Uganda (/juːˈɡændə/ yew-GAN-də or /juːˈɡɑːndə/ yew-GAHN-də), officially the Republic of Uganda, is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is bordered to the east by Kenya, to the north by South Sudan, to the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to the southwest by Rwanda, and to the south by Tanzania. Uganda is the world's second most populous landlocked country after Ethiopia. The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria, shared with Kenya and Tanzania, situating the country in the African Great Lakes region. Uganda also lies within the Nile basin, and has a varied but generally a modified equatorial climate.
Uganda takes its name from the Buganda kingdom, which encompasses a large portion of the south of the country, including the capital Kampala. The people of Uganda were hunter-gatherers until 1,700 to 2,300 years ago, when Bantu-speaking populations migrated to the southern parts of the country.

In the last 20 years Uganda's economy has grown by an estimated seven percent year on year. Al Jazeera's Malcom Webb reports from Kampala.
Uganda is looking forward to 2017 as a year of strong economic growth. The country says negative sentiments and uncertainty dominated 2016. The election cycle also saw many investors develop cold feet but the Bank of Uganda says the economy is beginning to gain momentum. CGTN's Michael Baleke has that report.
The panel discusses a report on the current economic outlook, which lays out the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities present for economic growth in the country. Ugandan policy reforms and improved economic conditions look to be paying dividends with the nation recording a 20% growth in tax revenues, the highest increase among East African states. However as Hillary Ayesiga reports, despite the gains many Ugandans are still finding loopholes to avoid paying their share of taxes.
Uganda is currently running a liberal economy where anyone can walk in with their money, do business and exit when they decide to do so. Although there are a number of investment policies, the government has been faulted for failing to implement such policies, giving room to foreign investors to exploit the laxity and walk away with billions of profits without necessarily investing anything in Uganda. Gideon Badagawa, the Executive Director of Private Sector Foundation Uganda appreciates the idea of running a liberalized economy but says current investment policies should be revisited so that foreign direct investment can support sustainable development and improve on people's living standards. He says that the law should provide for a particular percentage that should be invested within ...
Uganda's government says the country's economy is stressed but not in a recession. This follows a new report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that shows that Uganda's economy is performing relatively well, but in a complex environment. CCTV's Michael Baleke has that report.
Uganda's economy contracted by 1.3 percent in the third quarter of the financial year ending in June, down from growth of 1.7 percent in the previous quarter. Statistics show that processed output from the farm sector declined, as well as forestry activities.

Living in a poor country with one of the worst doctor-patient ratios in the world - about one for every 24,000 people - it's perhaps no surprise that many Ugandans are tempted by alternative remedies, even though there's often little evidence to support the claims made about their efficacy in treating or preventing disease. But the phenomenon does beg many questions, not least of which are who is really benefiting from the sale of these products and how exactly are they marketed? We'd heard reports about one particularly controversial business, a complex multi-level marketing scheme run in Uganda under the aegis of a Chinese company called Tiens, which produces food supplements. Its products, we'd been told, were being inappropriately sold as medications - in some cases for very serious ...
In Ugandas state hospitals and clinics, the government provides free treatment and medicine — but supplies of both doctors and drugs are short. Hospitals receive some help from volunteer organizations like Doctors Without Borders that provide medical staff, but low salaries and long hours deter many Ugandan doctors from service. Worldfocus special correspondent Martin Seemungal travels to a small hospital in northern Uganda where patients come by the hundreds and wait for hours to receive treatment from a handful of dedicated caregivers. Bloggers write from Uganda about their experiences on the ground at http://worldfocus.org/blog/2008/12/10/free-healthcare-but-long-lines-in-uganda/3179/ Worldfocus video podcast: http://feeds.feedburner.com/worldfocus
In the second installment of our special focus on the state of health care in Africa, we head to Uganda where health care campaigners warn there could be a breakdown in medical provision, if emigration of doctors and nurses continues. Many Ugandans have lived through fear over the decades - either because of the actions of Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army or from the campaign of an Islamist insurgency known as the ADF. But today Ugandan Muslims face a different anxiety. Over the past two years, unknown assailants have ambushed and killed a dozen of the country's leading Muslim clerics. Others survived and now live in fear. The attacks have occurred across the country, from the capital, Kampala, to border towns like Mbale. The government and police say that ADF insurgents, among others, are responsible for the killings. Other's blame them on an ideological struggle within the Muslim community or a result of a fight over property and money. Many, though, are pointing fingers at Ugandan government security forces th...

Hundreds of Ugandan officers in battle dress, some wielding sniper rifles, are currently patrolling the capital city suburbs, causing panic among city dwellers. This comes after Ugandan police arrested three suspected terrorists following a tip-off from civilians in Kampala. Two of the suspects, who were of Eritrean origin, were arrested at Forest Mall in central Kampala, but later released after some interrogations. The third suspect of Somali origin was detained while attempting to enter Uganda's parliament and remains in police custody. An on-spot check reveals intensified security measures within the city, with tighter screening of nationals including immigrants. This is while al-Shabab militants have always vowed to harm Uganda, Kenya and Burundi for deploying soldiers to Somalia in a...

40 years ago Uganda was home to a large Asian community, Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs called it paradise. But the peace and tranquillity that existed for generations was to be short lived due to the actions of Idi Amin. In 1972 he ordered Asians to leave the country and were given just 90 days to flee. Pukaar News travelled to Uganda with Businessman Khalid Sheikh from Leicester. He was born in Uganda but had to leave with his family when he was just 14, but he regularly returns to visit his mothers grave. Pukaar News spoke to other Ugandan Asians who were forced to leave 40 years ago but have since returned to the county and re-started businesses including Mayur Madhvani and Sudhir Ruparelia.
