PAUL COLLINS - PAUL COLLINS (2000)

During the 90's, Paul Collins was living in Spain, he married there a spanish girl from Segovia and had a son. He recorded in Segovia the unplugged "Live in Spain" released in 1997. In 2000, he toured all over Spain (more than 30 venues) and released on the spanish label Julio Records, the eponymous "Paul Collins" album.

Special note: The album was given to me by a spanish mate a few years ago. Thank you again.

VIVA SATURN - BRIGHTSIDE (1995)

Viva Saturn's second full-length, "Brightside", flows seamlessly from jangly pop tunes to melancholy dissonance. Steven Roback's detached, nasal twang blends nicely into an atmospheric backdrop of textured guitars, piano accents and feedback. Stand-out tracks range from "Here Comes April," a bright melodic pop song, to the moody, desolate "Abandoned Car" with its layered guitars and reverb-drenched vocals. The stark "String Me Out a Line" features Roback's lone acoustic guitar and perhaps points toward his future solo career. The album closes with the band's version of Frank Sinatra's "One For My Baby," which Roback has called one of the saddest, most lonely songs he's ever heard. In this stripped-down version, Roback certainly proves his point. AMG

Songs
Send a Message / Black Cloud / Brightside / Here Comes April / Abandoned Car / String Me Out a Line / Mourn the Light / Distracted / Nothing Helps / Heart of You / One for My Baby (And One More for the Road)

REQUEST
The final Viva Saturn album, "Ships of Heaven", was delivered to Restless Records in fall of 1998, but the label had no scheduled release plans, but some copies were sold directly by Steven Roback, all autographed. So, if anyone has a proper copy, please contact me. Thank you.

THE TOURISTS
THE TOURISTS (1979) - LUMINOUS BASEMENT (1980)

Although The Tourists' main songwriter was Peet Coombes, they are now better known for two of their members (A.L & D.S) who went on to achieve great success as a synth pop duo.
Prior to 1977 Pete Coombes and the duo were called The Catch (one single on Logo Records) and then, they recruited bass guitarist Eddie Chin and drummer Jim Toomey, and rechristened themselves The Tourists. This saw the beginning of a productive two years for the band and they recorded three albums: "The Tourists", "Reality Effect", and "Luminous Basement" and released plenty of singles.
The band toured extensively in the UK and abroad, but despite modest chart success, they were critically savaged by the punk-championing UK music press. This, combined with legal wranglings and some personal tensions, led to the group disbanding in 1980. Peet Combes died in 1997.

Special note: Their second album "Reality Effect" has been reissued in The US but is actually a mixture of the band's first two British releases. "Luminous Basement" was briefly reissued in Japan around 1998 with a bonus song (included in 1980 as a 7" with the limited edition of the UK LP) and is really hard to find now. Currently there are no plans to re-issue The Tourists debut album. So, only a "Greatest Hits" of the band is widely available. This is the reason why the two vinyl rips will be available here in mp3 (320) only, even though they have been ripped in 44.1Khz-24bit.

The Tourists (1979)
Blind Among The Flowers / Save Me / Fools Paradise / Can't Stop Laughing / Don't Get Left Behind / Another English Day / Deadly Kiss / Ain't No Room / The Loneliest Man In The World / Useless Duration Of Time / He Who Laughs Last Laughs Longest / Just Like You

Luminous Basement (1980)
Walls And Foundations / Don't Say I told You So / Week Days / So You Want To Go Away Now / One Step Nearer The Edge / Angels And Demons / Talk To Me / Round Round Blues / Let's Talk A Walk / Time Drags So Slow / I'm Going To Change My Mind / From The Middle Room (Bonus) / Into The Future (Bonus)

JANE AIRE & THE BELVEDERES (1979)

Born Jane Ashley, Aire was discovered by talent scout Liam Sternberg in the late '70s. She flew to London and released a single, "Yankee Wheels," for Stiff in 1978. Two singles, "Call Me Every Night" and "Breaking Down The Walls Of Heartache" appeared on Virgin prior to the release of the full-length "Jane Aire & the Belvederes" in 1979 accompanied by a sharp four-piece English band otherwise known as The Edge (their LP "Square 1" is still available on PPC click here). The Jane Aire LP was originally scheduled for release by Stiff (SEEZ 11). Reviving '60s girl group pop with a punk aesthetic, the LP became a cult item but nothing more. Aire toured England with Lene Lovich, but she was eventually dropped by Virgin. After losing her label deal, Aire returned to Akron. She recorded demos for various companies in New York; however, all of them refused to even listen to the tapes. She found work in Akron as a waitress.

BILLY BLASTOFF - SOME HOTSHOT (1997)

The Mersey powered jangly roots garage pop sound of Billy Blastoff (named after a astronaut toy) was heard for the first time ironically enough, in a garage during a New Year's Eve party/jam session in Arthur, IL. way back in 1987.
Under the control room guidance of Maize Records head honcho / indie popster Bill Retoff the group spent two years casually recording a track here & there while maintaining a steady diet of gigs across the Land Of Lincoln managing to hit all the meccas including both The Cubby Bear Lounge and Partners Bar & Grill. All the while our boys juggled four very diverse personal schedules as none of these cats lived in the same zip code spread out from Chicago to Champaign. January 1997 brought with it the completed 11 song compact disc: "Some Hotshot" along with a steady stream of gigs and some favorable press. Alas, various career moves ( the kind that actually involved money) forced an amicable split in 1999 and although BILLY BLASTOFF never made enough racket on the scene to warrant a MOVIE OF THE WEEK rock-n-roll band dramatization they also managed to avoid the tragic airplane crash. Rumors abound of a possible studio reunion in 2010. Stay tuned. Source

Anyone interested in obtaining a very reasonably priced still sealed hard copy of "Some Hotshot" can contact the band in the comments area.

MARKUS HOOK ROLL BAND - TALES OF OLD GRAND-DADDY (1974)

This album contains all but three of the existing tracks of the Markus Hook Roll Band - an identity assumed by Harry Vanda & George Young at the very end of their four years stint in London as session musicians and independent record producers. Though they had regularly issued material under a string of assumed identities (Haffey's Whiskey's Sour, Moondance, Paintbox, Band of Hope, Grapefruit etc...) this was the most extensive of their projects.
The MHRB came together under the hand of ex-Pretty Thing Wally Allen, who managed to wrangle some studio time at Abbey Road. There they cut 5 tracks with their regular retinue of fellow musicians - just prior to journeying to Australia for a holiday.
Instead of returning to London, Vanda & Young relocated themselves in Australia and forgot all about the Markus Hook sessions - until a frantic message came through from Allen that America was keen on the tracks and wanted more. The pair refused to return to London, so Allen visited Australia early 1974 to record another ten tracks. This time, local musicians were used - including George's kid brothers Angus and Malcolm Young (who had not previously recorded ) who went to form their own band AC/DC.
After repeated requests for a tour to support the product were turned down flat, American interest waned and album release was scrapped (it was originally issued in Australia as "Tales of Old Grand-Daddy" and reissued in 1979 by Capitol Records with an alternate cover). The album was reissued in Australia in 1994 and is now out of print. Greg Shaw of Bomp fame always praised "Natural Man" as a cult power pop classic.

PAUL BEVOIR - THE HAPPIEST DAYS OF YOUR LIFE (1992)

Paul Bevoir
did his best to keep the British mod revival going well into the '80s as the main creative force behind the charmingly determined Jet Set and as the underground movement's leading songwriter, contributing perfectly crafted '60s-style pop songs to the Candees, Melvyn and the Smartys, and Dee Walker. After the Jet Set released their first LP, "There Goes the Neighborhood" in 1985, Bevoir released his first solo album, "The Happiest Days of Your Life" backed by The Family Way. The album received some acclaim in the British press but he kept his solo work in the background while he continued to push on with the Jet Set until they disbanded in 1988. Bevoir formed Smalltown Parade in 1990, releasing two albums before breaking up. In 1994, Bevoir resurfaced, releasing "Dumb Angel" for the Tangerine Label.

Originally, "The Happiest Days of Your Life" was released as a six song mini lp on the Dance Network label in 1985. The original six songs were 1, 3, 6, 7, 9, & 10 in that order. The extra songs are Paul Bevoir songs from around the same period or shortly after. The album was remastered and expanded in 1992.

BABYS GOT A GUN - UP (1990)

As i didn't find any reliable info about the band, here's the review written by Valerie Potter and taken from the Vox magazine (February 1991). On the strength of that review with a note of 9 out 10, i eventually bought the LP, and if you carefully read the article, the band should have been HUGE...instead of what they totally disappeared. So what went wrong?, the artwork as pointed by Valerie Potter, the year, the record company, the band, the music or whatever...who can tell?... For now, you can watch a promo video of "Take The Ride" on YouTube and grab the album in either 320 mp3 or FLAC (44.1Khz/24bit), artwork included.

Vox (February 1991 Issue)
"Babys Got A Gun's debut detonation provides a timely lesson for up-and-coming bands on how to take your favourite records and build on them, instead of simply duplicating them. Ignore the sleeve with its illustration of a 70's Oi! band. These young Scots have taken their haircuts, cheery loutish attitude and killer choruses from generation X, while the stack-heeled stompin' rhythms, girlie backing vocals and smalltown, starstruck, angst-ridden emotion come courtesy of Ian Hunter and Mott The Hoople, not to mention a powerful production that's layered down to the depths of the Skids.
Tracks include straightforward rockers like "Take The Ride", "Boy About Town", "Come Back Baby" and "Heart Beats On", but the stand-out song has to be "Born Late '68", a restrained epic in which i counted musical and lyrical references to at least five Ian Hunter compositions, strung together with enough original input from the band to succeed as a stunning pastiche, as opposed to a blatant rip-off.
All round, "Up" is the most exciting debut i've heard for several months. Yes, there are weak points in the lyrics and rough edges on some tracks, but Babys Got A Gun have it all going for them; their songs are both aggressive and tuneful. Gary Borland's vocals are distintively gritty and emotive and the band possess passion and "attitude" by the bucketful. "Up" leaves a boot print embedded in your solar plexus - and a smile on your face. Valerie Potter

BACK OF A CAR (BOAC)

BOAC "Back Of A Car" was a fanzine launched by Judith Beeman in Vancouver. Between 1994 and 1997, three issues were printed (see "Lonely Planet Boy" inner sleeve). It's only one year later that Judith Beeman started to release those three fantastic compilations that can be ordered directly from Judith here.

LONELY PLANET BOY (1998)
"Lonely Planet Boy" (Judith Beeman's favorite New York Dolls song) was limited to a run of 1.500 copies and contained the beautiful "Country Morn" by Chris Bell plus four other heavyweights and a few originals specially written for this collection.

TEENSTER (1999)
Judith Beeman followed up her first BOAC compilation, the Big Star homage "Lonely Planet Boy", with "Teenster" this tribute to the Seventies. The bands were directed to either cover a seventies song, or write a song that captured the feel of the decade. Bonus points for including cheesy high school picture of Judith on the cover.

LOVE IT TO DEATH (1999)

Finally, the last BOAC collection was released in 1999 and was a riff on her fervent interest in Alice Cooper "Love It To Death". A salute to the rockers of the 70's. Mike Simmons of Sparkle*Jets UK fame designed the artwork.
