Amy Schumer buys back family farm as a Christmas surprise for her father

Show comments

In a Christmas surprise for her father, Amy Schumer has bought back her family's old farm.

The US comedian shared the news on Instagram, with a screenshot of herself telling her dad about her purchase on FaceTime.

Schumer's dad, Gordon, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when she was 12 years old.

In a subsequent post, Schumer uploaded a video of her younger self wandering through the cornfield on the farm, revealing her family had lost the farm when they went bankrupt, following her father's diagnosis.

"We lost the farm when we lost everything else," Schumer captioned the video. "But today I got to buy it back for him."

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system that can affect the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. There is no cure, and, in progressive forms of the disease, sufferers become increasingly physically incapacitated.

Schumer was raised in New York City, but when her father received his diagnosis, the family moved to Long Island. Her parents subsequently divorced.

Her family's story in part inspired her 2015 movie, Trainwreck, in which her character, Amy, also has a father who is living in an assisted care facility due to his Multiple Sclerosis.

In July last year, Schumer said her outlook on life shifted when her father received his diagnosis.

"I love to laugh. I seek laughter all the time. I think that's something that also comes with having a sick parent is you don't know what's going to happen and so I'll be like, 'I'm psyched my legs still work,'" Schumer said on Sunday Morning With Charles Osgood. "And I want to, like, experience all I can and make as many memories as I can."

Schumer's visits with her dad are a frequent feature of her Instagram account.
