Extreme weather includes unusual, severe or unseasonal weather; weather at the extremes of the historical distribution—the range that has been seen in the past. Often, extreme events are based on a location’s recorded weather history and defined as lying in the most unusual ten percent. In recent years some extreme weather events have been attributed to human-induced global warming, with studies indicating an increasing threat from extreme weather in the future.
According to IPCC (2011) estimates of annual losses have ranged since 1980 from a few billion to above US$200 billion (in 2010 dollars), with the highest value for 2005 (the year of Hurricane Katrina) . The global weather-related disaster losses reported over the last few decades reflect mainly monetized direct damages to assets, and are unequally distributed. Loss estimates are lower bound estimates because many impacts, such as loss of human lives, cultural heritage, and ecosystem services, are difficult to value and monetize, and thus they are poorly reflected in estimates of losses.
National Geographic or NatGeo may refer to:
Weather is the state of the atmosphere, to the degree that it is hot or cold, wet or dry, calm or stormy, clear or cloudy. Most weather phenomena occur in the troposphere, just below the stratosphere. Weather refers to day-to-day temperature and precipitation activity, whereas climate is the term for the statistics of atmospheric conditions over longer periods of time. When used without qualification, "weather" is generally understood to mean the weather of Earth.
Weather is driven by air pressure, temperature and moisture differences between one place and another. These differences can occur due to the sun's angle at any particular spot, which varies by latitude from the tropics. The strong temperature contrast between polar and tropical air gives rise to the jet stream. Weather systems in the mid-latitudes, such as extratropical cyclones, are caused by instabilities of the jet stream flow. Because the Earth's axis is tilted relative to its orbital plane, sunlight is incident at different angles at different times of the year. On Earth's surface, temperatures usually range ±40 °C (−40 °F to 100 °F) annually. Over thousands of years, changes in Earth's orbit can affect the amount and distribution of solar energy received by the Earth, thus influencing long-term climate and global climate change.
Extreme or xtreme may refer to:
An extreme weather compilation of tornadoes caught on tape, hurricane, sandstorm, hailstorm, extreme rain, extreme wind. Actual storm footage and videos.
Sun, wind, and rain are basic to life, but sometimes the weather is more than just that. Sometimes it's stronger, violent. The wind becomes a tornado, the rain a hurricane. The Earth's atmosphere, for a moment, makes it uninhabitable. And there's nothing we can do about extreme weather but try to predict it, prepare for it and hope that it never happens here. This DVD from the Discovery Channel looks at the innermost workings of a storm system to reveal the visible and invisible forces that drive our weather. Using the latest satellite imagery and 3D graphic animation, trade-winds, tornadoes, lightning, monsoon, and hurricanes are examined in detail. From the aurora borealis to the bizarre downpouring of fish and frogs, we learn that the earth's atmosphere is a delicate and ever-changin...

Our planet is a pretty nice place to live, and we have some pleasant weather — most of the time. We see extreme weather from time to time, and that leads to some amazing weather records getting broken. Things like the hottest temperature or the coldest temperature ever recorded. You wouldn't believe the most rain to fall in an hour, a day or an entire year! Stuart Robinson is a storm chaser. Just like St. Paul, he had a revelatory experience; however his was in the cinema, watching the blockbuster movie 'Twister'. Since then Stuart's attempted to 'intercept' 5 Hurricanes, and indeed on two of these trips he's actually made it into the eye of the storm. Now some two years since his last 'chase' Stuart is planning another adventure with his American colleague Roger Hill, arguably the world's most experienced storm chaser. With the weather patterns indicating a huge storm towards the end of September will these two storm junkies manage to navigate their way into the carnage to get their fix? At home Stuart keeps all this excitement and adrenaline largely under wraps. His long term girlfriend Alison is hugely under whelmed with his pastime. This...
