10 steps to creating life balance

Stress experts Dr Mary Casey and Kyla Tustin explain how to weigh up priorities to find peace and harmony

1. Become Aware

Draw a pie chart and section off the areas of your life: work, home, play, family, relaxation, meditation/exercise. Create a chart of how much time you’d like to give these areas. How unbalanced are the two?

2. Gain Insight

Learn why you don’t have the right balance. List the reasons and make it a rule not to blame external circumstances.

3. Commit to Change

Choose the area of your life that’s most out of balance and write down one action you’ll take to improve this area, then commit to this action by telling friends and family.

4. Gratitude

Spend a few minutes a day in gratitude. This brings balance to your life by letting you focus on what you have, instead of what you don’t have or haven’t achieved.

5. Plan

Book relaxation and play into every day. Make it a “must do” and don’t let anything get in the way.

6. Slow Down

Choose one daily activity that you’ll do with total presence. Exercise is great for this.

7. Laugh

Don’t take life too seriously. Loosen up, laugh at yourself and have fun.

8. Look After Your Body

Meditate, exercise, eat well and get enough sleep. If the body is in balance, the mind is, too.

9. Find the positivity

Increase the “juicers” – the people, places and activities that bring you energy and make you feel good. Decrease any “zappers” that leave you feeling low, tired and stressed.

10. Focus on you

Learn to say “no”!

Find balance in five minutes

Try this exercise to work out what “feeds” your life and what you may want to alter.

+ Imagine your world as a blank canvas.

+ Slowly return to it only those things that are vital to your existence.

+ Gradually return other things in order of importance; leave out any people and activities that drain or stress you.
