FILM DESCRIPTION:
Like such other early '70s Hollywood films as Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs (1971), Deliverance ponders violent instincts and definitions of manhood, ideas made all the more pressing by the period's escalating violence and assault on traditional gender roles. Regardless of these headier concerns, the critically praised realism of the action scenes on the river, with the actors performing a lot of the stunts, helped make the film a hit. Shooting on location on the Chattoga River in Georgia, cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond captured the appeal and the peril of the river's pristine isolation, enhancing both the adventure's visceral thrills and Dickey's philosophical inquiry into man's true nature. Deliverance was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, although Dickey's screenplay of his novel was passed over, as was Reynolds' star-making turn. With its chilling sense of infinite menace, Deliverance spoke to contemporary anxieties over what anyone could do, given the right (or wrong) circumstances.

John Boorman
John Boorman (/ˈbʊərmən/; born 18 January 1933) is an English film-maker who is best known for his feature films such as Point Blank, Hell in the Pacific, Deliverance, Zardoz, Excalibur, The Emerald Forest, Hope and Glory, The General, The Tailor of Panama, and Queen and Country. He has directed a total of 22 films and has received five Academy Award nominations.
Early life
Boorman was born in Shepperton, Middlesex, England, the son of Ivy (née Chapman) and George Boorman. He was educated at the Salesian School in Chertsey, Surrey, even though his family was not Roman Catholic.
Career
Boorman first began by working as a drycleaner and journalist in the late 1950s. He ran the newsrooms at Southern Television in Southampton and Dover before moving into TV documentary filmmaking, eventually becoming the head of the BBC's Bristol-based Documentary Unit in 1962.
Capturing the interest of producer David Deutsch, he was offered the chance to direct a film aimed at repeating the success of A Hard Day's Night (directed by Richard Lester in 1964): Catch Us If You Can (1965) is about competing pop group Dave Clark Five. While not as successful commercially as Lester's film, it drew good reviews from distinguished critics such as Pauline Kael and Dilys Powell and smoothed Boorman's way into the film industry. Boorman was drawn to Hollywood for the opportunity to make larger-scale cinema and in Point Blank (1967), a powerful interpretation of a Richard Stark novel, brought a stranger's vision to the decaying fortress of Alcatraz and the proto-hippy world of San Francisco. Lee Marvin gave the then-unknown director his full support, telling MGM he deferred all his approvals on the project to Boorman.

Boorman's home and its surroundings in Wicklow are an important part of the film (almost a character), and were the location for much of the filming of Excalibur.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Like such other early '70s Hollywood films as Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs (1971), Deliverance ponders violent instincts and definitions of manhood, ideas made all the more pressing by the period's escalating violence and assault on traditional gender roles. Regardless of these headier concerns, the critically praised realism of the action scenes on the river, with the actors performing a lot of the stunts, helped make the film a hit. Shooting on location on the Chattoga River in Georgia, cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond captured the appeal and the peril of the river's pristine isolation, enhancing both the adventure's visceral thrills and Dickey's philosophical inquiry into man's true nature. Deliverance was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, although Dickey's screenplay of his novel was passed over, as was Reynolds' star-making turn. With its chilling sense of infinite menace, Deliverance spoke to contemporary anxieties over what anyone could do, given the right (or wrong) circumstances.

Nach dieser Filmschau am Abend des 17.8.2016 steht Jonathan Meese glühend euphorisiert im engsten Kreise seiner Vertrauten und verkündet, daß von nun an dringlichst „ZARDOZ II“ gedreht werden müsse.
Sogleich zieht Meese am nächsten Morgen für eigene Photographie~ und Filmaufnahmen in die Wicklow Mountains zu jenen originalen Drehorten, wo ZARDOZ vor über 40 Jahren entstand.
Völlig überwältigt und angefüllt von den dort gesammelten Eindrücken absolviert Jonathan Meese noch am gleichen Abend im Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin die zweistündige Open Air Performance „L.O.V.E.~MONSTERS DO NOT VOTE ! (HUMPTY DUMPTY‘S LAW OF NATURE)“. Dabei kommen u.a. auch ZARDOZ~Masken zum Einsatz. Er beendet die Performance ganz nach „ZARDOZ“ mit einem „(Saal)~Schuß“ aus einer Spielzeugpistole, denn er freut sich bereits auf den nächsten Tag, wenn er mit seiner Mutter jenen legendären John Boorman von Angesicht zu Angesicht endlich treffen wird.
Der mittlerweile 83 Jahre alte John Boorman empfängt am Vormittag des 19.8.2016 auf seinem Anwesen in den Wicklow Mountains Jonathan Meese und dessen Mutter Brigitte Meese. Die beinahe gleichaltrige Grande Dame der K.U.N.S.T. übernimmt sofort die Konversation und spielt die beiden Großkünstler gekonnt aufeinander ein. Ein kleiner Gang vor die Tür und ein intensives Gespräch in Boormans privaten Salon folgen. Als Boorman dem vor Glück begeisterten Meese verrät, daß er die Idee zu der Geschichte um „ZARDOZ“ von den ihm umgebenden Bäumen, also aus der Vitalität der Natur, empfangen hat, ist den Anwesenden klar, daß Jonathan Meese in John Boorman einen Bruder im Geiste gefunden hat. Nun kann Jonathan Meese ohne Scheu dem Kultregisseur vortragen, daß er die Zeit für gekommen hält, einen zweiten Teil, also „ZARDOZ II“ zu drehen. Boorman fühlt sich sichtlich wortwört~ lich „inspiriert“ von Meeses Idee und dessen charmanten Avancen. Beide tauschen ihre Gedanken derart auf aller höchstem Niveau aus, so daß getrost von einem Gipfeltreffen zweier Meister ihres Faches gesprochen werden kann. Für Jonathan Meese ist diese legendäre Begegnung der Beginn seiner neuen Leidenschaft: „ZARDOZ II“

Völlig überwältigt und angefüllt von den dort gesammelten Eindrücken absolviert Jonathan Meese noch am gleichen Abend im Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin die zweistündige Open Air Performance „L.O.V.E.~MONSTERS DO NOT VOTE ! (HUMPTY DUMPTY‘S LAW OF NATURE)“. Dabei kommen u.a. auch ZARDOZ~Masken zum Einsatz. Er beendet die Performance ganz nach „ZARDOZ“ mit einem „(Saal)~Schuß“ aus einer Spielzeugpistole, denn er freut sich bereits auf den nächsten Tag, wenn er mit seiner Mutter jenen legendären John Boorman von Angesicht zu Angesicht endlich treffen wird.
Der mittlerweile 83 Jahre alte John Boorman empfängt am Vormittag des 19.8.2016 auf seinem Anwesen in den Wicklow Mountains Jonathan Meese und dessen Mutter Brigitte Meese. Die beinahe gleichaltrige Grande Dame der K.U.N.S.T. übernimmt sofort die Konversation und spielt die beiden Großkünstler gekonnt aufeinander ein. Ein kleiner Gang vor die Tür und ein intensives Gespräch in Boormans privaten Salon folgen. Als Boorman dem vor Glück begeisterten Meese verrät, daß er die Idee zu der Geschichte um „ZARDOZ“ von den ihm umgebenden Bäumen, also aus der Vitalität der Natur, empfangen hat, ist den Anwesenden klar, daß Jonathan Meese in John Boorman einen Bruder im Geiste gefunden hat. Nun kann Jonathan Meese ohne Scheu dem Kultregisseur vortragen, daß er die Zeit für gekommen hält, einen zweiten Teil, also „ZARDOZ II“ zu drehen. Boorman fühlt sich sichtlich wortwört~ lich „inspiriert“ von Meeses Idee und dessen charmanten Avancen. Beide tauschen ihre Gedanken derart auf aller höchstem Niveau aus, so daß getrost von einem Gipfeltreffen zweier Meister ihres Faches gesprochen werden kann. Für Jonathan Meese ist diese legendäre Begegnung der Beginn seiner neuen Leidenschaft: „ZARDOZ II“

Burt Reynolds talks about lying in "that friggin' canoe" for half the film, why Deliverance is the best film he ever made and his real thoughts on the production of Boogie Nights. Jon Voight describes working with real-life mountain men in the film. Ned Beatty describes the origin of his infamous "Squeal like a pig" sequence and finding a new audience with Toy Story 3. Ronny Cox laments the both of the upcoming Robocop and Total Recall remakes and describes the film's enduring power to affect male audiences.

Oh, but they're shrewd at the South London Gallery. It makes obvious sense to put on Vanished! - subtitled A Video Seance - for Halloween, but it's particularly smart to programme it just after the release of The Blair Witch Project. Now it's trumped by this British ghost tale, which contrives to send shivers down your spine without so much as a single camera movement.
A curious mixture of fireside tale and tabloid curio, Vanished! is the work of poet, sculptor and performance artist Brian Catling and screenwriter Tony Grisoni, who has worked with John Boorman, Terry Gilliam and Jon Amiel. The latest of the increasingly frequent encounters between mainstream movie story-telling and the art avant-garde, Vanished! does tell a riveting story. What makes it all the more gripping is that it's supposedly true.
In 1932, a family living in an isolated house on the Isle of Man - the elderly James and Margaret Irving and their daughter Voirrey - received their first visitation from a mysterious spirit. Its name was Gef, and it took the form of a mongoose-like creature with yellow human hands. The story was briefly celebrated, then forgotten. Now, as they say, it can be told again.
Vanished! really feels like a seance. First the Irvings' house appears on screen. Then the families' necks appear in close-up, their breathing and swallowing amplified until they become an unearthly roar. Then the characters appear in close-up, father and mother summoned from the dead, while the daughter, now aged 78, manifests herself in her youthful form. Dad establishes himself as a no-nonsense chap, proud of his skill with wall insulation, and so the last person we expect to hear muttering portentously about "things not of this world".
Each person has a different relationship with Gef. Father treats it as a surrogate son, calling it "that lad". Mother is charmed by its antics, but comes to recoil at its anarchic presence. The daughter has an odd, mutually protective relationship with the thing. It's at once her pet and her guardian, as well as the traditional "imaginary friend" - telling her about its adventures up the Ganges. But the relationship has sexual overtones, too: "He's tickling me with his muzzle."
Gef proves to be a very sexual beast indeed. The father catches him/it watching the mother as she undresses. In other words, the father is spying on an invisible, possibly imaginary creature spying on his wife - a bizarre case of voyeurism at one remove, as if the adults were using the spirit as a go-between in their own perverse relationship. Gef is a medium for all three's fears and desires, and possibly a screen for something nastier. This is not simply a story of a folie à trois, but apparently a drama of deception and abuse - but, tellingly, nothing is spelled out.
It's here that Vanished! comes into its own as video, making the most of ideas associated with projection: we are literally seeing the family's fantasies and disturbances projected on screen. Another meaning of projection is voice-throwing, and the story is at its strangest when the characters lapse into Gef's eerie, high-pitched keening.
Vanished! is as simple and suggestive as the best ghost stories - as Henry James's The Turn of the Screw, for example, where an apparently sane character gives us a straightforward account of uncanny events, and we're left to sift out veracity from delusion. The three narrators of Vanished! recount events in a way that's at once matter-of-fact and demented, the actors (Julian Curry, Rosemary McHale and Victoria Seifert) striking a balance between domestic matter-of-factness and Old Dark House character playing.
The piece is something of a genre-buster. You can imagine seeing it on TV and finding it a bit static. But watching it on site, sitting in church-like pews, gives the characters a real presence in a real space, and makes the piece more akin to theatre than cinema. And I suppose it has to be regarded as docudrama, because, remember, it's all true.

What makes it all the more gripping is that it's supposedly true.
In 1932, a family living in an isolated house on the Isle of Man - the elderly James and Margaret Irving and their daughter Voirrey - received their first visitation from a mysterious spirit. Its name was Gef, and it took the form of a mongoose-like creature with yellow human hands. The story was briefly celebrated, then forgotten. Now, as they say, it can be told again.
Vanished! really feels like a seance. First the Irvings' house appears on screen. Then the families' necks appear in close-up, their breathing and swallowing amplified until they become an unearthly roar. Then the characters appear in close-up, father and mother summoned from the dead, while the daughter, now aged 78, manifests herself in her youthful form. Dad establishes himself as a no-nonsense chap, proud of his skill with wall insulation, and so the last person we expect to hear muttering portentously about "things not of this world".
Each person has a different relationship with Gef. Father treats it as a surrogate son, calling it "that lad". Mother is charmed by its antics, but comes to recoil at its anarchic presence. The daughter has an odd, mutually protective relationship with the thing. It's at once her pet and her guardian, as well as the traditional "imaginary friend" - telling her about its adventures up the Ganges. But the relationship has sexual overtones, too: "He's tickling me with his muzzle."
Gef proves to be a very sexual beast indeed. The father catches him/it watching the mother as she undresses. In other words, the father is spying on an invisible, possibly imaginary creature spying on his wife - a bizarre case of voyeurism at one remove, as if the adults were using the spirit as a go-between in their own perverse relationship. Gef is a medium for all three's fears and desires, and possibly a screen for something nastier. This is not simply a story of a folie à trois, but apparently a drama of deception and abuse - but, tellingly, nothing is spelled out.
It's here that Vanished! comes into its own as video, making the most of ideas associated with projection: we are literally seeing the family's fantasies and disturbances projected on screen. Another meaning of projection is voice-throwing, and the story is at its strangest when the characters lapse into Gef's eerie, high-pitched keening.
Vanished! is as simple and suggestive as the best ghost stories - as Henry James's The Turn of the Screw, for example, where an apparently sane character gives us a straightforward account of uncanny events, and we're left to sift out veracity from delusion. The three narrators of Vanished! recount events in a way that's at once matter-of-fact and demented, the actors (Julian Curry, Rosemary McHale and Victoria Seifert) striking a balance between domestic matter-of-factness and Old Dark House character playing.
The piece is something of a genre-buster. You can imagine seeing it on TV and finding it a bit static. But watching it on site, sitting in church-like pews, gives the characters a real presence in a real space, and makes the piece more akin to theatre than cinema. And I suppose it has to be regarded as docudrama, because, remember, it's all true.
