ACT budget: How will it affect you?

ACT Chief Minister and Treasurer Andrew Barr has handed down the first territory budget after last year's ACT election, with a predicted return to a balanced budget after the upcoming financial year.

The safe budget has come with few surprises as the Labor Government delivers on many of its election promises.

Gungahlin

  • New Black Rapid bus service between Gungahlin and Belconnen, with free travel for the first two months
  • $26m to expand the capacity of schools by 844 students between Harrison, Gold Creek, Neville Bonner and Palmerston
  • Planning for a new school in East Gungahlin
  • Completion of the first stage of light rail from Gungahlin to Civic
  • $32.8m to complete the duplication of Gundaroo Drive between Gungahlin Drive and the Barton Highway
  • $1.2m to upgrade the intersection of the Federal Highway and Old Well Station Road
  • New nurse-led Walk-In Centre for Gungahlin, worth $12.5m
  • Undertaking scoping work for a possible future northside general hospital, complete with emergency department and operating theatres

Belconnen

  • New Black Rapid bus service between Belconnen and Gungahlin, with free travel for the first two months
  • School classroom and facility upgrades at Lake Ginninderra College, Aranda Primary and Melba-Copland High
  • $5.9m to upgrade Belconnen High
  • $15m to expand the Belconnen Arts Centre
  • New Belconnen bikeway worth $4.7m
  • New park play space at Giralang worth $100,000
  • Planning for the extension of Bindubi Street and upgrades to William Hovell Drive
  • University of Canberra Hospital, worth $207.4m, on track to be completed next year
  • Undertaking scoping work for a possible future northside general hospital, complete with emergency department and operating theatres

Central Canberra

  • New Green Rapid bus service from Civic to Woden via Manuka and Barton, with free travel for the first two months
  • 10 new customised bike racks, designed by local artists
  • School classroom and facility upgrades at Narrabundah Early Childhood School
  • Completion of the first stage of light rail along Northbourne Avenue from Gungahlin to Civic
  • New boardwalk and public park at Lake Burley Griffin's West Basin
  • Upgrades to Haig Park
  • $8m to upgrade to Dudley Street as part of the Canberra Brickworks project
  • Planning for a new health centre for inner-north Canberra
  • More firefighters to man a second crew at Ainslie Fire Station, to the value of $600,000

Woden

  • New Green Rapid bus service from Woden to Civic via Manuka and Barton, with free travel for the first two months
  • $3.2m for a makeover for the Woden Library
  • School classroom and facility upgrades at Mount Stromlo High, Garran Primary and the Malkara School
  • Planning for a new public school in Molonglo
  • Moving forward with stage two of light rail from Civic to Woden
  • Planning for a Molonglo east-west arterial road to link new suburbs
  • $8m to upgrade to Dudley Street as part of the Canberra Brickworks project
  • New Walk-In Centre for Weston Creek

Tuggeranong

  • Extending the Blue Rapid bus service link from Kippax to Lanyon Market Place
  • $8m for landscaping and outside furniture for Tuggeranong Town Centre and Kambah Village
  • $2m towards planning for upgrades to the Monaro Highway between Johnson Drive and Canberra Avenue
  • Upgrading facilities at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre
  • Tuggeranong is expected to be the highest beneficiary of the ACT Government's plan to increase bulk-billing rates
  • Improving Tharwa Village firefighting water supply, worth $3.2m
