Benoni

Benoni has a low population density of 500/km2 and job opportunities abound as the city is no longer focused on gold mining but more on industry and services supporting the surrounding towns. Benoni boasts more horse stables per square kilometer than anywhere in the southern hemisphere. It was also the setting for Crazy Monkey: Straight Outta Benoni, released internationally in 2005.

Gold was discovered in Benoni in September 1887 and in 1907 the first Synagogue was opened. The Benoni Race Track which was disproportionately big compared to the village was opened in the same year. The South African Airforce trained pilots in Benoni during WWII and in 1957 Great Britain and France played the first of a series of three exhibition matches in Benoni.

Benoni has produced remarkable people, from actresses to a Princess, world champion boxers, a political hero, singers and businessmen.

The City Hall, built in 1937, is a good example of art deco architecture and the Benoni Museum details the 1922 Strike.
