I Can't Dance

"I Can't Dance" is the fourth track from the Genesis album We Can't Dance and was the second single from the album. The song peaked at number seven on both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart and received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals in 1993.

Background

During one recording session, Mike Rutherford first created the main riff of the song he called "Heavy A Flat", to which Phil Collins suddenly improvised "I Can't Dance!". The riff was actually inspired by a Levi Strauss & Co. TV commercial using The Clash song "Should I Stay Or Should I Go". Originally the band did not think of it as anything more than a joke, because the song was too simple, too bluesy and completely unlike Genesis' style. Tony Banks said in an interview "It was one of those bits you thought was going to go nowhere. It sounded fun, but wasn't really special".

It was not until Banks added the keyboard sound effects that the song took on a whole different feeling—with a slight edge of humour in it—which made the band decide to record it.

Can't Dance

"Can't Dance" is a song recorded by British singer Lisa Stansfield for her 2014 album, Seven. It was written by Stansfield and her husband Ian Devaney, and produced by Devaney and Jerry Hey. "Can't Dance" premiered on Ken Bruce's BBC Radio 2 show on 14 August 2013 and was digitally released as the first single on 16 October 2013. Stansfield performed the song live during her Seven Tour in 2013 and 2014. The remixes of "Can't Dance" premiered on SoundCloud on 22 January 2014. In October 2014, five remixes of "Can't Dance" by Moto Blanco, Snowboy and the Danish/German soul production duo Cool Million, were included on the re-release of Seven titled Seven+.

Single information

"I Can't" was released on March 2, 1999 in the United States. The single was unsuccessful, receiving little airplay on urban radio stations and little video rotation on MTV, though it was slightly more successful on BET. It became her first single to miss the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked on the R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Track Chart at number 61.

The single featured a sample of the song "Everything She Wants" by the pop duo Wham!.

Early life

Gomez is of Mexican descent. Financial struggles forced her family to sell their home and move into the converted garage of her grandparents' house in Inglewood when she was nine years old. Gomez wanted to earn money to help out her family, so began working part-time jobs. Jobs she had included voice-overs and commercials. She also began recording herself in Garageband. Gomez has cited Christina Aguilera, Thalía and Jennifer Lopez as her musical influences.
