Qantas lists 'Vegemite' among top 20 names in running for new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner planes

When we first heard that Qantas was holding a competition to name its eight new Dreamliner aircrafts, we didn't actually think that a sparkling new jet could be called Vegemite.

The name was put forward along with thousands of other entries including Dreamtime, Great Southern Land and Boomerang.

There's also a big campaign running for the plane to be called Uluru.

But the new Boeing 787 being called after a thick brown food spread has become a distinct possibility after "Vegemite" was shortlisted among the top 20.

The food company, which has more than 500,000 followers on Facebook, appealed to their fans to get behind the name and even came up with a mock Vegemite livery.

Although the name is a little strange, it definitely wasn't the most bizarre suggestion, with ideas like sausage sizzle, chiko roll and Alf Stewart being put forward. Others that were dismissed included Kingswood, iced vo-vo and yeah-nah.

Voters have until June 7 to go online and pick their favourite.
