Canberra's startup innovation culture on display in Singapore

Canberra's technological innovation will be on display at an investment showcase in Singapore on Wednesday.

Fifteen ACT start-ups will be pitching their ideas and plans to more than 100 international investors.

The initiative is being supported by the CBR Innovation Network and ANU Connect Ventures.

ANU Connect Ventures manages a $27 million fund and invests in early-stage commercial opportunities in the Canberra region up to $500,000.

Chief executive Nick McNaughton said it was the first time such a large group had been given the opportunity to pitch at an event of this scale.

Each start-up attending in Singapore will present five-minute pitches. Sectors represented include education, health, agriculture, science and film.

"This is a great opportunity for our startups to really demonstrate that they have globally competitive products and technology that has enormous potential and value in front of serious investors," Mr McNaughton said.

CBR Innovation Network delivers a range of support programs and events for startups, entrepreneurs, creative designers, young people and small business.

Startups presenting include Skoolbo, a learning media company which has developed software to help with reading and maths.

The program is used by more than 50,000 primary schools in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

"Recently we have expanded to the preschool market, with the creation of more than 50 hours of singing and dancing video content for 3-6 year olds," chief executive and founder Shane Hill says in the event prospectus.

"In mid 2017 we are launching into the China market with our Mandarin content."

Biotechnology company Beta Therapeutics is developing disease-modifying therapeutics that modulate progression of diabetes and inflammatory diseases.

It's actively seeking investment for the first phase of its development.

The Healthy Grain, backed by CSIRO and Canberra-based Australian Capital Ventures Limited, is planning a wider Asian and North American launch this year.

It commercialises 100 per cent natural barley varieties that are starch resistant and with ultra-low gluten content.

Solcast is seeking to enable a smooth transition of the electricity sector to high penetrations of solar energy generation through modelling and forecasting technology.

"It delivers operational services based on a fusion of unique and disparate data sources," the event prospectus says.

"Solcast works directly with the energy industry to remove the uncertainty associated with behind the meter PV generation, energy storage and large-scale solar generation."

Chief Minister Andrew Barr is scheduled to speak at the event at Suntec Convention Centre this morning.

Mr Barr said the showcase was part of the ACT government's push to attract more international investment.

While in Singapore he will also meet the chief executive of Singapore Airlines, Goh Choon Phong, government and business officials.
