The NITV Charter requires locally produced content from the grass roots, across the full range of programming genres.
If you are a program maker, or media organisation interested in putting forward program proposals and/or submissions we are open to receiving submissions and ideas. NITV has three Commissioning Editors who will work with a diverse range of program makers and will ensure that commissioned or acquired content reflects the diverse, multicultural and multilingual nature of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We aspire to reflect a variety of sectors from the urban, to the remote, contemporary to traditional, across all age groups, languages groups and interests.

NITV will build strategic partnerships with a range of other agencies, both State and Federal, as well as private investors to leverage funding and production, and will grow the skills and capabilities of the Indigenous production sector.
NITV will have full editorial control over content and programming, and eventually, commission content that is marketable to providers and broadcasters locally and internationally.
Commissions
NITV commissions content that creates and shares unique stories to inspire, instill pride and encourage a greater understanding of Indigenous people and culture.
All projects are carefully considered by the Commissioning Team.
Application Deadlines
You can make an application for funding at any time but the commissioning team will batch proposals so that projects can be considered in commissioning rounds.
Next closing date is 9 September 2016 with decisions by 28 October 2016.
Who Can Apply?
NITV commissions Australian stories.
Indigenous filmmakers and Indigenous production companies are strongly encouraged to apply.
At least two key creative roles (writer, director, producer) must be an Indigenous Australian.
Please note: Applicants should be aware of any outstanding commitments to NITV. Your application will not be considered until they are cleared. If you are unsure of any outstanding commitments get in touch with the Commissioning team before applying.

What Are We Looking For?
We are looking for bold, brave storytelling from Indigenous filmmakers and Indigenous production companies, with creatively ambitious ideas based on subjects that will:
- Engage, inform and entertain a broad audience
- Open audiences to Indigenous voices from across the nation
- Challenge stereotypes
- Reflect a wide range of stories from Indigenous Australia
NITV encourages producers to present proposals which take a '360 degree' approach to broadcast. That is, projects should include a multi-platform presence including online and social media.
NITV commissioning decisions will be subject to the requirements of the SBS Charter, SBS Act and SBS Codes of Practice and Editorial Guidelines.
How Do NITV Commissions Work?
NITV does not fully fund externally commissioned work. Proposals will need to identify additional funding resources, the source of third party funding should be disclosed/identified at time of submission to ensure that any proposed third party financial contributions are consistent with the SBS Charter, SBS Act and SBS Codes of Practice and Editorial Guidelines. NITV reserves the right of approval over third party funding.
If a project is commissioned, the NITV contribution may be in the form of:
- a licence fee and/or equity investment which will be negotiated with the producer
- the allocation of resources and facilities which will be counted as part of the total NITV contribution towards the production budget.
NITV does not fund retrospective filming.
As a general principle NITV does not provide development funding. If the proposal is of interest to NITV we may issue a letter of support to assist producers to apply to screen funding agencies under their development funding programs.
Register your interest in becoming an external assessor on NITV special initiatives
If you are an Australian Indigenous film and television content producer and you are interested in contributing to our assessment on special initiatives, then we would like to hear from you. NITV invites interested independent industry practitioners to register your interest in becoming an external assessor.
We are looking for industry practitioners who have television production budget assessment skills, report writing skills and a willingness to contribute to the work of the NITV team.
External assessors will be engaged on short term contracts and need to be available to attend assessment meetings as required.
