Epidural administration (from Ancient Greek ἐπί, "on, upon" + dura mater) is a medical route of administration in which a drug or contrast agent is injected into the epidural space of the spinal cord. Techniques such as epidural analgesia and epidural anaesthesia employ this route of administration. The epidural route is frequently employed by certain physicians and nurse anaesthetists to administer diagnostic (e.g. radiocontrast agents) and therapeutic (e.g., glucocorticoids) chemical substances, as well as certain analgesic and local anaesthetic agents. Epidural techniques frequently involve injection of drugs through a catheter placed into the epidural space. The injection can result in a loss of sensation—including the sensation of pain—by blocking the transmission of signals through nerve fibers in or near the spinal cord.
Spinal anaesthesia is a technique whereby a local anaesthetic drug is injected into the cerebrospinal fluid. This technique has some similarity to epidural anaesthesia, and lay people often confuse the two techniques. Important differences include:
**UPDATE** July 25, 2017 (7:59): The exact difference in time varies from study to study. Epidurals have not been shown to lengthen the first stage of labor (some actually show that it decreases it) and studies regarding the effect of epidurals on pushing time have been inconsistent. Thus, the difference in labor/pushing time between mothers who have epidurals and those who don’t is not different enough for this to be a prime concern for a woman who is considering an epidural.
An epidural can be used to provide pain relief during childbirth and a caesarean without putting you to sleep. Find out more here: http://bit.ly/PcrMW5 The content is intended for general information only and does not replace the need for personal advice from a qualified health professional.

After having a "medicated" labor and delivery with an epidural and IV pain medications with my 1st, an unmedicated hospital birth with the twins, and a natural, home, water birth for my last and I get asked all the time which one was best. So here's a short video about the differences between my 3 births! Getting an epidural is a personal choice you should make with education you receive from your doctor. Pain is subjective. Everyone experiences it differently. It's going to hurt more during labor than you might think, especially if it's your first baby. You don't know what to expect. Labor is usually the most significant pain a woman has felt. We ask patients to rate their pain from 0-10. First time moms may say their pain is a 10, even when they're 1 centimeter. They just don't know how bad it's going to get. Some women deliver without using any form of analgesia, whether that be IV pain medication or an epidural. They make it through. There are pros and cons to getting an epidural and it depends on the situation you want. A pro is controlled pain. A common misconception about epidurals i...
I have two herniated discs in my lower back and this injection is suppose to help with the pain. Epidural is similar to the stuff they give to pregnant women given birth so that they do not feel is as much. This is a very small amount in comparison and obviously has some changes to it. The blood is just from the breaking of the skin not by anything deeper in my back so nothing to worry about. Thanks to everyone at the hospital for letting me video tape and thanks to the doctor performing the injection. P.S Caution if you don't like needles or blood. The marks on my back are from a different therapy I was trying at the time. The colour abnormality on my back is a disinfectant. Update: I did end up having decompression surgery on my back to fix one of the herniations. Not a very di...
Guys are so lucky they don't ever have to go through this pain!! After about 4 and a half hours... I decided to give in and get an epidural.

You wanted to know how painful it actually is to get an epidural. And a lot of people have a huge fear of needles. In fact, I always tell my patients who tell me that that I would be worried about you if you weren't afraid of needles. And a lot of people hear myths about the epidural needle and they say it's "THIS BIG". But it's like fishing - someone will say that about the size of the fish they caught when really it was "this big". The needle is big, it is large, but there's a good reason for that. It doesn't actually go as far into your back as most people think. It actually goes in about "that far" for most people, and you don't feel that. What you actually feel is the part where they numb your skin in preparation for the bigger needle. And the numbing needle is smaller than the needle...
