a drainage basin from surface runoff and other sources such as groundwater recharge, springs, and the release of stored water in natural ice and snowpacks (e.g. from glaciers). Potamology is the scientific study of rivers while limnology is the study of inland waters in general.

Each of us is connected to rivers in our everyday lives. Most of the six million people living in the Potomac River watershed do not realize that their drinking water comes from the Potomac. Since the Clean Water Act passed in 1972, the health of the river has improved. However, it is still in trouble and faces a number of serious threats: urban development, population growth and runoff from farms, pharmaceuticals and chemicals. The film follows the flow of the Potomac water from its origin, into our homes and businesses and back into the river. We become aware of the need to protect this essential resource and of how our wellbeing and that of future generations is intertwined with the health of the Potomac. Master Guide Brad McMillan recently travelled to the nation's capital for a July 4th celebration on the river - the Great Falls Race. This year was the race's 26th year and it was held on the center lines of the Potomac's most challenging set of rapids, the Great Falls. The year's winners include Asheville's Pat Keller and New Zealander, Mike Dawson. Now back on the Nantahala, Brad is preparing for his September trip to Austria for the Sickline World Creeking Championships.
In this video I check out the frozen Potomac river along the C&O; Canal National Historic Park. It's winter, the ground is frozen and I was bored. https://www.youtube.com/user/aquachigger
https://www.youtube.com/user/aquachigger In this video I dive the upper Potomac river and video some of the fish that I see. Included are carp, catfish, walleye, sunfish, bass, suckers, muskies and even a deep water turtle. I didn't find any eels, maybe on another trip.
I know 99.9% of you already know it, but check out Jon's Channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI6gB6eZS0c3ZrjcJq7xAtA What up! Had the opportunity to fish with Young Plugg himself yesterday out on the Potomac River. I really wanted to get on a cold water bite in the city, looking for schooled up smallmouth around the bridge pylons and Kennedy Center wall, but the water was super dirty so we ran down to Blue Plains. The water temps were 10 degrees warmer, and the water had great clarity so we busted out the crankbaits, jerkbaits and jigs. The fishing was awesome - ended up with 6 bass, best 5 fish went around 16 lbs anchored by a 5.68 lb chunk, and a giant blue cat. My footage doesn't do his fish justice, so go check out Jon's video for that one. Overall an awesome day, and in Janu...

http://www.eyeinhand.com/Marginalia/?p=7577 Nice 5 mile float downriver from McCoy's Ferry to Four Locks, Maryland. Launch site is past a tall train trestle, then the aqueduct of the C&O; Canal. Half way, we spotted a wild mink bounding over the rocks on shore.

Washington Attractions and Tourism World Travel https://www.youtube.com/user/World1Tube Washington Travel Guide, Tourism http://goo.gl/LzUve8 Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial pays tribute to the accomplishments of the 32nd US president. With sculptures, waterfalls, pools and walls of grey granite, it honours his services to the country during four terms of office and highlights historical events like the Great Depression and WWII. Most interesting are the two FDR bronze statues. Since Roosevelt never wanted to be pictured in a wheelchair, there is a larger-than-life statue in which he is wearing a floor-length cape. The true-to-scale sculpture, where he is sitting in his wheelchair, was added later. There is also a bronze likeness of Eleanor Roose...
