Bad news, you are your drunk personality

Drunk crier? Science says you’re actually a sober crier, too..

Getting jolly can sometimes feel like you’ve undergone a Beyoncé-esque transformation into Sasha Fierce. One second you’re all smiles and compliments, then the next you’re pumping out the banter, offending everyone and ordering double G&Ts.

We’ve been told for years that you can magically transform into ‘the touchy-feely drunk’ or ‘the sloppy one’ but according to a new study out of Clinical Psychological Science your drunk self isn’t that far removed from your ‘real’ personality.

We know right, scary.

In the study, 156 participants were asked to do a self-assessment of their typical sober and drunk personalities. Then, half of these participants were asked to drink a bunch of mixed drinks within 15 minutes and do some social activities including puzzles and games. The other half didn’t drink any alcohol to see if their personalities changed under the same social conditions.

Once the alcohol-group was intoxicated they were questioned about their personalities and on average thought they had changed a lot. They said they had become less agreeable, less conscientious, less open to new experiences, less neurotic and more extraverted.

But trained observers in the experiment noted almost no personality changes except a slight tendency towards extroversion.

In other words, your personality becomes louder but it doesn’t really change. Yes, your drunken weekend antics are just an amplified version of the real you. Gulp.

Looks like you’re all out of excuses for crying over your broken nail, picking fights with the security guard over lockout or randomly hugging every living thing in sight. Thanks science.
