SILLY BOYS - WANT YOU! (1982) (MLP)

Jordan Oakes review, Yellow Pills #6
Undoubtedly, these Silly Boys were part of the powerpop hard core, otherwise how can explain they released this kind of record ... in 1982 ? First off, the sleeve showed two guys in vintage '70s (three-piece) suits... Not quite a treasure perhaps, but sort of a buried... uh, silver dollar, this five-songer is pure new wave-era (but not new wave in sound) power-pop, which means Knack-like pounces of guitar, and gooey/lovey lyrics epitomized by the titles : "High School Crush","Corner Telephone" and "Subway Romance" (and two others). This two-man band had obviously spend some time listening to the great pop groups of the day (Shoes, Records, L.A. power-pop et al), and went about trying to recreate the magic of those bands without knowing exactly how the trick is done. And of course it wasn't a trick after all, but that other "t"-word talent, which wasn't in abundance in the Silly Boys' repertoire. Still, The EP is full of catchy hooks and the sort of specific power-pop fun -- early eighties style -- that can never, and will never, be created again.

YELLOW PILLS ISSUE #9 (1998)
Jordan Oakes began publishing his seminal power pop 'zine, "Yellow Pills" in the summer of 1990 out of pure teenage puppy love for riffing, jangly guitars, fake British accents and harmonizing voices that ache with pimply adolescent yearning. Issue #9 was the last one to be printed

VARIOUS - THE POCKET SYMPHONIES TO GOD Vol. 2 (2016)

Eight years after the first compilation i've finally made a sequel to "The Pocket Symphonies To God", working all summer long on this new volume. For info, only 6 artists (out of 52) of this new volume can also be found on the first one.

Again this is a 2CD-set and it comes with the usual PPC artwork including all details about the artists featured here. The compilation was made with lossless files only (minus one) though a few songs (either from CD or from digital downloads) appear to be lossy mastered - check the auCDtect files included in the FLAC folders.

NOTE: ZS allow parallel downloads

RASPBERRIES - REFRESHED (2000)
It's hard to picture power pop masters the Raspberries without singer Eric Carmen, but that's exactly what happened to the group during the early 21st century. After an attempt at a reunion (with Carmen) failed to materialize during the late '90s, the other Raspberries -- original member/guitarist Wally Bryson, plus latter-day members Scott McCarl (guitar) and Dave Smalley (bass) -- decided to go through with a reunion despite Carmen's non-participation. Filling in the gaps in the studio were Los Angeles-based session man Brian Barham on keyboards and the Tearaways' Jesse Benenati on drums, which resulted in the first all-new studio recording credited to the Raspberries in 26 years, 2000's Refreshed. Wisely not straying far from the group's original sound (a perfect blend of pop melody and riff rock), the trio successfully resuscitates the classic Raspberries sound over six tracks. With the songwriting credits equally distributed between all three members, Refreshed shows that Carmen wasn't the only talent in the band. That said, you can't help but think what the tracks would have sounded like if Carmen was in on the fun as well. Highlights include the Beatlesque "When Is Your Dream?," the up-tempo "Pop Teasers," and the obligatory love song, "Someone Like You." Refreshed is a fine little memento for longtime fans who wondered what the Raspberries would sound like in the 21st century. ~ AMG

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2016
May this New Year brings you more hooks than ever
•?((¯°·._.• ⓗⓐⓟⓟⓨ ⓝⓔⓦ ⓨⓔⓐⓡ •._.·°¯))؟•

FOOLS FACE - TELL AMERICA (1981)
From 1981, here’s one of the finest new wave power pop albums you’ve never heard of, and you’re not alone. Tell America, the second long-player from Springfield Missouri’s finest, Fools Face. I take that back – you might’ve heard of ‘em if you read Trouser Press or Creem back in the day – they shouted Fools Face from the rooftops but no one listened.  And no one bought.  So finding these original albums today is a whole lot harder than, say, the first two Knack albums and this is much better.  If you dig those first two Knack albums, or the Shoes, or 20/20, Marshall Crenshaw, XTC and Elvis Costello for that matter, chances are you’ll really dig Fools Face. Sure, they’re no longer around to take your ticket money, but I’m sure they’ll be happy to know you got there eventually. 30 years later.

If the Beatles had survived into the 80’s with their dignity intact, they might’ve sounded like this. “American Guilt” even quotes the Fab Four: “When push comes to shove, all we need is love.” But all hippie sentimentality is confined solely to the lyrics - the music is pure unadulterated guitar pop, the purity of which you could ONLY find in the smack-dab middle of America - Springfield Missouri - where the disco electro nightclub and new romantic import scene hasn’t infiltrated. “Maiden USA” is not only a great title, but a stone-cold power pop new wave GEM, with a monster guitar riff that any of those fancy major label bands would’ve killed for. “Behind Bars” is a bouncy new wave dance tune at breakneck speed with paranoid nerd rock vocals that sound a lot like Devo (who were middle America too) and the herky jerky skittish rhythms of XTC (who were middle UK I guess). “Valentine” is a solid slice of Knack-alike pop, but with a much more paranoid and ominous undercurrent than anything the happy-go-lucky “My Sharona” boys could ever muster.  And “L5” is perhaps the single GREATEST lost power pop hit of the 80’s, a breathtaking catchy slice of pounding power pop about space colonization that should have been a standout track on one of those Just Can’t Get Enough CDs.  It wasn’t, of course, and despite this being one of the best pop albums of the decade, so few people have heard it today, and it ain’t even out on CD, those bastids. Tell America is not just a title, it’s a request.  And with pop music in a more sorry state than ever today, it’s your civic duty.  So go on, Tell America how great Fools Face was.  Better late than never.

NEVER REISSUED ON CD
Special note: The album includes the usual set of custom artwork. The vinyl transfer was made last summer during vacation when my old mate Peter came by my beautiful countryside with a pile of scarce LP's.
