Occupy Brasília, 24th of May, 2017

“A demonstration that was planned as peaceful degenerated into violence, vandalism and disrespect, aggression to public order, threats to the people, many of them public servants, who were so terrified that we had to guarantee their evacuation” – Minister of Defense

Occupy Brasília: A national movement, a call from critics of the government of President Michel Temer, critics of labour and welfare reforms. At least these were the official claims. Organized by all kinds of reformers and leftists.

From It's Going Down

As the smoke from May Day clears we hear many people asking, why? Why did what happen, happen? We also hear many people throwing around baseless accusations and assumptions; it was a bunch of angry white men, there was no message, they weren’t really anarchists, it was just mindless vandalism. We are writing this to address some of this and to counter the narrative of the police, business owners, and main stream media. We cannot speak for everyone there, but as some participants we can speak for ourselves.

France: On Not Voting and Anti-Electoral Attack

I don't vote. Because I don't want to choose a master, to choose who will decide in my place what's right for me, who will force me to respect their choices, who will present those choices as my own. I don't want the majority to determine the conditions of my servitude, I don't want to the cattle to build the fences that enclose them and select those who will rule over me as well, regardless of what I think.

I don't vote because I don't want the world they force on us. I don't recognize the idea of the nation, of peoples, or of citizenship, because states always manage to construct identities that give the illusion of a unified population. My nationality, the language I speak, and the colour of my skin in no way determine who I am, and I don't recognize the borders of the state in which chance saw me born. In the same way, I don't want to hear about any “common good”, because I don't want to be part of any community – I don't want to be bound to anyone and I want to choose those with whom I build my life.

A Report and How-To Guide from May Day in Portland, Oregon

On May Day 2017, anarchists participated in lively demonstrations all around the United States, from the heartland to the coasts. In the Northwest, Seattle witnessed a successful block party at the site of a juvenile corrections center, while in Olympia anarchists barricaded train tracks to oppose fracking and clashed with police. Support arrestees here. Yet Portland, Oregon may take the cake for the most creative and combative May Day. Demonstrators not only defended themselves from unprovoked attacks from police who declared the march a riot—they also introduced exciting new innovations into the aesthetic of the black bloc street presence. Here, comrades from Portland explain their goals with the giant spiders they created for May Day, and offer a helpful guide for those who wish to make spiders of their own.

From Black Rose Anarchist Federation

Events like May Day are a temperature check for the collective hive mind of the left reflecting on the year behind them. Because it is a tradition that skates back more than a hundred years, it rarely stands out as the most pressing of days, mainly because it is part of a regular organizing cycle. Good years or bad losses, May Day comes on the same day.
