Britain's Labour leader calls for PM May to stand down

British Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says it's time for Prime Minister Theresa May to stand down after poor election results.

He has long harboured leadership ambitions and has a big public profile.

But many will remember his fumbling attempt at a leadership run in 2016, which ended in a humiliating withdrawal.

Philip Hammond, chancellor of the exchequer, occupies the role normally held by a successor-in-waiting.

But his northern spring budget broke a manifesto promise, by many accounts accidentally, and his political instincts have been questioned by allies of Mrs May.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd is also in the mix, having just held on to her seat after three recounts - and she would be seriously considered by the party's centrist MPs

The former investment banker stood in for the prime minister in one of the campaign debates and was seen as having done a good job against Jeremy Corbyn, scoring a hit with a "magic money tree" line that was picked up more widely across the campaign.

As a former Remain campaigner, she could be well placed to realign the party on a more EU-friendly Brexit path.

But her relatively high profile in a bad campaign will have done her few favours.

Brexit secretary David Davis will also be considered, as his role will have prepared him for the biggest task for an incoming PM.

Whoever does come in has just over a week before the beginning of Brexit negotiations.
