TRIBUTE TO THE LEFT BANKE SHADOWS BREAKING OVER OUR HEADS (1998)

The Left Banke were something of an American equivalent to the Zombies so it was not entirely surprising to see this tribute album appear near the end of a 1960s pop-obsessive decade. The band had only two albums worth of songs., so most of the Left Banke output is covered here, actually the last two songs of the tribute were originally recorded by The Beckies and The Stories. The cast is more than impressive with legendary powerpop acts as Shane Faubert, Jim Basnight, Ken Stringfellow, Jeremy, Jason Falkner, and many others. The weirdest thing about this wonderful tribute is its scarcity...what a shame!!!.

It has been duly noted that no one in the '60s was able to imitate The Left Banke's sound with nearly the same effectiveness, and no artist has managed to do so in the ensuing decades either - until, that is, Jason Falkner got his hands on "Pretty Ballerina." His one-man-band version, although perhaps a bit busier than the original, has the same lonesome vulnerability, and his wisp of a vocal sounds as if you could snatch it up and put it in your pocket for that next blue day. Jigsaw Seen's "Desiree" is as brilliantly baroque as the original, but replaces its rustic luster with wonderful psychedelic flourishes. Starbelly toughens "Myrah" with a beefed-up rhythmic lope, while the Birdwatchers imagine "My Friend Today" as a Beach Boys song, transforming it into a gorgeous dream. Some of the artists completely inject their own personalities into the tunes, as with the Sun Sawed In 1/2's buoyant, '70s-ish "And Suddenly" and MiNsTeR HiLL's new wave zydeco on "Evening Gown." AMG

Jigsaw Seen (Desiree) / Admiral (Let Go Of You Girl) / Frank Bango (Goodbye Holly) / Jason Falkner (Pretty Ballerina) / Shane Faubert (I Haven't Got The Nerve) / Starbelly (Myrah) / The Sun Sawed In 1-2 (And Suddenly) / Blue Cartoon (Shadows Breaking Over My Head) / The Andersons (Give The Man A Hand) / The Birdwatchers (My Friend Today) / Minster Hill (Evening Gown) / Flamingo (Sing Little Bird Sing) / Gripweeds (Lazy Day) / Mark Johnson (Nice To See You) / Angie Heaton (Walk Away Renee) / Ken Stringfellow (She May Call You Up Tonight) / Phenomenal Cats (I've Got Something On My Mind) / Jeremy (Dark Is The Bark) / The Idea (Barterers And Their Wives) / Christines (There's Gonna Be A Storm) / Ed James (Run Jenny Run) / Jim Basnight (Brother Louie)

ICE CREAM HANDS - MEMORY LANE TRAFFIC JAM (1997)

The Australian power-pop band Ice Cream Hands comprised singer/guitarist Charles Jenkins, guitarist Dominic Larizza, bassist Douglas Lee Robertson and drummer Derek Smiley. Debuting in late 1992 with a self-titled EP, the group issued their first full-length release "Travelling...Made Easy" a year later. After 1994's "Supermarket Scene" EP, Ice Cream Hands issued another stop-gap single release, "Olive", before finally resurfacing with their sophomore LP "Memory Lane Traffic Jam" in 1997.

Ice Cream Hands fits neatly into the '90s power-pop revival, holding dear the values of guitar-pop bands from the Beatles to the Posies. Nevertheless, there's something different about their debut album "Memory Lane Traffic Jam" (albeit a difference that only pop fiends will be able to spot). Ice Cream Hands manages to stay faithful to pop conventions while developing their own identity - and many of their peers, despite their craftsmanship, haven't been able to pull away from the pack. As children of the '80s, they came to power-pop through new wavers like Marshall Crenshaw and jangle-pop, so there's a bit of a rootsy/folky underpinning to many of the songs. "Memory Lane Traffic Jam" doesn't sound like a revival, however. Ice Cream Hands peppers the album with enough sonic allusions, from the Eric Carmen-esque "Winter's Tune" to the stilted funk of "Olive" to post-alternative guitar flourishes, to keep things interesting. But what it really boils down to is the songs themselves. Charles Jenkins, the group's main songwriter, has a knack for constructing solid songs where hooks lead into new hooks instead of simply lying dormant. The songs are immediately catchy, but they grow stronger upon each listen -- a hallmark of a truly fine pop album, and it's all the more impressive when you take into consideration that "Memory Lane Traffic Jam" is a debut. Not Lame's American reissue of the original Australian release contains three bonus tracks - "Miller," "Sobersides," "Visiting Girl" - that are not on the original release. THE SCRUFFS - THE ACTUAL SIZE (2002)

Hailing from Sydney, The Scruffs (as they were known at the time) released this album in Spain only courtesy of Indiana Records. The band found themselves playing around Spain for three weeks in April 2001 to completely gonzo audiences. With the help of Love To Art, the band's Spanish management team, the record received favourable reviews both in Europe and the USA, and good press and airplay for "Can't Believe My Luck" and "Let You Down" on Spanish radio was ensuring favourable sales for the band in that part of the world. Later, thanks to Laughing Outlaw Records, the band changed their name to "The Wake Ups" , the album title (now "Wanna Meet...") and cover art were also changed. It is now available for ownership by all smart, sensible and switched on homes on this side of the planet.

"Historians might recognize this album title as a slight twist on the name of the debut LP by late '70s popsters The Scruffs. That's no accident; this Sydney, Australia, band used to be known as the Scruffs. The sound on this excellent disc is gleaned from several sources, including the college radio sounds of the Connells, the garage pop of Aussie icons The Stems, the powerpop of Tommy Hoehn and, you guessed it, The Scruffs. Ryan Ellsmore is an excellent singer songwriter, and is able to adjust his vocals from smooth and tender to gruff and edgy. Urgent power pop and garage numbers like "Let You Down", "Can't Believe My Luck" and "N Scale" sit alongside tender ballads "It's Not Me" and "Little Bird". The album was co-produced by the ubiquitous Michael Carpenter." - David Bash, Amplifier Magazine

Songs
Let You Down / Can't Believe My Luck / What's The Big Idea? / Second Time Around / Trash / Nobody Slows / It's Not Me / Keep It To Yourself / N Scale / My Friends Are So Boring / Little Bird / You Make Me Nervous

RAY BRANDES - CONTINENTAL DRIFTER (1998)

Though the Tell Tale Hearts disbanded in 1987, it continues to have a remarkably loyal following, particularly in Europe, where its records continue to sell. From 1987-1990, Ray's folk-rock group "The Town Criers" developed a solid reputation as a San Diego club band. Following a short European tour with the San Diego power pop group "The Shambles", of which he was a founding member, Ray began recording songs with Spun Records which became the nucleus of his first solo album, "The Lonely Sock".

In 1999, Ray Brandes signed a contract with Madrid's Snap!! label, for which he has recorded his second and widely anticipated second solo CD, "Continental Drifter". The album garnered critical acclaim in both the United States and in Europe, where it got a lot of radio play, particularly on Spain's largest national radio stations, Radio 3 and Radio Onda. "Continental Drifter" was nominated for a San Diego Music Award in the category of Best Pop Album of 1999, and was named by the San Diego Union as one of the top three pop albums of the 1990s! 2002 saw the release of "The Rise & Fall of Ray Brandes" again on Snap! Records and in 2007, Ray Brandes released "A Matter Of Time" (The Best Of Ray Brandes 1984-2006). Visit the Official Ray Brandes website.

Special note: This gem of an album is now really tricky to find, so if you can purchase a copy, grab it as soon as possible. Not Lame has 3 copies (only 3 !!!) of it right now... it won't last forever. The album is in my personal top 200 list of powerpop albums. Very highly recommended.

Songs
Walking Tall / Louise / Now That I Have Seen Your Face / Black Cloud / Angela / It Doesn't Really Mean A Thing / Stuck On The Inside / Hand-Me-Downs / Under A Lamplight / Tonight While You're Sleeping / How Do You Plead / The Angel On Your Shoulder / What Went Wrong / Ghosts / I Suppose / Still Feeling Blue / Monkey Planet

THE TELL TALE HEARTS - THE TELL TALE HEARTS (1986)

Around 1982, Ray Brandes founded the Tell-Tale Hearts, a 1960s-influenced punk/rhythm and blues band, with Calhoun and Klowden, alongside Mike Stax (later of the Loons/the Hoods) and Eric Bacher.
Considered among the leaders of the garage-rock movement, the group even appeared in People magazine, but surprisingly, save for a short jaunt to Springfield, Missouri, they never toured. They did, however, sign with Voxx Records, though the later '80s saw the original line-up of the group splitting. The french LP almost collects ("Everything I've Got To Give" is missing) the first two Voxx mini albums ("The Tell Tale Hearts" (85) and "The Now Sound Of The Tell Tale Hearts" (86), some of those tracks are available on the remastered "High Tide (Big Noses & Pizza Faces) Anthology 83-86" of the band released in 1994.

You can grab a promo video (MP4) of the band performing "It's Not Me" here

THE SHAMBLES - REVIVING SPARK (1995)

In 1989, Kevin Donaker-Ring (then Kevin Ring) and Bart Mendoza of Manual Scan asked Ray Brandes of the Tell Tale Hearts to produce and contribute background vocals to a series of sessions for Manual Scan.

By the Fall of 1990, Ray and Kevin began recording demos together, and eventually decided to form a band. They first enlisted Mark Z (ex-Crawdaddies) to play bass. During this time, Kevin, Bart, and Ray were also playing a weekly acoustic round robin at a local bar along with Jon Kanis. They played together under the moniker "The Fiascos", and this is where the special sound of The Shambles began to form. As Kevin quipped, "a musical fiasco is a shambles; so were we." The name stuck. In retrospect, it can only be seen as inevitable that Mendoza eventually joined the nascent band, and, with the addition of Dave Klowden, another ex-member of the Tell Tale Hearts, a new band was born. The Shambles have often been thought of as a vigorous hybrid of the two bands. A common love of 60's pop music and culture served as a unifying influence and this diverse mix of mod, garage, power pop - and even a touch of folk - would become The Shambles' own unique sound. Source: Matt Fidelibus, sleeve notes.

"Reviving Spark" (released in Japan only by 1+2 Records) contains the earliest singles, and with three Tell Tale Heart members in the band at that time, this CD has a strong garage feel to it. Consider "Reviving Spark" as an introduction to The Shambles, 2008 is looking to be a banner year for The Shambles, with more tracks surfacing across various compilations, and a brand new album "20 Explosive Hits" now available.

Songs
(She's Used To Playing With) Fire / Of Heart & Soul / Lousie / You Make Me Feel Good / It Is And It Isn't / For Jamie / It's Only Love / And If / James Bond Theme / I Can't Don't Want To Faster... (demo) / She Said It's Late / What Went Wrong

TRIBUTE TO THE FAB FOUR - THE PPCB WHITE ALBUM (2007)

In 2007, i started the "Fab Four Experience" for the blog i used to contrbute with. The revisited "White Album" was part of that Experience. Year 2008 is the 40th anniversary of the first mop tops "Apple" album. The ones who are buying "Mojo" every month should have listened by now to the first part of the classic release recovered. So, after a few requests made by some blog readers and old mates, i've posted again the 9th part of the "Fab Four Experience" just in time to celebrate the anniversary and compare my collection with Mojo's one.

Special note: The only differences between the first edittion and the PPC one are the revamped artwork and the bitrate (now it is a 320). Parts 7 and 8 of the "Experience" are in the making process.

STARBELLY - LEMON FRESH (1998)

Link removed - check Not Lame website

"Now, THIS is truly exciting news. Out Of Print for almost 10 years, Starbelly`s "Lemon Fresh" was one of the Not Lame label`s earliest releases. Pressed in a limited run, it sold out quickly and disappeared. Now, in 2009 it is reissued - WITH 12 BONUS TRACKS added to the original 11 AND for Not Lamers, an exclusive CD-r of a live show added onto the whole package! (the 12 bonus trax are listed below). This is a 19 song extravaganza that features more unreleased songs that are not part of the 23 songs on this CD!"

Possibly one of the most appropriately named debut albums in the power pop world, Starbelly's "Lemon Fresh" is an excellently sweet-and-sour confection of Big Star-influenced guitar pop. Led by guitarist/vocalist Cliff Hillis (also of John Faye Power Trip fame) and bassist/vocalist Dennis Schocket, this collection of 11 tracks written by three songwriters sounds not entirely unlike the legendary Grays release Ro Sham Bo. It's packed with memorable hooks, melodies, and melt-away background vocals. Nearly impeccable production (courtesy of Myracle Brah's Andy Bopp) and a flawless set of songs help make this set truly stand out from other power pop releases, and it is another high-water mark for Not Lame. Highlights include the smooth pop of the opening "This Time," the summer single "She's So Real" (a song that should only be listened to on sunny 90 degree days), and the up-tempo, start-stop "When Will You See." Cliff Hillis left the band after the first album to pursue a solo career while Dennis Schoket and Greg Shroeder released in 2002 the excellent follow-up "Everyday and Then Some". AMG

Special note: "Lemon Fresh" was a very limited edition (500) released on the Not Lame Limited subsidiary and is now out of print. Some used copies can be found on amazon or any online auction site. Very highly recommended.

Songs
This Time / She's Real / Sunflower / Rocketship / When Will You See / What You Will / Widow Sunday / Better Than Myself / To Be Loved / Made Of Glass / Letters To Mary

SILVER SUN - THE FIRST ALBUM DEMOS

I hope all of the blog readers already have the very impressive debut by Silver Sun. Their first album proper, Silver Sun don't mess with their formula much but come out smelling sweet due to James Broad's knack for writing classy pop songs with a bite. "Golden Skin" kicks the doors open and the band never lets up. "Julia," "Dumb," "Service" and "Bad Haircut" join the list of top-notch Silver Sun songs, with nothing on the album falling below the quality control limits set by their first batch of singles. It's pretty damn impressive. Here are the demos of the masterpiece everyone should own. AMG

Special note: As previouly stated for the Bullets post, i got this from the same mate a few years ago, and i also made the artwork...obviously based upon the first album.

500,000 BLOG FANS CAN'T BE WRONG
THE RETURN OF TRIBUTES OR NOT TRIBUTES

Once Johnny Ramone said: "In the 90's, we played some festivals with some of the other new bands, and i could see that these bands were being influenced by Pearl Jam, and bands like that. they didn't even know who The Ramones were. They could be into punk rock and not even be familiar with The Clash. They're influenced by stuff that came out in the 90's. They don't go back and learn the history. Go back to the beginning of rock 'n'roll and listen to everything that went down. Listen to The Kinks and you know who Slade are. If you're going to start a band now because you listened to The Strokes, how do you know what it takes to be good."

Special note: In 2006, i tried to compile some great cover versions made by some bands who knew a lot, as Johnny Ramone once said, about history. Here's the return of "Tributes or not Tributes : 500,000 Blog Fans Can't Be Wrong ". Previous volumes are still available here.

This CD contains the original version of "Swallowed Your Cure" (available on 1993's "Hi-Fi Sci-Fi") with John Easdale on vocals. Cover photo is from the short film "Haven't Got A Clue". RAIDERS OF THE LOST HOOK - Vol. 2 (2008)

In 1978, Greg Shaw wrote in the Powerpop special issue of Bomp: "Any way you look at it, Powerpop began with the Who (...and the Easybeats...). Their approach to songwriting was solidly pop - every song was short, catchy, hook-filled, built on bright, uplifting major chords, and they never shied away from those all-important "la la la's".

Second part of the new collection which shares again this "undying search for the great pop hook". Another 2008 PPC exclusive. First volume is still available here.
