Type 0.5! in your calculator to see what the factorial of one-half is. The result will be 0.886..., and the exact answer is the square root of pi divided by 2--amazing! How is this possible, when the factorial of a number n is defined as n! = n(n-1)(n-2)...1 and this definition only makes sense for whole numbers?
The calculator result is not an error, and in this video I explain how the factorial can be extended beyond the whole numbers for all real numbers by the gamma function. Once we extend the factorial function beyond whole numbers, you can see why the factorial of one-half is equal to the square root of pi divided by 2.

In mathematics, the factorial of a non-negative integer n, denoted by n!, is the product of all positive integers less than or equal to n. For example,
The value of 0! is 1, according to the convention for an empty product.
The factorial operation is encountered in many areas of mathematics, notably in combinatorics, algebra, and mathematical analysis. Its most basic occurrence is the fact that there are n! ways to arrange n distinct objects into a sequence (i.e., permutations of the set of objects). This fact was known at least as early as the 12th century, to Indian scholars.Fabian Stedman in 1677 described factorials as applied to change ringing. After describing a recursive approach, Stedman gives a statement of a factorial (using the language of the original):

Khan Academy
Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization created in 2006 by educator Salman Khan with the aim of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. The organization produces short lectures in the form of YouTube videos. In addition to micro lectures, the organization's website features practice exercises and tools for educators. All resources are available for free to anyone around the world. The main language of the website is English, but the content is also available in other languages.
History
The founder of the organization, Salman Khan, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States to immigrant parents from Bangladesh and India. After earning three degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (a BS in mathematics, a BS in electrical engineering and computer science, and an MEng in electrical engineering and computer science), he pursued an MBA from Harvard Business School.
In late 2004, Khan began tutoring his cousin Nadia who needed help with math using Yahoo!'s Doodle notepad.When other relatives and friends sought similar help, he decided that it would be more practical to distribute the tutorials on YouTube. The videos' popularity and the testimonials of appreciative students prompted Khan to quit his job in finance as a hedge fund analyst at Connective Capital Management in 2009, and focus on the tutorials (then released under the moniker "Khan Academy") full-time.

This video is a lecture on the basics of Factorials. A good understanding of factorials is very important if one has to deal with problems involving permutations and combinations. I intend to upload at least one more video on factorials so that more can be discussed about how to solve expressions involving factorials.

Hoy vamos a revisar el número factorial, un tema muy bonito y sencillo, que nos servirá más adelante en el tema de variaciones y combinaciones. No importa si estás en secundaria, eso, pre universitaria, o en la universidad, aquí encontrarás diferentes niveles de dificultad.
En el primer video, vamos a revisar la definición del factorial y algunos ejemplos muy sencillos, además de un par de propiedades.
El nivel 1, revisaremos 3 problemas interesantes del tema, combinados con ecuaciones cuadráticas.
En el nivel 2, haremos algunos problemas con cambio de variable, es el nivel intermedio.

Type 0.5! in your calculator to see what the factorial of one-half is. The result will be 0.886..., and the exact answer is the square root of pi divided by 2--amazing! How is this possible, when the factorial of a number n is defined as n! = n(n-1)(n-2)...1 and this definition only makes sense for whole numbers?
The calculator result is not an error, and in this video I explain how the factorial can be extended beyond the whole numbers for all real numbers by the gamma function. Once we extend the factorial function beyond whole numbers, you can see why the factorial of one-half is equal to the square root of pi divided by 2.

I intend to upload at least one more video on factorials so that more can be discussed about how to solve expressions involving factorials.

Brian McGilloway has spent most of his life either at sea or working on boats. At 74 years old, he now takes visitors out on angling trips on his purpose-built 40ft boat, the MV Meridian.
