The following is an excerpt from Gallup’s 2013 State of the Global Workplace report:
Gallup measures employee engagement based on workers’ responses to the Q12 survey, which consists of 12 actionable workplace elements with proven links to performance outcomes. To identify these elements, Gallup spent years conducting thousands of interviews at every level of various organizations, in most industries, and in several countries. Since Gallup finalized the Q12 question wording in the late 1990s, the survey has been administered to more than 25 million employees in 189 different countries and 69 languages. The 12 questions emerged from Gallup’s pioneering research as the best predictors of employee and workgroup performance.
Although measuring employee engagement is an increasingly common practice, Gallup’s Q12 employee engagement metric is distinct in that it is backed by rigorous science linking it to nine integral performance outcomes. Gallup administers the Q12 to workers in various companies, nonprofits, and other organizations worldwide in an effort to help its clients improve their employee engagement. Meanwhile, Gallup researchers continually study findings from research on the Q12 to learn more about employee engagement’s impact on organizational and team performance.
Every two to four years Gallup completes meta-analysis research — a statistical technique that pools multiple studies — on the Q12. By conducting this research regularly over time and increasing the number of business units analyzed, Gallup stays on the cutting edge of how well employee engagement predicts key performance outcomes.
When sample sizes allow, Gallup establishes links to new outcomes that companies can measure and manage to drive organizational performance through employee engagement. Gallup knows of no other company that backs its employee engagement survey with such extensive research.
In 2012, Gallup conducted its eighth meta-analysis on the Q12 using 263 research studies across 192 organizations in 49 industries and 34 countries. Within each study, Gallup researchers statistically calculated the business/work-unit-level relationship between employee engagement and performance outcomes that the organization supplied.
Researchers studied 49,928 business/work units, including nearly 1.4 million employees. This eighth iteration of the meta-analysis further confirmed the well-established connection between employee engagement and nine performance outcomes.
The 2012 meta-analysis once again verified that employee engagement relates to each of the nine performance outcomes studied. Additionally, Gallup continues to find that the strong correlations between engagement and the nine outcomes studied are highly consistent across different organizations from diverse industries and regions of the world.

People strong in Input have a craving to know more. They collect and archive all kinds of information. Input is a relevant and tangible tool that can help others. It’s not just collecting, but collecting in order to use the information for yourself or other people when it’s needed in the future. It may not be instantly useful, but could be down the road. People say Learner and Input sound alike. But, Learner is grabbing information to get mastery and then possibly forgetting later, while Input will collect ideas and information for future purpose.
Raw Input is intimidating. It can provide ten different answers when all you really need is one. Like pointing a firehose at someone who just wants a drink of water. Mature Input is intentional. It can be a pathfinder to the solution someone needs. It says “there are a lot of available options, but let me help you sort to what you need.”
The most likely strength to show up with Input is Intellection. This makes people collect and consider, the pair together gives autonomy in how you think. The least common strength to have with Input is Self-Assurance. This could be because Self-Assurance relies on one’s self for a resource, while Input gathers their information from outside sources.

Gallup, New Mexico
Gallup (Navajo: Naʼnízhoozhí) is a city in McKinley County, New Mexico, United States, with a population of 21,678 as of the 2010 census. It is in the middle of the Navajo Reservation and a substantial percentage of its population is Native American, with residents from the Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni tribes. Gallup is the county seat of McKinley County and the most populous city between Flagstaff and Albuquerque, along the historic U.S. Route 66. The city was founded in 1881 as a railhead for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, and named after David Gallup, a paymaster for the railroad. It is on the Trails of the Ancients Byway, one of the designated New Mexico Scenic Byways. Because of the nearby rugged terrain, it was a popular location in the 1940s and 1950s for Hollywood Westerns.
History
Gallup was founded in 1881 as a railhead for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. The city was named after David Gallup, a paymaster for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. During World War II, the city fought successfully to prevent 800 Japanese American residents from being placed in wartime internment. Gallup is known as the "Heart of Indian Country" because it is in the middle of the Navajo reservation and home to many tribes.

Gallup measures employee engagement based on workers’ responses to the Q12 survey, which consists of 12 actionable workplace elements with proven links to performance outcomes. To identify these elements, Gallup spent years conducting thousands of interviews at every level of various organizations, in most industries, and in several countries. Since Gallup finalized the Q12 question wording in the late 1990s, the survey has been administered to more than 25 million employees in 189 different countries and 69 languages. The 12 questions emerged from Gallup’s pioneering research as the best predictors of employee and workgroup performance.

People strong in Input have a craving to know more. They collect and archive all kinds of information. Input is a relevant and tangible tool that can help others. It’s not just collecting, but collecting in order to use the information for yourself or other people when it’s needed in the future. It may not be instantly useful, but could be down the road. People say Learner and Input sound alike. But, Learner is grabbing information to get mastery and then possibly forgetting later, while Input will collect ideas and information for future purpose.
Raw Input is intimidating. It can provide ten different answers when all you really need is one. Like pointing a firehose at someone who just wants a drink of water. Mature Input is intentional. It can be a pathfinder to the solution someone needs. It says “there are a lot of available options, but let me help you sort to what you need.”
The most likely strength to show up with Input is Intellection. This makes people collect and consider, the pair together gives autonomy in how you think. People with Achiever get things done. Of all 34 talent themes, Achiever shows up in 35% of the population that has taken the Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment. People who possess Achiever are notable for their hard work, stamina and energy. It is a Theme of intense "doing."
Scot's personal brand at Gallup is defined by his Achiever theme. He is known for being a dedicated, hard worker, and he is proud of that reputation. He often works nights and weekends to accomplish his work. Scot has an intense internal drive to take on a lot of projects and get them done -- and done well.
Scot has Maximizer as his number one theme and Achiever as his second theme. As a result, there can sometimes be tension between them. Scot says, "Achiever wants to get things done, and Maximizer wants to get things done right." Despite this, he is grateful for the tension these two themes create. Maximizer forces him to say "no" to projects he would otherwise have no time to complete with the quality they require.
Because of his Achiever, Scot has high expectations of himself and others. He often works nights and weekends to accomplish his work. Scot has an intense internal drive to take on a lot of projects and get them done -- and done well.
Scot has Maximizer as his number one theme and Achiever as his second theme. As a result, there can sometimes be tension between them. Scot says, "Achiever wants to get things done, and Maximizer wants to get things done right." Despite this, he is grateful for the tension these two themes create. Maximizer forces him to say "no" to projects he would otherwise have no time to complete with the quality they require.
Because of his Achiever, Scot has high expectations of himself and others. He sometimes pushes his team members outside of their comfort zones, but he has to keep in mind that not everyone works during the weekends. He manages his expectations of his team members by relying on his Individualization theme. He customizes his expectations so they meet each team members’ strengths and capacity for new projects. Scot's Achiever also helps him celebrate his team’s accomplishments. He loves to put “recognition for others” on his to-do list because checking it off satisfies the Achiever in him and it provides recognition for his team.

People exceptionally strong in Restorative are adept at dealing with problems. They enjoy figuring out what is wrong and resolving it. Restorative wants to take something that’s broken and bring it back to its’ original glory. Strong restorative brings a solution mindset to daily problems, readily taking on problems others think can’t be solved. They analyze situations, identify shortcomings and make the necessary adjustments to resolve things. It is an executing theme, that says “I’m in the problem and I’m moving the problem towards a solution.” It has a forward progression to it.
Raw restorative is problem focused. Mature is solutions focused. Raw restorative takes on all responsibility to fix a problem on their own shoulders. Mature is the facilitator of fixing problems. Statistically, Restorative is least likely to be paired with Responsibility in an individual’s top 5 strengths.
